For medieval weapon geeking, look on the Weapon Rants page. I'm also on Ao3. The Owl House is my coping mechanism right now. Buy me a ko-fi?

I saw your rant about bows in LOTR and I’m in love with ancient weaponry and thus with you now??? Please tell us all about swords!

Hi, I noticed interest had picked back up again!  I guess somebody popular reblogged it.  For the convenience of all parties (and preservation against tumblr shenanigans), all my mini-essays about medieval weaponry, including the swords one, can now be found on my Ao3 account at https://archiveofourown.org/series/1207902. Reblogs of useful weaponry info can be found under the tag “medieval weaponry” on my tumblr.

We have lost the meaning of queerbait

Just because what you wanted didn't happen, doesn't mean it's queerbaiting. It is now being used an excuse when the ship you want didn't get together. Queerbaiting has to do with marketing.

Queerbait: A cookbook that you learned about from ads with pictures of people eating tasty looking soups and the author's social media posts about how soup lovers are going to love it, proves to have no soup recipes.

Not queerbait: A cookbook has no soup recipes. You assumed there would be some based on vibes and wishful thinking. No soups were ever advertised or promised.

Also not queerbait: A cookbook that was advertised as containing soup recipes has soup recipes but not for the types of soups you like.

Queerbait: The cookbook repeatedly mentions soups and how this or that sandwich would be great with soup ("wouldn't it be funny if we put a soup recipe here," it says, though it never does), and perhaps even having recipes for gravy, hot chocolate, and pasta sauce with photos of each thing in big bowls with a spoon in them so they appear to be soups at first glance (but of course anyone who says that they expected a soup recipe is a moron, and the cookbook spends a whole chapter making fun of people who like soup).

Not queerbait: The cookbook is published in a country where soup is illegal or highly stigmatized. For some reason the recipe for "mashed potatoes" calls for leeks and comes out way thinner than you'd expect mashed potatoes to be, and the "tomato pasta sauce" recipe makes way more than you'd need to top a couple of servings of spaghetti, but there's definitely no soup in here, nope nope nope.

A recent post breached containment so I think it's time for some rent lowering:

Trans children should have the right to undergo the correct puberty at the same time as their peers.

Puberty blockers were only ever a compromise and should not be seen as the end goal of trans advocacy.

untamed au where everything is the same except wwx plays an otamatone

Ok hear me out… I think an otomatone is a suitable – superior, even – instrument for demonic cultivation. I hear one for more than ten seconds and it’s headaches ahoy. You can see the evil in their haunted little eyes. I fully believe a properly mastered otomatone can rally the forces of the damned

He would.

For the WIP game - Threads Binding a Wide Universe? Sounds very interesting!

That one is actually partially posted on Ao3! I tried an experiment to see if I'd be able to finish a long fic promptly if I started posting it when I have never before sustained any kind of long-term plot. The answer was no!

It's an Old Guard fic, set in space, featuring the introduction of three new immortals. I was stuck on it and ended up reading all I had done to my partner, who pointed out that it was - overall - about healthcare access/justice, so I have some thinking to do about that. Here's a snippet, warning for character death from illness.

If you're in the US, now is a great time to talk to the young people in your life about the US military:

