I’ve noticed some posts around about how you can’t romanticize your life during a fascist regime and while I deeply sympathize with this sentiment, I want you to try to understand that’s what they want you to believe.
Fascism thrives best in the cesspool of hopelessness. They want us so confused and hopeless that we give in. When you give in, you don’t fight back.
If you wait for life to look good to do the things that bring you joy; life will still be bad - you will just have less joy.
As someone who has struggled with my mental health a lot for the last thirty years, I know this struggle firsthand. And changing this belief system - the one where you spend all of your time expecting bad things so you won’t be surprised when they happen - it’s the hardest work that I have ever done. And I’m not perfect; I still have setbacks. I still experience really real fears about the state of the world and the US, in particular, because that’s where I live.
But I made a vow to myself that I will not let the choices of others ruin my life. When I made that vow, I was thinking of my parents - but it applies to the state of the government right now, too.
There are still flowers in my garden, and ripe tomatoes, and it’s almost pick-your-own apples season, and I have plans with my friends to go to as many cemetery ghost walks as we can find this October.
I still deserve to live. I still deserve to laugh. I still deserve to love. I still deserve to be as happy as I can be.
And you do, too.
Dan Savage.

“Where there's hope, there's life. It fills us with fresh courage and makes us strong again.”
— The Diary of a Young Girl, Anne Frank
“One is responsible to life: It is the small beacon in that terrifying darkness from which we come and to which we shall return. One must negotiate this passage as nobly as possible, for the sake of those who are coming after us.”
— The Fire Next Time, James Baldwin
There is something so beautiful about reaching out to the monstrous with intent to touch it gently. To risk the sharp teeth and the lethal claws, to defy fear and revulsion, and choose to be delicate with something that can be, and often is, incredibly brutal.

Where and when did people come up with the notion that actors are constantly improvising their lines and big reactions? And why is popular opinion so hellbent on it to the point that it makes actors seem less talented for the thing they are hired for: acting! They are not being hired to write! It’s actually bad in most cases if actors are expected and encouraged to improvise lines—especially in dramas! Certain comedies, sure, but those actors are being hired for the skill of improvisation, because it’s a different skill set. A good actor can take a script and deliver the lines as written in a way that feels organic and true!!! Why do some people not get that?! The same is true for blocking and certain actions! Like, are people not considering how shitty it would be to work on a collaborative creative project where there’s no agreement ahead of time?? Sex scenes and arguments especially!! Where’s that interview with Billy Zane where he thought the people who assumed he improvised the table/tea setting throwing were ludicrous? Could you imagine how scary that would be for everyone?!! And moreover, they have to know where to film if the camera is kept steady nevermind the lighting and boom mics jfc. Do people really think actors are the ones calling the shots from writing to cinematography to music to ADs to choreography. That is the director’s job!!! If they are not doing that then they are a bad director!!!
THIS. An actor MIGHT make a suggestion on a very small scale if they think it will make the performance more believable, say "I think instead of slowly sliding to the floor in shock it should be a quick drop to my knees, I think can sell that better" but not something huge like "I'm going to hurl a prop full force into a wall without telling anyone beforehand."
Pretty much all "we didn't tell them" stuff is from DIRECTORS trying for a more genuine reaction. And that CAN FAIL if they're, say, going for genuine shock and someone yelps in surprise or otherwise acts out of character due to being genuinely startled. There's tons of directors who ave gotten bad reps for putting their actors into shitty situations to try and make the acting "more real" when if they're good actors, it will be real whether or not you, say, drop them in a dunk tank full of ice because you don't trust them to pretend water is cold without potential hypothermia.
VOICE ACTORS can have more room to improv, but that's partly because a lot of them just say random shit in their character's voice as a way of warming up or getting in the zone before recording officially and it might give the writer/director an idea. Also since they're not on camera it's cheaper to do more takes and judge what tone works best.
