Review summary

Based on reviews, created with AI

Most reviewers were somewhat happy with their experience overall. People appreciate the user-friendly interface, noting its simplicity and modern design, which makes the filing process straightforward. Many users have had positive experiences over several years, particularly praising the site's ability to handle various forms without extra charges. However, some consumers have expressed concerns about refunds and payments, reporting issues such as incorrect refund amounts, payments not being credited, and unexpected fees. A number of reviewers have also mentioned problems with the website, including forms being deleted, difficulties in reviewing deductions before payment, and glitches leading to double billing. The pricing structure is another point of contention, with some users feeling that costs are not transparent and that they are misled about potential fees.

I efiled my federal and state taxes on…

I efiled my federal and state taxes on 1/25/26 and TaxFreeUSA owned by Tax Hawk stated my taxes were accepted by the IRS and the State of Colorado on 1/26/26. I have contacted them for a refund because as of today, 2/11/26, they still do not have my taxes. TaxFreeUSA informed me it would take weeks and if I wanted any further information, I would have to pay to upgrade my account. I can file my taxes directly on the State of Colorado website and they would have them now, but you are not allowed to file twice. Last year they blamed a delay on a tabor refund. Two years of issues with state taxes. I spoke with the tax division and they said TaxFreeUSA is giving me false information. I want my $15.99 that I paid for the State taxes refunded and have filed a BBB complaint.

Hi Marsha! We're sorry to hear you're not satisfied with your filing experience. We understand waiting on your refund can be frustrating. Colorado's website states that most refunds are received in 3-5 weeks after e-filing, which would mean you can expect your refund around 2/16 - 3/2 (for returns accepted 1/26).

https://tax.colorado.gov/refund

Our customer support agents are happy to help you free of charge via email and you may reach them any time by selecting the support option in your account. They can help you confirm that your returns were accepted and are being processed.

If you feel you're not getting adequate assistance with our support team, we'd be glad to assist you further. I've sent a request for your information if you need additional help. Please be sure to include your email address when responding to the request so that we can look into this.

Fed rtrn free if income low enough

They do Federal return free if income is low enough.

They flash a page about YOUR FED & STATE TAX RETURN IS FREE
.
BUT WHEN YOU GO TO FILE
They suggest efile much faster! The final pages want you to agree to they can take "fees from your refunds if any" No where did i see how & when what fees.
Tried to go back to those pages but couldnt. Logged me out back button.
.
To top it off my credit Union didn't get 1099 to me until Feb 7th. After my federal & state had been approved. Had to do an amendment ASAP!
.
AGAIN NO INDICATION OF FEES In the tax app.
$15.99 efile State
$16.98 efile amended state
$24.99 processing fees
$7.99 upgrade support.
.
This information should be next to the option example
E-file is FASTER But $15.99
Amendment e-file $16.99
.
Processing fee $24.99
ON WHAT? WHEN?
No matter what? If you efile?
.
So if i understand these undisclosed fees, My FREE FED & STATE COST ME $57.96 assuming they don't charge for amended Fed rtn in which case my rtn $74.94
These amounts i looked up on Google Ai. I have not seen my return yet.
.
But this information makes me feel like i got swindled.
I could have used other free for my $0 taxable income level & $155 grocery credit refund.
.
Turbo***** free $0 for simple tax returns
.
In my opinion they intentionally HIDE & mislead you about Costs
.
They're reply says rates & fees are in website.
So what? Middle of tax return stop log out, go to website to look for costs for free tax return?

If i get my grocery credit. I'll change this review. Otherwise not.

Hi there!

As advertised on our home page at www.FreeTaxUSA.com, the federal return is $0. On our website, the preparation and e-filing of your federal return is always 100% free. We never charge any fee to e-file any return.

We do charge a small, flat fee to prepare your state return, but each return includes all supported forms; we will never charge more if your return is more complicated. There is no obligation to file your state return, however, and you are always welcome to try it before paying to see if it works for you.

Should you not want to pay using your credit card, there is an option to pay using your refund, which does include an additional fee that is disclosed immediately should you choose that option.

You can see more about our pricing at this link:

https://www.freetaxusa.com/pricing/

We feel that our direct pricing for optional upgrades, ease of use, and access to customer support make our product the best value in the industry.

Website Glitches

Their website deleted a form after I entered it, unbeknownst to me. It affected my return amount significantly, so I needed to file a return. They would not waive the fee to file an amendment. So I ended up needing to pay $35 to file, which is not free despite their name. Very disappointed in their refusal to fix their mistake. I would have happily gone through the trouble of the amendment if they had just met me in the middle and covered the extra cost. I’ll go back to H&R next year. They’ve never messed up, the process is faster, and it ended up being the same price.

Thank you for reaching out to us. When you select to pay our fee with your federal or state refund, you set up a temporary bank account with Civista Bank, a division of the Santa Barbara's TPG group. This bank account information is printed on your federal and state return and e-filed to the IRS and your state along with your direct deposit information.

The IRS and your state will deposit your refund into the temporary bank account (shown on the return), our fees will be extracted, and the remainder will be deposited into the direct deposit account you provided.

If you haven't yet received your refund, please first track your refund's release with the IRS and your state. You can find the IRS refund tracking tool here:

https://www.irs.gov/wheres-my-refund

Once your refund is released from the IRS and/or your state, it will be sent on to TPG to withdraw our fees and issue the refund. Once you see that the IRS or state tax agency has released your refund(s), you may check the status of your refund at this link:

https://taxpayer.sbtpg.com/login

The timing of your refund is in the hands of the IRS or state tax agency. They do not update us with refund delay information or details regarding to changes of your refund amount.

