it's very interesting to me how much Tumblr users seem to love cowboys while generally having less-than-zero familiarity with westerns as a genre or the history of "cowboys" themselves. Like most of the read seems to come from rdr2 and overwatch and brokeback mountain gifsets. Which is essentially how American culture at large handles the open-ended and vague symbol of the Cowboy. And that vague, baseless, open-ended pretend-playing is gaining in broad cultural popularity at the same time as the sprint into abject fascism and country music taking its revenge on rap for being American Music for two decades. Also think it's interesting that people are doing that with "knights" while our "secretary of war" has a giant Jerusalem cross in his chest. That's a separate conversation but covers most of the same points.

There's this thing I keep seeing people do on here where they talk about European revisionist westerns (spaghetti westerns) as being these brutally racist genocidal fairy tales and it drives me crazy. Because they don't know the difference between westerns and revisionist westerns. Like yeah they're largely cheap italian-produced movies from the 60s. They can be crass and tasteless and problematique. But they're also movies where the "Indian" is the protagonist, and getting revenge for his people being brutalized. These are movies where the villains are industry-barons, plotting to steal land. Army officers up to no good. Post-confederate pseudo-klansmen. They deliberately create a complicated world to contrast classic westerns, and do so as external commentary on American culture. Americans didn't get it, but the so-marketed man with no name trilogy is a satire making fun of how brutal Americans are. These are super interesting movies. Sergio Corbucci was a fucking communist. He did Django. He did Navajo Joe. He wrote The Great Silence after he heard the news of Malcolm X's murder.

And I keep seeing people lumping them in with the fucking Searchers and Rio Bravo cuz they can't bother to learn the fucking difference, let alone ever watch any of the fucking things.

I haven’t been on this app in a while, but I know a Black man, Keith Porter, was murdered by ICE on New Year’s Eve (Rest in Power) in Cali. Just one of the countless Black people who’ve been murdered by ICE and other agents of the state.

I log back into this app and see the conversations around the white woman, Renee Good, who was just recently killed. And I can’t help but notice the stark difference in circulation of news and boosting of stories between both of them across this app…

Shit has BEEN happening to Black people across administrations and is currently happening to Black people under this administration, and is met by crickets. Yet when it starts touching white people, I see real anger start being felt from the gen pop followed by amplification and co-opting of Black terms and memorialization… I stg it takes everything in me to give af about yall.
