The Magpie's Nest

@shy-magpie / shy-magpie.tumblr.com

Magpie; they/them; Queer. Born in the late eighties. I tend to get obsessed with a show or book only to lose interest and get just as obsessed with something else then fall back in love with the first fandom. Crossing my fingers on staying with Marvel and Rusty Quill Gaming. I tag for swearing bc I have a hard time seeing it before I share elsewhere, and "I'm not sure what to tag this" is my self amnesty tag for when I can't brain to tag properly

You guys are all aware that they trained people for those civil rights protests, right? That the people doing sit ins had to be trained to keep their cool as white people screamed invectives and pouring drinks on them? It was a very organized operation.

One of the greatest lies that recent American history has perpetuated is the idea that Rosa Parks was "just a tired Black woman who wanted to sit down on the bus" and not a motivated activist who trained with other civil rights luminaries and very intentionally got on that bus specifically to get arrested about it.

Can you think of a reason why they might not want you to know that the people staging sit-ins and getting arrested for sitting on the bus were trained and organized?

Fossil Fibers' discord has started using banana for scale when showing off fiber projects, but I know some of the members are anti-banana, so I'm making them a Banana for Scale amigurumi pattern lol

This is attempt 5 and 6 to get the shape right

5 was too tube, attempt 6 is doing some good things. Switching between a 2 st increase and short rows every 5 rows for a very gradual widening and the slightest curve

Could have been finishing this but capitalism calls *eye roll*

Nanner COMPLETE

I don't have any fresh bananas but have freezer nanners for scale

✨ Glamour shots✨

@fossilfibers is an absolute treasure and editing a pattern for us, truly the sweetest

I’ve mentioned it before, but I love the specific dysfunction of Valjean and Cosette’s relationship in the novel— the way they lie and conceal things from each other in an effort to keep each other happy; the way they’re so concerned with not hurting the other that it breaks their ability to honestly communicate. They’re a gentle loving family but also severely unable to talk about things that are upsetting. When Cosette is devastated over not seeing Marius return to the gardens, and Jean Valjean is heartbroken over Cosette growing up, they can only communicate like this:

However, she did not allow Jean Valjean to perceive anything of this, except her pallor.
She still wore her sweet face for him.
This pallor sufficed but too thoroughly to trouble Jean Valjean. Sometimes he asked her:—
“What is the matter with you?”
She replied: “There is nothing the matter with me.”
And after a silence, when she divined that he was sad also, she would add:—
“And you, father—is there anything wrong with you?”
“With me? Nothing,” said he.
These two beings who had loved each other so exclusively, and with so touching an affection, and who had lived so long for each other now suffered side by side, each on the other’s account; without acknowledging it to each other, without anger towards each other, and with a smile.

Saw a post pointing out that the idea of a Saturday-Sunday weekend is in itself cultural Christianity being applied to the whole “secular” world, that in Israel the weekend is Friday-Saturday and in some Muslim-majority countries the weekend is Thursday-Friday or only Friday (in others it’s Friday-Saturday as well.)

Anyway to make a truly secular and inclusive world I propose a Monday-Wednesday work-week and a Thursday-Sunday weekend. I think anyone of any or no religion could all get behind this.

Actually let's talk about ChatGPT and other associated LLM's and how if you're in college or university right now and you know the field that you are going into is focused largely on people, trust, and the ability to regulate your emotions and think critically about things you should not be using ChatGPT to help you.

A LLM cannot replicate or help you build the skills you need in a social services job, it cannot help you learn how to build trust and it can't help you learn how to meet people with respect no matter where they come from. It cannot teach you how to get information out of a patron or client in as few questions as possible. It cannot teach you patience or how to deescalate a situation. These are things you need to be taught by a person who has done them before, these are things best taught by experts in their field. A LLM will not teach you how to recognize danger in a patron, it will not teach you how to navigate difficult emotional tasks when talking with others. ChatGPT cannot replace emotion based human connection.

It cannot teach you how the skills you need to survive and thrive in a social services or people based job because it does not have the experience needed to reach into all the nuances that come with the job. If you're going into a people focused field you need to be able to interact with people. ChatGPT is not going to teach you that.

star trek is about. .,the sixties

It sure is.

This is fantastic, and it very much captures the essential queerness of their relationship in a way that I feel is sometimes sidelined from discussions of what's going on between them. There's a quote from George Takei about the intensity of the scenes between Kirk and Spock that sticks with me:

“from the perspective of gay people, seeing that is eye-opening. They see the gay passion, the gay attraction, and the gay anguish depicted in those scenes.”

I understand the desire for one of the most iconic quasi-utopias in SF/F to also be a quasi-utopia for queer people, to imagine we could just fall in love and get married and nobody would blink an eye because it's the better future. I get the desire to imagine that as the context of Kirk's and Spock's lives specifically. It's not any kind of moral affront. But it's just not what I see happening on the screen in TOS.

a new updated and significantly worse version of The Game (sorry) directed at a specific subset of chronically online people has infact been circling since the mid-2010s. and it is lost when one fumbles while attempting to plug their phone in to charge at night

To this day,

"if she's your girl then why is her leitmotif part of my theme" "to highlight the tragedy of how she'll never love you back"

is one of the most brutal pieces of play banter that I've read on this website. One of those shitposts that keep coming back to you. Damn.

Teens are doxxing their own dads for being ICE.

Round of applause to these teens.

The kids are all right on 1,102 days left

This is unfortunately not true. It originated on a satire news site called The Halfway Post:

This is a great reminder to always check your sources.

