why is it able to instantly liquify a bay leaf but struggles with garlic 😭
it’s fine—I turned it off and started trying to fish out the bay leaf bits with a fork
okay actually though. How bad is it really to have bay leaf in there?? looking it up
Okay so it’s Not Ideal but I’m just gonna blend it more and Deal With It
I’m giving the swiffer a 4/10 rating for its ability to clean ceilings btw

A light in my house suddenly turned on- AND WHO DO I SEE?!?!
I thinks folks expressing incredulity at the quality of the writing and composition in Calvin and Hobbes are often missing the context that Bill Watterson is arguably the most influential sequential artist of his generation. Like, this is a guy who once told the editors of nationally syndicated newspapers to go fuck themselves when they wanted to mess with his panel layouts, and not only did he keep his job, he got his way. He could have had literally any gig he wanted, and he chose to be the Sunday funnies guy because that's what made him happy. He's basically the Weird Al of sequential art.
Watterson considers comics to be as true an art form as painting and films and literature, capable of reaching just as high as any other medium. Calvin and Hobbes isn't accidentally high art. Watterson made it what it is on purpose. And when he was done, he stopped. No movie, no spinoff, no reboot. He considers the comic to be its completed form, in exactly the medium it is supposed to be. He believed in comics in a way few others ever have, and he fought tooth and nail for the right to take his own work, jokes and all, seriously.
there's a comedian who I love whose name is Josh Johnson. because his comedy isn't JUST comedy. I sit down to watch one of his videos and I know he's about to change the way I view something. like he did a video talking about Kendrick Lamar's Super Bowl half time performance where he said,
"art can save your life, art can absolutely save your life. I believe it from the bottom of my heart. but believe me when I tell you entertainment will never be your salvation. art can save your life, but entertainment–by and large is escapism. and no one has ever escaped their chains by forgetting they were there. so you, you cannot, when I tell you, you will not be saved through entertainment alone."
anyway. I just think about that a lot. you can watch the entire video here. and I strongly recommend you do.
I *love* Josh Johnson.
Ran across a Josh Johnson video for the first time around 7-8 years ago, and he was so funny and smart and insightful.
I'm absolutely thrilled that he's getting the credit he's due, because he is really a phenomenal thinker and speaker.
A non-comprehensive list of media that makes me go "your house really shouldn't be doing that, man":

The bottom is peeling off my ancient slow cooker (not sure how, maybe I dropped it?) and that seems like it could become electrically unsafe if it keeps happening but I really really do not want to have to replace my slow cooker because I just KNOW that if I do I'll talk myself into upgrading into a slow cooker/pressure cooker combo (I've never had a pressure cooker before) and that is simply not in budget.
At least that would fall under the advice my grandmother gave me - never buy a kitchen gadget that only does one thing.
Just the slow cooker only does "one thing" in the same way that a microwave does "one thing" or an oven does "one thing". I think your grandma meant like, dedicated egg poachers and banana slicers.
But a combo does indeed do more things. The question is, are they more things I would make use of? I've never had a pressure cooker so I have no idea whether I'd actually use it (once the novelty wore off).
As far as I understand it, aside from being able to do jobs a slow cooker cannot (like canning, I think?) a pressure cooker lets you do what a slow cooker does, but fast. That whole 'fall off the bone tender after four hours in the slow cooker' deal, but in 45 minutes or something.
I would appreciate a fast cooker.
In the future, when finances improve.
Derin you can cook dried beans So Easily. Its amazing. Like it makes them worthwhile to have as pantry food again
That's great to hear I'm always forgetting to soak the beans and having to delay my bean meals. You guys need to stop telling me how cool these things are one is NOT in budget right now.
#I’ve always been utterly terrified of pressure cookers#but this may have been because my grandmother owned one older than she was
I used to have to autoclave so much bullshit in the lab, I am immune to that particular fear.
How are you not falling over with this many devils on your shoulder and no angels to balance it out
If I had spare cash right now then I actually wouldn't have spare cash but I would have a pressure cooker coming in the mail.
And that's why people should BUY DERIN'S BOOKS so they can get a pressure cooker.
(pssst, Derin, add a link to this with your shop n stuff)

Pronouncing each of these in sequence is a very strange and amusing physical sensation, and I highly recommend it.
