Alan Hart was one of the first men to get a hysterectomy in the US, and pioneered the use of X-rays in the diagnosis of tuberculosis, which ended up being crucial to treatment as the disease was asymptomatic early on.
This puts a whole other spin on the constant obsession with denying historical trans men their identity by saying “They just wanted to be doctors!!!!!” “They just wanted to be soldiers!!!!”. While some cis women definitely did cross-dress, there were plenty of trans men who were… trans men. “It was safer!!!!” Absolutely not.
What's funny is there's another reason that argument is bullshit in his case: he got his diploma as a woman. The woman who outed him? She was a fellow doctor who he had gone to medical school with.
Alan Hart quite literally had no reason to transition. Sure, passing as a cis male doctor would have had its benefits, but there's no evidence there was something he really wanted to do that he legally could not have done as a woman. Some people have claimed he was a lesbian subjected to conversion therapy, but he was the one who brought up transitioning to his doctor, and he had to convince him to let him get a hysto by arguing that he, as a invert, should not be allowed to reproduce anyways.
It's similar to some cross-dressing soldiers who continued crossdressing their whole lives. You could argue they only did it to keep their pensions... except that there is a pretty long history of cross-dressing women being given pensions after being outed as women, or outing themselves specifically to get a pension. This happened a few times iirc during the American Civil War. Meanwhile, Albert Cashier literally prevented getting his pensions money because he refused to have a physical- being seen as a male soldier in poverty was more important than being a female soldier with money.
