Live action Sailor Moon! At long last, how are you enjoying it? 🤩
Hey!
Yes, thanks to a friend I’ve finally decided to commit to it and finally watch PGSM. I’m up to episode 6 for now and here are thoughts that I’ll list at random.
PLEASE DO NOT SPOIL ME. I ALREADY KNOW SOME STUFF ABOUT PGSM BUT NOT ALL. DON’T TELL ME SOMETHING ASSUMING I ALREADY KNOW ABOUT IT.
- First of all, if you were to ever make sailor moon live action (which is honestly the worst way to adapt sm srry, sm is perfect for the medium of animation in my mind) this is the way to do it. You can’t take the show TOO seriously and the show has fun, which I seriously appreciate. In some ways it’s more campy that the 90’s anime.
- I’m LOVING the characters and characterizations. They’re different, but they still fit the character and the spins they put on each one I think works wonderfully to make them feel endeering and interesting. I’m adoring Ami especially (Mako too, but I’ve only had one ep with her so far). The small but meaning gestures and expressions make Ami feel like the most ‘real’ version of Ami I’ve seen. She actually feels like an awkward, shy and anxious nerd in my school, instead of just being told that is that by other characters and her rarely behaving as such on screen.(cough cough, all other adaptations except very few moments in the 90s anime, cough cough)
- I wanna see more Ikuko. I freaking adore that woman. That type of character is more along the lines of what I’d expect Usagi’s mom to be. She’s a lil crazy, all over the place, super spry and energetic, but still acts like a mom. It makes more sense to me given how canonically she’s still a young mother.
- All the background characters are very endeering. Idk it’s something I noticed in small moments but people who interact with the main cast emanate the type of comfort you get from the characters in a ghibli movie (this prob doesn’t make sense but it does to me, it’s a warm feeling)
- I like that you can see the chest protection on the uniforms. It’s a small thing, but given that the senshi uniforms are what they are (excellent and protective combat gear lol) , I appreciate them putting the thought to include notable padding on the chest for protection instead of just keeping the same material that’s on their abdomen.
- Queen Beryl’s actress is mother. Fr tho, she’s playing the role of her life and I love it.
- We actually got to see Mako have some kind of backstory with her parents!!! That is BIG for me.
- The basketball scene is better that the entirety of the Space Jam movie.
- The CGI is actually NOT as bad as I thought, it helps if you don’t take the show too seriously, again. It’s more charming and funny that cringe or embarrassing (compared to some modern movies it’s leagues better, lord). Though they need to stop changing CGI Luna’s model size. She changes from plush size to medium dog size very frequently and it’s pretty distracting cause it messes with the perspective.
- I like what they are doing with Mamo, he’s actually a thief, wow. I like when show shows me things instead of just telling me and never showing me.
- I’m enjoying the kings for now, though I feel like there’s still a lot I don’t know about the dark kingdom. For now it feels a bit like the 90’s anime but Beryl has turned up the aura.
- Ami is holding Luna most of the time. They are keeping my dear Ami Luna otp alive, ty for that.
- Rei and Usagi’s fights are worked in a perfect way to fit better into live action and stick more with the characters presented in this series. The joke is not “Usagi is dumb” and I always appreciate that. (I like their bickering in the 90’s but god the humor was always so reliant on that “Isn’t Usagi a dumbass” thing and it’s not only tiring but it’s the least funny type of joke for Usagi to me)
- It’s such a small and dumb thing but Usagi walking on the elevated lip of the bridge when walking alongside Mako for the first time is actually adorable to me.
- Ami with glasses +100 points obv
- The show is funny, it got some genuine laughs out of me even when I could see the joke coming.
OVERALL THOUGHTS, I’m afraid to say that the show might be as good as everyone warned me it was gonna be. I hate it when the people telling me something is THAT good are actually right and it IS THAT good. Damn you.
I’m not speed-running through it as I’m watching it with other people so I’m going at their pace, but I’ll keep you guys updated with my currents thoughts on it as I progress through the episodes.
