Rules of DIY:

  1. if it's a skill, there's rules you can learn
  2. if it's an art, rules are not your concern
  3. make it fucked up or you won't make it
  4. if it's already broken, you can't break it
  5. anything can be fixed with gorilla glue
  6. except for pleather, and also you

When I was in the hospital, they gave me a big bracelet that said ALLERGY, but like. I'm allergic to bees. Were they going to prescribe me bees in there.

So there's a medication called hyaluronidase. It's used to make other medications absorb better, because it makes the cell wall more permeable.

One common usage is to make local anesthetic more effective during surgery, for instance. It's used in a number of injected medications.

Bee stings contain an enzyme very similar to this medication, so sometimes, people with bee allergies have an allergic reaction to hyaluronidase.

This is called cross-reactivity, where your body mistakes something for the thing it's actually allergic to, and has an allergic reaction anyway. For instance, sometimes people with latex allergies also are allergic to bananas and other fruits. They don't actually contain latex, but there are some similar proteins.

Apparently, hyraluronidase used in humans is derived from one of four sources: sheep testicles, cow testicles, cow testicles again, and GMO hamster ovaries.

tl;dr: They won't inject you with bees, but they might inject you with purified cow testicle juice, and your body might say 'eh, cow balls are BASICALLY bees' and try to kill you anyway.

Telling someone 'no' when you have a boundary is actually doing them a huge favor. Cool people will love you for this. People who are angry or weird about this are not worth caring about at all, and they are the ones being rude to YOU no matter what anyone says.

Y'know, to me "lost media" means "no known physical copies exist and it can't be pirated anywhere", not just "currently unavailable for streaming"

A file you can just find and download with minimal issue if you're computer literate isn't lost, actually. It's endangered, and it will be lost if nobody bothers to learn how to do this stuff, but it's not lost yet.

One thing I’ve become a real extremist about is little girl’s clothing and hair styles because if your kid can’t get her hair wet, hang upside down, climb over a fence or run full out in the outfit/hair she is currently wearing then why not? And the answer better be both extremely fucking good and describe something temporary.

Hope you don't mind a story that also made me extremist about this issue.

Took my friends daughter (2.5yrs) to the park. Dressed her in practical clothing that's ok to get stained, brought an extra change of clothing. She sat in the mud at the water bank and played with rocks and mud. A little girl came over, couldn't be more than 3yrs. She was looking longingly at my friend's daughter. She has her hair in a perfect style and she's wearing a pretty dress with white socks and dressy shoes. The parents say "Sweetie don't go into the mud, you'll get your dress dirty" and pull her away, while giving me a judgmental look as they see the kid in my charge covered in mud and throwing rocks into the water. It felt really weird, like we saw eachother as aliens with completely different ideas on how to raise children. When my friends daughter was done playing, changed her into clean clothing and went back home. She had a lot of fun at the park and a day full of nature and play. The other little girl kept her dress clean.

When my daughter was getting close to school age, I remember walking past her future school with my mum and noting that all the little boys were wearing the uniform trousers and all the little girls were wearing skirts. And I mentioned that I hoped the uniform policy allowed for girls to wear trousers. My mum asked why, and I outlined several reasons, including "because kids fall over when they're running and playing, and skinned knees are more likely if she's only allowed to wear skirts."

And my mum said "well, maybe in that case she'd learn to be more careful."

Aaaaand I think my resulting reaction of horror at the idea of forcing 50% of children to play more carefully due to clothing requirements made her realise exactly what she'd just said.

(The uniform policy does indeed allow her to wear trousers. She's now 10 and still prefers them)

elixir of having a terrible fucking trip

they were using this as an anesthetic potion. they were like “well, we’ve got to set your leg. we think it’d be better if we sent you to experience ego death in the shadow realm than be awake for this.”

Anonymous asked:

What would a Yankee Candle go for in ancient Greece?

tbh the most confusing thing about it to them would probably be the glass that the candle is contained in. They might try to buy information about glass from you.

Yeah basically

Yeah I should’ve clarified (pun intended). They had glass in the ancient world especially in Rome and Egypt but it was basically super heated sand and color additives put in a mold and often looked opaque and kinda lumpy. Even if it was blown like it was in some regions it wouldn’t have looked like modern glass.

Clear blown glass like you’d see a modern scented candle contained in wasn’t invented until the late Middle Ages and certainly wasn’t mass produced until the 1500s and even then places like Venice that had knowledge of these techniques literally forbid their glassmakers from leaving their city or region so other people couldn’t make it, forcing artificial scarcity and making it a very expensive material.

So if you showed a yankee candle to an Ancient Greek, especially one from a city or something, they’d be like burning scented wax okay not something I’d do but it makes sense. Also how the fuck is that glass transparent.

Like imagine if someone brought you something weird but understandable contained in a material that they said was made out of wood and you could tell that it’s clearly made out of wood they’re not lying about that but it was also completely transparent and see through with no visible flaws. That’s about the level of weird we’re talking about here.

It isnt flawless, but transparent wood does already exist actually

What the fuck I feel like a medieval peasant seeing an iPhone

Who goes there

horse owners are either extremely far right or extremely far left. horseshoe theory but for owning an actual horse. I guess it’s because apolitical moderate weirdos are too weak to steer a horse in either direction. you have to have some sort of conviction to ride a horse, they can tell when you’re wavering and they will ignore you.

That might just be rural people I’m afraid
