!!!I think i get it now!!!
This is more thoughts based on a previous post I made
I didn't go into any of the points i wanted to make on that original post cause it went completely off the rails when i got all sucked up in the fic scene i ended up writing. So, I'll do a brief summary of some of the things I wanted to say originally, then go into some further thoughts...
Like everyone else, I think it's super cute to see the change in relationship and the gradual shift in dynamic between Argos and Mr. Plant.
I'm always happy to see those two and the progress of their relationship.
But I feel like- or I thought I felt like, some things were lost along the way? And I didn't quite have the words to put all my thoughts in order at the time- aside from just getting wrapped up in plargos and fic lmaoo.
But I've been still hanging on that post a lot and its original sentiment and I think I can way better convey how I feel about the series than before.
But first I also want to say, I know that the medium Ashur is working with has its limits, as well as the fact that Ashur is the soul person working on the show. That puts a lot of constraints on things and leaves Ashur with the ability to only do so much, and he's working hard and doing a lot with it!! And for that, I think Ashur is doing an incredible job!
Still, I do wish we had the time to linger on things a little more? The inbetweens, the lows, the conflicts, etc. The stuff that leads up to the changes and realizations in the cast, you know?
Early on we got a bit of that with Mr. Plant and his feelings towards Argos (good and bad) and I know Ashur's style is episodic- things tend to all start, rise and resolve in one neatly packed episode at a time. Which is not a bad thing! It's kind of impressive, really.
But sometimes I wish we could linger on things for a while.
Sometimes I wish some things could have been divided into little mini arcs, y'know? Little two to three episode specials or something from time to time...
In the beginning, it takes a while for Mr. Plant to fully come around to Argos and I feel like that crescendos nicely up until the Valentine's day ep when they finally get together. o vo
I feel like- and maybe some people will disagree with me, and that's totally fine! But I feel like I would have loved to linger a bit more on how Argos feels about how he's felt about his behaviour in the past.
It's not like it ever goes unaddressed!!
We see it a bit more in the birthday ep, where Argos is openly aware about he can be a bit impulsive and presumptuous, and obviously the Tulip ep really sheds some light on some- other fun qualities Argos has.
But I feel like it would have been fun for it to be a much more slow and messy build. I would have loved to see Argos fuck up more- maybe for it to even build into a conflict between him and Mr. Plant for a bit before Argos ever comes to realization about his own shortcomings, y'know?
Am I making sense?
I hope so- i struggle putting thoughts into words.
But, this is kind of the gist about how I feel about the switch between Mr. Plant and Argos' on screen behaviour in some ways as well.
Like, it feels like it kind of just happened and we didn't get to see any of the how- I mean we do in some ways (Mr. Plant's dad ep as one example), but they feel like the eps are just very quick snap shots, and that there's still a lot of inbetween that I WISH i could peel back the covers and peak into more, ya know?? Or more on screen stuff, because I feel like the explanation for the switch comes in writing on the plushies.
(Argos being the one to keep Mr. Plant calm and less violent)
And again, I don't want to come off negatively in anyway.
Like I said before, I appreciate all the work Ashur puts into his shows.
The character designs, the personality in their mannerisms, there are very, VERY few TWOMP eps i dislike. I could probably count them on one hand and I truly can only think of one ep off the top of my head I wasn't a fan of.
I say all this but I'm not saying we don't see enough in the sense that there's no effort. I never wanna sound like I'm saying THAT.
There's still so much packed already in the stuff Ashur DOES put out.
I'll always love twomp and the rest of Ashur's works, and I think some of this critique(..?) just comes from the rabid fan in me who wants to sink his teeth into MORE of the characters. So this rant is a little bit rooted in greed perhaps? lmaoo
But never at Ashur's expense. 😭
I know the poor guy works hard to keep up a lot of the time.
As a one person show, Ashur is knocking it out of the fucking park.
Anyway, i'll cut it here since it's getting too long and I feel the train of concentration reeling off the tracks.
I hope any of this made sense.
