The original idea, floated by Maddie during one of their after shift breakfasts, was a surprise party.

“We can do it at Bobby and Athena’s house,” Maddie said. Tommy found himself involuntarily smiling. It had been months, but the part of him that loved excuses not to be a cynical asshole always felt warm and fuzzy remembering it was Bobby and Athena’s house now. The two of them had gotten married at the courthouse with only their kids as witnesses a few weeks after the truck bombing. Evan was still a little put out that he wasn’t invited, even though he had to admit he didn’t have, ha ha, a leg to stand on.

“… Uh. Hey dude.” The guy also standing by the weight rack says in a loud whisper. “I think some lady’s uh. Fucking recording you.”

“Yeah,” Tommy says glancing over to where she’s loitering by the stairmaster with her phone up, and has been for a while. “I know.”

The guy turns around and looks directly at her. She either doesn’t notice or doesn’t care.
