Scott and Louis were romantically engaged before Scott was cursed. Louis was under the assumption that Scott was dead, his corpse in suspended animation. But a small part of his brain told him he was still alive, and he chose to believe it in an attempt to keep himself sane.
He decided that he would protect the town so that there would be something for Scott if(when) he wakes up.
Four hundred years later, he met Owen and they started courting for about half a decade, then he turned him and a few days later he's burnt at the stake and the events from canon take place.
Two hundred years later, Scott wakes up in his cold tomb, Louis isn't there to greet him. He finds his castle lost to time, and the town obliterated.
But after Scott gets stronger from turning Pyro, he sees Louis' final moments on the pyre and completely crumbles. Murmuring Louis' name over and over. "Oh, my sweet darling Louis." "Oh please, please, let it not be true, let him still be alive, please." "Please, let my heart be returned to me once more. Oh heavens above, if you truly are so gracious, let if not be true." "Oh Louis, if only I had held you closer, maybe this wouldn't have happened, maybe we would still be together."
Now Pyro is obviously confused, having just been jumped by Scott hours prior and seeing how vicious he was, seeing him now crying on his knees, clutching his chest and mouth, begging.
This is not the Scott they know.
But Owen is a different story completely.
At first, he doesn't know if Scott's talking about his Louis, but the second Scott mentions a fire he's convinced.
Knoeing the pain of his death, Owen decides to ask Scott about his Louis when he's not begging the heavens and hopefully somewhere quite and secluded.
