Assertor wasn't born as Gaoler. He was an Imperial dragon named Shadr, born in the Tangled Wood. His parents specialized in combat, from a young age Shadr was fascinated by this too and he began training and helping his parents in battles. It was the first time when he met the Shade-affected creatures - they were different from "ordinary" creatures for him. Like many other dragons, he didn't see the Shade, but seemed to sense it, and sought to fight against it. He learned about the existence of the Shade and how it affects living beings from the clan elders and parents, which only strengthened his desire to fight it.

Time passed. Shadr grew up and became a really good warrior - like other Imperials, he devoted himself wholeheartedly to his chosen craft. And this time when Gaolers were revealed to the world. The reveal of the first ancient breed excited the whole Sornieth, and rumors about how it was connected with the Shade quickly spread to all modern clans. Shadr was inspired by the idea of joining the Gaolers in this fight against the Shade, so he left his clan and headed to the ice fortresses of the Gaolers.

At first Gaolers were wary of a particularly persistent stranger, a Shadow Imperial, who brazenly asked to join their ranks. But at that time they had already found their connection with the modern species, and therefore accepted the stubborn Imperial into their ranks. Shadr changed his breed to Gaoler at his own free will and joined the restored Seeker Order. He was given a new name, Assertor, and since then his life has been devoted to hunting down and capturing the Shade.

He may appear rude, intimidating and brutish, but actually he is rather introverted and sees no point in being friendly without close relationships. Of course he will never leave a dragon in need or in trouble, but he won't try to make friends with him just as he won't start any communication without necessity, and his seriousness only plays into the hands of the image of a "fearsome and rude guy". Despite his appearance, Assertor is gentle, loyal and open to those who really close to him.

He's used to a wayfaring lifestyle because he moves around a lot while hunting for a Shade-touched creatures. He's not comfortable staying in one place for a long time, but most often he's found on the Shadow Flight territory.