Addressing Misinformation

Whether it's deliberate or not, some people have surfaced who are spreading misinformation about what's going on in Iran, claiming that it's the doing of the CIA or Mossad, which is categorically false.

Let's review a brief, but not comprehensive, list of problems that people have been dealing with for decades:

  • Violence against anyone who speaks up against the regime
  • Rape and torture of prisoners
  • Executions after 10 to 15-minute trials
  • Religious and ethnic repression
  • Oppression of women and LGBT people
  • Child marriage
  • Neglect and destruction of the environment
  • Disregard and destruction of Iran's pre-Islamic heritage, which has always been important to Iranians and even more important now as an act of resistance (See how they're letting Persepolis fall into ruin.)
  • Stealing Iranian's money to line their own pockets and fund lavish lifestyles, which go completely against the lifestyle they force on people
  • Funding terrorist proxies
  • Economic collapse
  • Poverty and starvation
  • No water and electricity
  • Internet censorship

This isn't outside interference. This is Iranians rising up again as part of their ongoing fight against nearly 47 years of oppression and wanting to take back their country to live the lives they deserve. To claim otherwise disregards the agency of Iranians and implies that they only must live under a terrorist regime. It's an insult to the memory of all people who have sacrificed their lives until now to fight the regime, whitewashes the regime's actions, and erases the regime's victims.

“you can’t hate ICE agents for wanting a fat paycheck” ah yes. people who are willing to disregard all morals for cash. congratulations you played right into their hands you uneducated piece of shit

you couldn’t pay me an amount even feasible to do this evil shit. you are lower than dirt

This. You can and should judge people for working for ICE, they're people who willingly signed up for an American secret police force that's violating the rights of people constantly in order to act as enforcers of a fascist government.

Basically everyone is not an ICE agent. Like, virtually all of us, the entire population, are not ICE agents. No matter how steep our bills are, very nearly every single American is not an ICE agent.

We can, and should, judge them forever. It should be the sort of thing their grandkids are ashamed to discover. The sort of thing that hamstrings a career forever. "What were you doing in 2025-26? Oh, you were with ICE? Thank you for your time, get out right now."

They should all be judged and shunned for the rest of their lives.

The funniest thing I've learned in the last day is that the "$50K bonus" only pays out after 5 years of service.

Like, lmao, you thought Trump was gonna give you a big chunk of cash? Silly.

I wonder what the actual pay is, and whether that additional 10K a year makes it a livable wage.

99% of them will never get that money regardless bc agents are washing out and quitting faster than they can handwave more through because, well...

I've been seriously under-employed for over a year now. I have never considered joining ICE for even one solitary second.

#i did go back to school and finally earn my associate's degree though!

Congratulations!!

the vibes dissonance of ppl online can be crazy. did you know the artist behind those cutesy crow comics that do big numbers on here ran hiveworks into the ground so hard that 100 artists who worked w them came together to put out a statement abt how they and their work had been absolutely fucked by the incompetency and malice of it all

kind of floored by the amount of people in the notes who only found out that isa the crow time artist and isa one of the two architects of the hiveworks trainwreck are in fact the same person bc of this post

I just want to add for the sake of connecting more dots in people's heads:

Isa's online handle is Secondlina

and, before making the cutesy crow time comics—which to be more specific with some visuals since there are actually a few crow webcomics out there, are these ones:

—she started with and still makes a comic called Namesake, which looks like this:

which may be a slightly more familiar name for the people familiar with hiveworks, being that it has always had a rather prominent placement on the hiveworks website.

Sorry about the rant I'm just SO sick of this "we have to be on all the time never look away if you aren't upset about politics and traumatizing yourself watching people die on Twitter you're wrong and complicit and evil" like I know things are fucked and we need to stay angry but we can do that while also taking a minute to crack open a cold one with the boys or have gay sex or get tipsy at the line dance, we HAVE to have joy to remember why the fuck we're refusing to give up in the first place. Fight like hell for your loved ones and then also go home with them to smoke weed and drink sweet tea and make biscuits covered in honey and butter please, please don't deprive yourself of joy, you're allowed to be happy BEFORE the work is done. You're allowed to be happy.

The lady I used to live with was adamant that there be a party at any opportunity. They weren't always big, but if there was an occasion in the slightest, there was something done to celebrate it. Sometimes she literally would just say, "this deserves a Diet Coke!" And she would pass me a can from her stash in the closet.

It's important context that she had a very hard life into adulthood. Very poor family. Abusive father. Mentally ill mother. She often had to miss school as a teenager because she had to go find her mother, who would wander off for days into the woods. She also made sure her other siblings were fed, clothed, and at school while she herself was missing out on them.

I once asked her why she did so much celebrating.

She told me that people can choose to celebrate the small stuff if they want to, or not, but life was hard enough and the celebrations, no matter how small, made the other hard things easier. "If two people lead hard lives, and one of them celebrates and the other doesn't, which do you think will survive longer? Get more done? Make it farther?"

Your despondence and self-flagellation doesn't help anyone. Your passion and drive do. So you need to do things that ignite your passions and keep them ignited. Recognize that there is pain and awful suffering in the world. Do what you can to change that. Then do what you need to do to make sure you can keep doing it.

the problem with the idea that we can bully cis men out of toxic masculinity is that toxic masculinity is fundamentally about bullying people seen as men into "proper" behavior. the patriarchy is absolutely in love with casual cruelty and shame as a way of modifying behavior. and whenever i see people trying to use toxic masculinity tactics but for feminist aims it makes me want to bite the walls. oh wow you are telling depressed boys that if they feel bad about themselves its all their fault for being a whiny bitch? are you also selling a $200 get rich quick scheme and sawdust supplements by any chance
