it makes me feel a certain way that Carol Sturka had to inject herself with a truth serum before she could really cry about her wife’s death
#of course this is a reflection on Carol#but this is also about the breakdown of society#because in normal times there would have been a funeral#there would have been a confrontation with the things meant to make us sit with the reality of death#the eulogies that Carol listens to#and the one she has to write herself#grieving rituals are important because they make it very hard to do what Carol does#Carol spends the days after Helen dies in constant action trying to figure out what is happening and how to stop it#but it’s a distraction#and contrast that to sitting shiva#(which I bring up since the actor who plays Helen is Jewish and I think it’s not unreasonable to treat the character as Jewish as well)#seven days of ritualized mourning#of being forced to sit with the grief#of having people come to you and feed you and mourn with you#such rituals prevent people from running from the grief#so yeah Carol needs truth serum because she’s Carol#but she also needs it because the wisdom of every society on the planet#that understands that grief must be faced and shared#has been lost
