Hi, I'm migrating from IB6.0/Win32 to FB2.0/.NET. So far, my test application works fine with FB2.0/Provider2.0.1/.NET2.0. But, for some transition period, I need to run Provider2.0.1/.NET2.0 applications with old IB6.0. In my test unit, it seems to work but it takes too long (25seconds) to connect to IB6.0. My connection string is: strConn = @"character set=NONE;data source=192.168.xxx.xxx;dialect=1;initial catalog=d:\test\test.gdb;user id=abcde;password=xyz123"; Any advice? Nobuya |

Hi, FB2.0.1/FBClinet2.0.1/.NET2.0 Is batch query supported with FB2.0/Provider2.0.1? By batch query, I mean putting two or more SQL sentences into a single FbCommand (e.g. FbDataAdapter's UpdateCommand) like: update xxx set x1 = @x1, ...; select x1, x2, ... from xxx ... ; thanks in advance, Nobuya |

I have a field in a table named Type, and declared as Char(1). What I'm finding is that when I retrieve that column with a SELECT, the result is padded to the length of the field name (e.g. 4 chars, the length of "Type"). This causes serious problems, for instance if I do "SELECT Type from TableName" in a DataReader, then Load that into a DataTable, it throws an exception, because it figures out that the schema only allows for a character length of 1 for the Type column, but the returned data is 4 characters long. Is this a known bug? What can I do about it? I would rather not have to rename my Type column to "T"! |

Hi all! In SQL Server there is an attribute called Async in the connection string, that instructs ADO.NET to perform asynchronous request. Is there something similar in the Firebird .NET provider? Regards, Jon. |

Enlistment does not work with pooled connections ------------------------------------------------ Key: DNET-91 URL: http://tracker.firebirdsql.org/browse/DNET-91 Project: .NET Data provider Issue Type: Bug Components: ADO.NET Provider Affects Versions: 2.1.0 Beta 3 Environment: windows Reporter: Barry Schwarz Assignee: Carlos Guzman Alvarez Enlistment of pooled connections fails because the internal connections has no owning connection when the enlistment is attempted. Hi! Thanks! I have downloaded the assembly from that site and its working fine. Now I am able to select the record from database and show it on the form. The database is (and must be) a physical file on the server host machine...not a network share, mapped drive, etc.). You can provide this in one of two ways: a) as a verbatim path b) as an alias, referring to a verbatim path you have defined in aliases.conf in Firebird's root directory Preceding the path or alias, you must provide either the node name or the IP address of the host machine. TCP/IP is recommended: Consider a database file named mydata.fdb, located in a machine named fbserver at IP address 10.1.1.99, on partition (or physical disk) D: in a folder named databases. The following connection formats are valid for a TCP/IP connection: fbserver:D:\databases\mydata.fdb 10.1.1.99:D:\databases\mydata.fdb For now, you may also use a proprietary Windows (named pipes~NetBeui) networking connection, as follows: \\fbserver\D:\databases\mydata.fdb This isn't recommended for serious work, however. It is noisy and error-prone and will be dropped in future. >In fact why should we have to specify the location of database? A database server can serve multiple databases and Firebird is client/server software. Clients connect to Firebird databases across heterogeneous networks. Different server platforms have different filesystems and different ways of naming files. So, for example, your client program could connect to the same database running on a Linux server fbserverx, as follows: fbserverx:/databases/mydata.fdb >Such a thing is not necessary in MS SQL Server, where we just have >to give Database Name only and we can access all the tables in the database. But you can't run MS SQL Server anywhere else but on Windows, can you? Firebird servers can run on anything: Linux, HP-X, MacOSX, Solaris, etc., etc. >Can someone enlighten me here. It seems you need to read up on the most basic documentation...starting with the Getting Started guide in your doc folder. You might also like to Google for "Client/server", "cross-platform" and "interoperability" to understand some fundamental concepts of computing as it exists beyond the feathered nest of Microsoft. It would also be useful for you to visit the Lists page at the Firebird website ( http://firebirdsql.org/index.php?op=lists ) to find out which lists are appropriate for the questions you want to ask; and http://firebirdsql.org/index.php?op=doc to search for documentation resources... This is in fact not related to net provider, so for next time better to ask in support list. But. This is about aliases. Look at some Quick Start Guide for this topic and you'll understand. |

