I realize we've all said this many, many times before, but the crab rave cannot come soon enough.

Everything is still very comprehensively shit, but a) scrolling through pictures/videos of all the protests ongoing across the country (can be found on Bluesky) that were arranged on often less than 48 hours' notice, and b) recalling that the Turd Reich is doing this precisely BECAUSE they're running scared and sense that time is running out for their fascist clownshow loathed by the great majority of Americans, is at least mildly cathartic.

Chapters: 2/2 Fandom: Heated Rivalry (TV), Shadow and Bone (TV) Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings Characters: Shane Hollander, Yuna Hollander, David Hollander, Wylan Van Eck, Jan Van Eck Additional Tags: preteen yearning, Young Love, baby gays not knowing what their feelings are about, it goes about as well as you can expect, the heated rivalry x shadow and bone crossover verse 3 people asked for, no Six of Crows knowledge required

Summary:

Well, okay, he was an awkward twelve-year old, but Shane’s better at navigating friendship as an adult, right?

…right?

i had a dream that time travel was invented and too many people choose to travel back in time to save the titanic from sinking (the question of whether unsinking of the titanic deserved so much attention in the face of human history was the subject of both heavy academic and online discourse), which caused a rift in the space-time-continuum that led to the titanic showing up indiscriminately all over the world’s oceans and sea in various states of sinking.

this caused a lot of issues both in terms of fixing said space-time-continuum and in terms of nautical navigation, and after a long and heavy battle in the international maritime organization it was decided that the bureaucratic burden of dealing with this was to be upon Ireland, much to their dismay. the Irish Government then released an app for all sailors and seafarers so they could report titanic sightings during their journeys, even though they heavily dissuaded you from reporting them given the paperwork it caused.

anyway i woke up with a clear image of the app in my head and needed to recreate it for all of you:

no you don't understand. i do international regulation of emerging technologies for a living. this WAS me stress dreaming about work

LEGO builder Brad Barber has made it his mission to transform every LEGO set, from The Lion King to Fast & Furious and even Disney Princesses, into versions of the Star Wars Millennium Falcon, using only the original pieces from each kit.

Because, apparently, the Falcon belongs in every universe. Would you be able to do the same? 😄

To update this, the astronaut didn’t actually do it, she and her wife were getting a divorce and the wife plead guilty to lying to the feds about it

And framing your ex for a crime mid-divorce while they are actively in space is some Agatha Christie level shit

Toy from Ancient Greece, c.450 BCE: this doll was crafted in the form of a woman with a rolling pin, and it has articulated joints that allow the rolling pin to be moved back and forth

This terracotta figurine was created nearly 2,500 years ago, and it was likely designed as a toy. The doll is positioned above a small tray, and its torso is equipped with a set of pins (located in the waist and shoulders) that allow the figure to lean up and down, gently pushing the rolling pin back and forth across the tray as if preparing food.

Above: another view of the same doll

This is not the only known example of an articulated doll from ancient Greece. Many so-called "dancing dolls" (also known as plangones) were created throughout the Greco-Roman world.

As this book explains:

Female dolls with attached limbs known as plangones, korai, or nymphai were made in numerous areas in Greece over a considerable span of time from the Geometric to the Hellenistic periods. Male dolls also exist but were far less popular. Although made out of a wide range of materials, including wood, bone, ivory, marble, wax, cloth, and alabaster, dolls of terracotta are by far the most common.

The same book goes on to describe some of the other toys that were created and used by the ancient Greeks:

In antiquity, play was as much an integral part of growing up as it is today, and the ancient Greeks possessed a wide variety of toys and games. Both the archaeological record and ancient literature provide information about these, only some of which overlaps. The most common toys preserved include rattles, dolls, knucklebones, figurines, miniature vessels, miniature furniture, and miniature animals, some of which are wheeled and some of which have riders. Less common are balls and wheeled carts.

Ancient toys have been unearthed in many other parts of the world, too.

Some of the rattles, pull-toys, articulated dolls, and mechanical figurines from Mesopotamia and Egypt even date back to nearly 4,000 years ago.

In one of my previous posts, I also mentioned a 3,500-year-old wheeled hedgehog figurine from Iran that may have been created and used as a toy.
