I haven’t been on this app in a while, but I know a Black man, Keith Porter, was murdered by ICE on New Year’s Eve (Rest in Power) in Cali. Just one of the countless Black people who’ve been murdered by ICE and other agents of the state.

I log back into this app and see the conversations around the white woman, Renee Good, who was just recently killed. And I can’t help but notice the stark difference in circulation of news and boosting of stories between both of them across this app…

Shit has BEEN happening to Black people across administrations and is currently happening to Black people under this administration, and is met by crickets. Yet when it starts touching white people, I see real anger start being felt from the gen pop followed by amplification and co-opting of Black terms and memorialization… I stg it takes everything in me to give af about yall.

I haven’t slept since that incident.

I kept thinking: what if it comes into our tent? What if it bites my son while he sleeps? Amir is just a baby. I checked him all night. Every movement of air made my heart race. This is the kind of fear we live with in tents. Not once. Every night.

After this happened, my wife and I made a decision. We take turns staying awake at night. She sleeps for two hours, then wakes me up. I sleep for two hours, then wake her. We repeat this until morning, so one of us is always watching the children. Before this incident, rats and rodents would sneak into our tent at night. We would find their traces everywhere .. torn food boxes, bitten bags, droppings on our supplies. Sometimes I would wake up to the sound of them eating and scare them away. I never imagined that one day they might leave the food and attack children.

This is why I am asking for help.

We are trying to move our children out of a tent and into a simple unfinished apartment — just enough to seal it and keep them safe. We are close, but we cannot finish without support. Please help us leave this tent.

To be honest, these days are mentally overwhelming for us. Leaving the tent has become urgent, while news about a possible opening of the crossing adds even more pressure. Even if it opens, the process is slow and complicated.

We're not living... we're barely surviving. In a tattered tent amidst the bitter cold, we're struggling to stay alive. The rain has shown us no mercy, seeping into our tent from every side, flooding the ground, soaking our bedding, and drenching everything we own. I thought I'd make a new and shorter post especially since I've got updates. Chris has come around to the reality that he won't be able to fundraise and hustle to get the money to fix the house and I don't have enough to cover it even if I gave him everything I have, so he's going to find an alternative (eg get a loan against the house to pay for repairs).

Meanwhile, thanks to the incredibly kind and generous help I've received on here I have enough savings to do all the things I need to do for my health and career this coming year - a pre apprenticeship course and related fees, driving lessons, moving (because I'll need to be in the city for this full time). A labour hire company has promised me work next month too!

So the issue then is surviving in the meantime. I'm terrified of spending the money I have set aside and then not being able to replace it and then not being able to work. So I'm asking for your generosity, help and kindness one final time to get through the next few weeks

This should be the last time we have to do this if we're able to pull it off! I've got a social worker, I've got worked lined up, things are finally falling into place. We are so close!! As well as Chris my daughter needs me, she doesn't have anyone else supporting her
