Past Life Spoilers!

the Villies literally had me in a chokehold this season. They were my dream team (+ Etho), literally the group I wanted to happen most. And it was clear from the beginning that the Villains always lose.

there’s something to right about Pearl being out first. Loyal to a fault, but it was always Gem and Grian. And Pearl. It was always Gem and Grian, until Pearl was useful, until she could kill. She had no good reason to stay loyal, but she did. It’s only right Gem and Grian faced the last episode alone.

Grian uses her as an excuse to kill Jimmy, but really, it’s just that he thinks that’s how the story goes, the canary needs to die. It’s more poetic that way.

it’s only right that Gem died because Grian pushed her. This entire episode was about skynet, about icarus and trust and Grian spent the so much of it knocking down supposed allies. It’s the proper, villainous thing to do, to betray your final teammate to win. It’s a mistake, "villains never win", he says as he thinks he’ll be the last one standing, a villain the victor at last.

it’s only right that Grian loses. Villains never win after all. Karma, or just bad luck. But it’s night when the fight begins, a moon in the sky. And Grian falls, like Icarus, like Gem. Villains never win.
