Oh shit. Sally Field kinda went off here. “The garment you knit for yourself as a child.” Might have to read her memoir now.

ID: Sally Field: The task as a grown up person is to realize what garment you knit for yourself to survive as a child, in the winter of your childhood.

But when you're in the summer, so to speak, of your adulthood, you're boiling hot and you can't figure out, "Why am I so fucking hot all the time?" And it's because you can't take off this garment that you knitted for yourself as a child that you no longer need. You can't realize, you don't realize that this way of behaving, this functional way that your brain taught you to behave, to survive, it gets in your way now.

end ID

It would have been super intriguing for El to fall behind in the final battle because she's trying to save Kali rather than leave her behind. El deviates from the plan and insists she get Kali to a hospital. Recruiting Hopper in this would force him to prioritize El's needs over his own and see Kali as the young girl she is who is deserving of love too. Once they get to the hospital, it would be too late for El to stay in the wormhole. Kali and El's love for each other ends up saving them against their own will. El doesn't end a superhero, she ends as a human who loves her family. Kali doesn't end a victim of the government as she feared. As her wound heals, Kali gives the military a vision of El's death. They can start anew.

This would also open the door for the group to rely on Will instead. He would be the main component in the confrontation of the Mind Flayer and Vecna like it felt like the season was building to. Will and El constantly swap places within the narrative. The group underestimates Will, but they overestimate El. We expect El to be the major factor in the battle and sacrifice herself, so when Will defeats the villain and dies in the process (and is revived, of course), this defies our expectations. It feels more earned.

Since we're making up stories that don't add up and call it "canon" I want to announce that Ross and Matt both had to forever be set apart from their families and friends, as it is necessary for the character development of their family members. They all need to move on.

Ross moves to Poland and is forced to become a Christian for his social life to survive. He never truly commits, since he has a hard time believing in a God that wouldn't accept homosexuality. That's right, he realizes that he is in fact gay and forever regrets the fact that he didn't make Byler canon as it might have inspired people to be more accepting, and maybe it would have made his life easier. He flees to England to live an authentic life. One day while sitting on a bench reminiscing, he is found by Lucian Holland, who sits down beside him. Few words were shared during the encounter, Lucian simply tells him that 3 months ago he had a dream that his grandpa, Oscar Wilde, told him he was disappointed in the Duffer brothers for their insensitivity. Then he walks away.

His brother Matt packs his bag and goes M.I.A as he secretly moves to work at a mango farm in Hawaii. They're really nice people but they tease him for being a bad surfer and it makes Matt really miserable, since he secretly always dreamed of being a surfer. It takes a toll on his ego and he never fully recover his confidence.

willel in season 1 was fucking crazy. the gap will left behind after he vanished rippling out, the addition of el to the group slotting in, will coming home as el disappears once more, lines intended to be parallel which cross just once, both living with only stories about the other in the aftermath, will desperate to be found when everyone's given up on the idea he's alive, el desperate to stay hidden when the hunt for her rounds the corner, tragedy of loss and tragedy of hiding, the past rusting over for better and worse, changing, home existing in periphery, will finding his way back, el finding her way forward, the love was there and it changed everything, two sides of a coin, two mirror images, twins