I am learning to use Firebird and its .NET provider. We have installed Firebird on a separate PC (call it dbserver). I am using a separate PC on which I have WinXP and VS2005 installed. I am using EMS SQL Manager Lite for Firebird management. Using this I have created a dummy database, which has got only one table in it. When ever I try to connect the FB server I get the message that you have to specify DB location. What is this? How can I find the location of a database on a remote server? If the FB is running on a separate remote machine how can we specify the location of database? In fact why should we have to specify the location of database? Such a thing is not necessary in MS SQL Server, where we just have to give Database Name only and we can access all the tables in the database. Can someone enlighten me here. Thanks in advance. For me it is very usefull behavior. I think Microsoft's behavior much more bad. |

FbCommand closes the ActiveReader when is disposed. This behavior is diferent from other DbCommand implemetations ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Key: DNET-89 URL: http://tracker.firebirdsql.org/browse/DNET-89 Project: .NET Data provider Issue Type: Bug Components: ADO.NET Provider Affects Versions: 2.1.0 Beta 3 Environment: Windows XP Reporter: Fabiano Rezende Assignee: Carlos Guzman Alvarez >From FbCommand.cs: protected override void Dispose(bool disposing) { lock (this) { if (!this.disposed) { try { // If there are an active reader close it this.CloseReader(); <<<====== . . . this.disposed = true; } finally { base.Dispose(disposing); } } } } IMHO all ADO.NET provider must have the same behavior. For example: The Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Data.Database has the following method that returns a DataReader public IDataReader ExecuteReader(string storedProcedureName, params object[] parameterValues) { using (DbCommand command = GetStoredProcCommand(storedProcedureName, parameterValues)) { return ExecuteReader(command); } // << command is disposed here and the returned DataReader will be closed } -- This message is automatically generated by JIRA. - If you think it was sent incorrectly contact one of the administrators: http://tracker.firebirdsql.org/secure/Administrators.jspa - For more information on JIRA, see: http://www.atlassian.com/software/jira |

Hello, this code works on MS SQL (returns always 0 (table was empty)): using (TransactionScope ts = new TransactionScope()) { InsertTestMS(); //ts.Complete(); } Console.WriteLine(SelectTestMS()); private static int SelectTestMS() { using (SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(@"Data Source=.\sqlexpress;Initial Catalog=test1;Integrated Security=True;Pooling=False")) { conn.Open(); using (SqlCommand cmd = conn.CreateCommand()) { cmd.CommandText = "select count(id) from ts;"; return (int)cmd.ExecuteScalar(); } } } private static void InsertTestMS() { using (SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(@"Data Source=.\sqlexpress;Initial Catalog=test1;Integrated Security=True;Pooling=False")) { conn.Open(); using (SqlCommand cmd = conn.CreateCommand()) { cmd.CommandText = "insert into ts values (1);"; cmd.ExecuteNonQuery(); } } } But on FB it inserts record no matter that no call of Complete method was done. Did I miss something? private static int SelectTestFB() { using (FbConnection conn = new FbConnection(@"port=3050;charset=NONE;dialect=3;servertype=0;datasource=localhost;database=test;userid=SYSDBA;password=masterkey;enlist=true")) { conn.Open(); using (FbCommand cmd = conn.CreateCommand()) { cmd.CommandText = "select count(id) from ts;"; return (int)cmd.ExecuteScalar(); } } } private static void InsertTestFB() { using (FbConnection conn = new FbConnection(@"port=3050;charset=NONE;dialect=3;servertype=0;datasource=localhost;database=test;userid=SYSDBA;password=masterkey;enlist=true")) { conn.Open(); using (FbCommand cmd = conn.CreateCommand()) { cmd.CommandText = "insert into ts values (1);"; cmd.ExecuteNonQuery(); } } } -- Jiri {x2} Cincura http://blog.vyvojar.cz/jirka/ | http://www.ID3renamer.com |

This article It's possible when working against Sql Server, but firebird has no way to get the number of rows affected by an stored procedure. |

This article<http://www.csharpfriends.com/Articles/getArticle.aspx?articleID=78>( http://www.csharpfriends.com/Articles/getArticle.aspx?articleID=78) claims that it's possible to get rows affected with stored procedures.
