| ECHOLALIA |
Role: Caretaker and Recordkeeper of Hatchlings
Because of Echolalia’s unique pattern of speech, many dragons grossly underestimate their capabilities, and find themselves surprised to discover that they are really quite clever.
Named for this strange anomaly in communication, Echolalia–who is occasionally referred to as Echo and Lalia individually, but more often together as one entity–her only method of speech seems to be mimicking the words of others. This echoing is sometimes compulsive, with both heads reflexively repeating whatever they’d heard (and sometimes echoing each other’s echoes on top of it), while other times the echos seem to be utilized in an attempt to communicate. These intentional echoes are often accompanied by gestures to help convey whatever it is that they are trying to say.
Despite this handicap, Echolalia has wonderful talent when it comes to caring for hatchlings. Together with Sallow, they serve as one of the primary caretakers for all new hatchlings who become part of the clan–whether born to Ossuary nests or acquired from elsewhere–and monitor their growth all the way through adolescence. Sallow handles the more comforting and affectionate aspects of hatchling care, while Echolalia focuses more on play and education, as well as keeping meticulous records as the hatchlings grow.
Most hatchlings don't seem to mind Echolalia's communication handicap, with many catching on more quickly to what they're trying to say than the adults do. Also, mimicking can be lots of fun... so, every once in a while, the entire hatchery can be heard erupting into an extended chorus of echoes.
