do any of you guys know about halacha regarding mikvot and conversions because i know someone about to have their beit din and finish converting and they said theyd be wearing a bathing suit to the "mikvah" which is actually a public lake. and like yeah i get that part i dont think public indecency is the answer, but I'm wondering if their conversion will even be valid. ive been suspcious of their rabbi before for being a little too progressive in ways that could jeopardize their conversion and i dont want them to work so hard just to not officially be jewish. anyway are the swim trunks ok bc its the law or should i suggest they find another location?

ok the council of jumblr has confirmed this is not halachically sound which i suspected but wasnt absolutely sure of. what do you guys suggest i do because i dont wanna be like "haha you cant be jewish now!" because of course they can but i also want them to be aware that their conversion may not be seen as valid outside of this one congregation. i also think its weird as shit that the rabbi presented it as ok. if they had said it wasnt ok but it was literally the only option then id get that more but lying about halacha is so messed up

Ok I've gathered a short list of sources for evidence and also wrote a long message to my friend explaining how fucked up this is. my actual list of evidence is much longer but I dont think they need to be bombarded with all that right now. I'm gonna tell them tonight and it's not gonna be easy but they need to know this esp since their beit din was supposed to be within the next month or 2. they even wanted to make aliyah after converting and this "rabbi" still never told them that their conversion wouldnt even be recognized by Israel. I actually feel sick this is so messed up.

I love converts and real converts are real jews but unfortunately this is a growing trend with false conversions that are very scary and are going to cause a lot of problems in the future with marriages and aliyah and people finding out they were scammed and were never converted. Its also leading to a lot more "as a jew"s

I dont know how the minister to officiate a wedding works, but I know of know of no branch or stream of Judaism that will accept as a rabbi someone who bought the title online. Thats not a thing. At all. For anything.

I have to ask, is this so-called rabbi even Jewish themself? Who is this bet din theyre working with? Id question and look into everyone and every institution this so-called rabbi claims to be working with; either they dont know their "smicha" cones from the rice bubbles box or theyre equally sketchy for accepting that.

Your friend can still convert just not via this person.

Also what conversions israel does and doesnt accept is more complicated on top of this, its some absolute bullshit how they can decide what counts on sheer force of numbers and that the rabbanut is a government elected position but thats a differrent rant. Basically your friend needs to be really sure israel will accept their conversion if they want to make aliyah, thats super important, it might need to be orthodox im not sure.

This whole situation stinks; its not your friends fault, its the fault of this person calling themself a rabbi claiming to do conversion, and of the people selling this "ordination". What bullshit.

yes they are jewish. the beit din are people they themselves elected because theyre all friends previous to working together which explains a lot.

i have absolutely no clue if that friend even finished converting, last i heard they had joined a new synagogue with real qualifications. we are not friends now because they outed me to a known transphobe and got upset when i yelled at them