  • The recruiter is not your friend. The military employs child psychologists to learn how to make you think the recruiter is your friend.
  • The recruiter is allowed to lie to you and makes more money if they do.
  • The recruiter is paid a commission to groom children into cannon fodder.
  • The recruiter will tell you you're special and will go into special smart soldier programs instead of combat. They're lying.
  • The recruiter may tell you they can tell if someone can get PTSD or not and only recruit people like you, who won't. They're lying.
  • The recruiter may tell you you'll be too busy attending free college (!!) to go overseas. They're lying.
  • The recruiter may ask what countries you want to travel to and promise you bougie placements on military bases in those countries. They're lying.
  • Even "It's just four years!" is a lie - the government is allowed to hold you past your enlistment period with a stop-loss order.
  • The recruiter actually has zero power to decide anything that happens to you after you enlist and they more importantly don't care what happens to you.
  • If you enlist, you will be brainwashed to make you willing to do things to other humans that you would never be willing to do today.
  • You will be ordered to do things that will kill children. And you'll do them.
  • The military is not the only way or even the best way for you to go to college or start a career.
  • Military brainwashing will actually make you into a terrible university student because it degrades your ability to think critically and question your sources.
  • Having PTSD and/or a TBI will make it harder to be a student and keep a job.
  • Veterans' benefits suck these days.
  • Being a veteran drastically increases your risk of homelessness, suicide, alcohol and drug dependence, prison time, and becoming an abuser to your loved ones.
  • The military will expose you to chemicals that will drastically increase your chances of developing cancer.
  • The military will withhold information about your rights to conscientiously object after enlisting.
  • A lot can change in four years.

All of this!

If you want an organization who WILL tell you the truth about your rights to conscientiously object, how to legally get out of the DEP (Delayed Entry Program) or about any of your other rights in the military (whether you’re enlisted, thinking about enlisting, or a family member or friend of someone enlisted (or thinking about enlisting)), who will do it confidentially & for free, you want the

GI Rights Hotline

run by NGOs & non-profits, which has been counseling folks for DECADES now:

Or by phone:

Even if all the person you're speaking to cares about is the money, the money sucks.

Minimum wage in California just went up to $16.90. You need to be rank E4 or be E3 with at least 3 years of service before you're making more than the CA minimum wage in the military.

You will literally get better pay and benefits working at a costco. (And that's not even accounting for the fact that the military isn't a 40 hour work week, your entire life is on the clock)

I cannot emphasize this enough, if you're a desperate young queer person you will make better money, get better healthcare, and have more affordable options for school if you move to California, get a job at costco, live with roommates, and go to community college than you will have if you join the US military.

Rules of the Gusu Lan Clan

Since I wrote my fic about junior Wei Wuxian trying to follow every rule, I’ve been wanting to compile a list of all known rules across multiple sources, and apparently today is the day for that.

General notes:

According to the MDZS novel, there are 3,000 rules at the time of the lectures, and 4,000 rules 13 years later after Wei Wuxian is resurrected. According to CQL, there are 3,500 rules at the time of the lectures.

These rules are presumably numbered, as when Lan Wangji is being beaten, Lan Qiren asks him “what is the 52nd doctrine of the Lan clan?” However, they are given in a different order in different sources so establishing how they are numbered is impossible. Since we can’t know the order they “belong” in, I’ve organized them by grouping them thematically. For the few I know numbers for, those numbers are included in parenthesis.

I don’t know how these rules are referred to in Chinese; in English they are translated as rules, principals, doctrines, or laws. Based on contextual clues, it’s possible that the rules are sorted into different categories (ie, principals vs. doctrines vs. rules)

I did my best to consolidate the rules listed duplicatively over multiple sources, but as I don’t speak Chinese and therefore cannot say which are identical in the original, there is likely some redundancy. This is exacerbated by a lot of rules apparently being given in both “do not” and “be” forms - ie, “do not disrespect elders” and “be filial” and “be respectful to teachers” are all rules. The reason I opted to leave these areas of redundancy is that this compiled list is around 175 rules. There are 3,000 plus of these things. If just ~175 have this much duplication the amount of redundancy in the actual list must be insane, so I think these overlapping rules are intentional and consolidating them would be inappropriate.

Day 12, Balearic shearwater

Critically endangered (19,000 mature individuals, decreasing)

The Balearic shearwater's population declines at a rate of about 14% per year. This bird doesn't begin breeding until 4-6 years of age, with 3 years at earliest. As such, adult mortality is its biggest threat. About 50% of mortality is due to bycatching, and thought to be the main cause of the species' decline

Alongside that, its small breeding range (exclusively the Balearic islands, Spain) makes them vulnerable to introduced predators such as cats, rats, and genets
