Peculiar golden dragon
Just doodled a few new dragons I’ve been collecting. They’re side characters in Ells and Pan’s story (which is why I used those two to fill space).
Eridosthera (Guardian), Narivon (Bogsneak) and Almohrah (Mirror) are deep sea dragons which are more monster than dragon. A common myth among sea-dwelling dragon-folk, it is said that five dragons guard an ancient sea-garden whose plants can cure any ailment. Those they deem worthy may be given leave to take the plants they need, but of those who have gone looking for the garden, they either return empty handed or not at all.
(I’m still looking for appropriate gen1s for the fae and ridgeback dragons if you have any to sell who match the blues/greens with yellows/browns/oranges vibe these guys have going on)
Gouache, 8x10"
Personal work; I’m experimenting a little with dragons having wings more like fish-fins or pterosaurs than bat wings. More to come on that line of thought.

A little dragonlet for this first throwback thursday of Smaugust! This was a breakthrough painting for me at the time and I still love this smug little guy and his fin-wings.

One of my rewards for the Mischief tier in my membership Mysterious Corner! Each month you get a tiny creature, ACEO sized! If you like creatures and tiny paintings, look no further! On top of this of course you get access to all the groovy stuff behind the scenes, 15% off everything (including originals) in my shop, monthly hangouts, monthly desktop backgrounds… it’s pretty awesome. Smaugust day 21 - Designs, 'Creamsicle' Lacewing
ive been looking at nice bugs lately so here is a lacewing design! i think i might make them so theres a ton of species and subspecies so i never have to stop designing them theyre fun
Smaugust day 18 - Biology, Predator-Prey Interaction
a young Speckled Widewing is way over its head when it tried to ambush a grown bull Bush-back Spiral. inspired by the fighting dinosaurs fossil showing a Velociraptor in combat with a Protoceratops, the dragons here won't suffer the same fate, although the Widewing isn't likely to walk away with just the broken arm. although Spirals eat a lot of plantlife, they are omnivorous, and will eat meat or even hunt oppurtunistically.
Both serpents and dragons can be called zmey, but I am writing a story and want slightly different names for serpent-dragon and many-headed winged dragon, could Chev Zmey ('worm dragon') and Zmeya-drakon ('dragon dragon?!') work? Or is this a bad way to name them? I welcome advice! Спасибо!
Hello! Well, zmeya (f) is a normal word for a snake in Russian, so Zmeya-Drakon is a snake-dragon, literally. It has nothing to do with multi-headedness, I’m afraid.
Both cherv-zmey (червь-змей) and zmeya-drakon (змея-дракон) sound more like names for a serpent-dragon. At least for my ear.
There is a zmey who always is multi-headed though (except those situations when it isn’t in a zmey form). It’s name is Chudo-Yudo. Chudo (чудо, neuter gender) means a miracle, wonder, marvel, prodigy. Maybe, you can use it? Something like, chudo-zmeya or something like that.
большое спасибо! I have some English translations of Russian folklore which translate things a little differently so I thought it would be best to ask you! (for example, I've heard 'chudo' means 'monster', and Chudo-Yudo is 'monster yonster' and is a name for 3 specific monsters rather than a broader word for dragon: I get conflicting information from books in English!)
I have some pictures of closely related dragons, but I have not drawn the Russian dragon species yet (this is for a 'field guide to dragons')
cherv-zmey?
chudo-zmeya? (Extra 'heads' are babies carried on the back)
Спасибо за совет!
The term Chudo-Yudo is also a term for a generic “monster”. So according to Yandex Chudo-Yudo can look like either:
But if we are talking about dragons then, yeah, Chudo-Yudo is depicted by illustrators as a zmey with many heads.
Nice pictures by the way! Good luck with your project! :)
большое спасибо!
