Avoidance is the worst reaction to stress. Oh this thing is giving me anxiety? And it's something I could prepare for by looking at it more or learning things about the topic? No, I will take psychological damage if I look at it directly. I will still be thinking about it and be stressed though.

I’m only two books into T. Kingfisher’s Saint of Steel series and I think the Temple of the White Rat might be my favorite fictional religious order ever.

Context: my family (Mom's German side) has always used butter/margarine on every meat and cheese sandwich. Everyone I've talked to find this very weird. The only people I've met who also do this were of German descent, and it has me curious!
#nuance: i grew up eating butter on bologna & cheese sandwiches but not others#I haven't had balogna in DECADES#lithuanian (and other mostly NE european)#and that side of the family is from PA which has a lot of german influences on culture/food#oh and my mom lived in germany several times as a child (army brat)#(occasionally she'd use ketchup which made it taste like a hotdog sandwich - which was kinda fun for child me)

#Gen X and had them in elementary school#the vaccine hit the US in the late 90s#it was a disease that “everyone" caught and “everyone” was fine#there were commercials on TV for the vaccine when my oldest was an infant#essentially: “get your kid vaccinated so you don't have to MISS WORK when they get sick”#TERRIBLE ad campaign#treating kids and illness as an inconvenience#so yeah. my kids all got chicken pox too.#not sure if i'd have believed a commercial touting the health benefits but i definitely remember being turned off by THAT commercial

some people’s new years resolution needs to be to stop going out in public while horribly sick with infectious diseases
i see this post is going around again.. sort of like a bunch of infectious diseases i could name
#a family member went to the ER Monday. she never got a bed outside of the ER.#finally got her “emergency surgery” on Wednesday#three days in the ER because zero beds free due to influenza hospitalizations#there is also a “bad cold” (no fever but significant other symptoms) going around#and RSV has been low this season and is starting to increase (hopefully influenza has peaked and we won't have a double whammy)
