Imagine a world where music is music and dance is dance, and the two of them have nothing to do with each other. People go to the club and rhythmically throb in complete silence; they go to dance recitals, and it's all just people moving weirdly around the stage, in silence. If you go to a concert and you start tapping your toes or clapping in time with the music, this is seen as weird and kind of gauche. Everyone notes that, historically, music and dance used to have a lot to do with each other, and some of the historical art created from that past, like The Nutcracker or Singin' in the Rain or the Macarena, was "pretty good", but combining them is just not the Done Thing anymore by serious artists. It's only done by weird and trashy subculture artists who aren't taken seriously by the mainstream artistic establishment. On those rare occasions when a "serious artist" decides to incorporate music into their dance or vice versa, they need to take pains to establish that they're being subversive, rather than playing it straight like those weird, trashy musical dancers.