Should you have any questions about your FreeTaxUSA account, we have support agents that would be happy to assist you. Please select the support option shown at the top of your screen within your FreeTaxUSA account and you can reach out to them there.

I e-filed my federal and state taxes

I e-filed my federal and state taxes. Federal went through fine. My state taxes, however, did not. I qualify for a Veteran's property tax credit. In prior years I've filed using HR Block and had to print and mail my taxes because they don't provide e-filing for the state taxes. So this year I did some research and found that freetaxusa.com offered e-filing for state taxes, even with the Veteran's property tax credit.

Every screen was reflecting accurately - $3453 refund - until I signed and submitted my e-file. Suddenly and without any explanation, I now am owed $0 in my state tax refund. The freetaxusa, which wasn't free, made an ERROR on my state taxes by REMOVING my information on their forms. I went back through every page and FOUND their error.

I will now have to amend my state taxes. I'm ABSOLUTELY PISSED. I've never had this problem before. I would highly recommend that you do NOT use freetaxusa.

Gone downhill fast...

Used to be good, but getting bad past couple years. Last year I paid to file state but then it would not allow state to be filed after the fact and advised due to it being the previous 2023 year it had to be mailed in. They already knew this before charging me though! So I contested the scam charge on my credit card. Now this year, they declined my payment and stated bc of "payment issues" last year I could not file state or make payments this year?! I emailed them and they said bc I did a chargeback last year they were charged a fee for that and I'd have to reimburse them to ever make a payment with them again! They scammed me and bc they didn't get away with it they are blocking me?! Wow! Nope.... Will be filing state on the direct state .gov site for FREE from now on. IDK if I technically am doing my taxes twice - I'm never paying these scammy online companies a dime ever again!!!!

Hello! Thanks for taking time to let us know about your experience. We do notify customers on multiple screens, including the initial pages of the process, that e-filing a 2023 prior year return is currently only available to customers with an IP PIN.

Our website charges a fee to prepare your state return. That is, we charge a fee to calculate your tax due/refund and place the correct numbers in the right place on your tax forms. This fee is the same regardless of whether you e-file or mail a paper return.

If you ultimately choose not to file after making payment, we ask that you reach out to our customer support to request a refund instead of initiating a chargeback, which costs us the fee paid plus additional fees.

Hey Colton,

I apologize for any difficulty you had with e-filing your tax return. Since you don't directly send your W-2 form when e-filing, the IRS does require that the EIN be included with your filing. I apologize this was not made clear earlier in the process. If you don't have your original W-2 form in future years, a local tax professional is able to request an un-masked transcript for you to get your EIN for e-filing purposes if needed. Please feel free to contact our support team if you have any other questions about your tax preparation.

Great price and simple to use

I used Turbo Tax for years. Then a couple years ago I wasn't able to import an item I needed as they had a glitch. Told them I was going elsewhere and they said I could not get a refund because I ordered online - so beware. I then went to FreeTaxUSA. No, you cannot import but once you do it the first time they carry over the information except for amounts for current year. The input is simple and a couple time I needed a Pro (cost $44) and worth it. My issue and not the layout. So, no cost for the Federal and the State and Pro and audit protection was around $81. With the other agency I was paying close to $200 for all those services. No regrets about changing. Love FreeTaxUSA. In fact, my sister and niece are also using it with same input as me.

Hey Joe,

I am sorry you ran into issues with your tax payment. I have sent you a request for information if you would like me to look into what happened. Please include the email on your account in your reply. This is very unusual since we cannot change dates for payment in your account.

If you entered a date, it sounds like you selected electronic withdrawal as your payment method. Electronic withdrawal payments are handled directly by the IRS or state-we do not touch any payment funds. The date you give is the earliest they are allowed to pull money from your account. Typically, they will not process your payment until they are done processing your tax return.

If you are now getting late fees and penalties for late payment, you can reach out to the IRS and state and prove that you did give authorization for on time payment and should not be penalized due to their delay. Please reach out to our customer support team from within your account if you have any other questions.

This is my 3rd year using FTU, it's the best!

This is my 3rd year using FTU, and it keeps getting easier and easier. I used to use TurboTax, ugh. I'm so glad I don't have to anymore!

FreeTaxUSA: Gets The Job Done

FreeTaxUSA is a breath of fresh air in the tax-filing world. Its clean, productivity-driven interface keeps you focused and moving without the usual clutter or upsell pressure. Pricing is transparent and upfront, so you always know what you’re paying before you file. Compared to TurboTax and H&R Block, it’s noticeably easier to use, with a smoother, more intuitive flow. The UI is genuinely wonderful—simple, modern, and designed to get you in and out with minimal friction.

Great site, definitely try it out.

I’ve been using this site for a few years, and it’s worked very well for me. The main reason I started using it is that it could handle all of my forms without an additional charge, unlike some other “free” sites. The interface isn’t perfect, but I’ve always been able to find what I need, and I haven’t encountered any technical issues that I can’t get around. I would definitely recommend that anyone who feels they don’t need professional preparation and who wants to save some money try out this site.

So much for paid support

I filed my taxes on the 9th of March. I paid for the extra support. Their idea of extra support is to tell me to call the phone number that I already have. What is support to them. One of mr tax refunds that I paid them extra to double check has now been reduced by 91% by the IRS and the only thing I get from these people is the phone number that I already have. Paying for the extra support is a joke. DON’T PAY FOR ANYTHING EXTRA. It’s not worth it.

Hello, Milissa,

We're sorry to hear you're having issues with receiving your refund. Once your return has been accepted, the processing and timing of your refund is in the hands of the IRS. For security reasons, they will not discuss the processing of your refund with anyone not listed as a taxpayer or spouse on the return, including the tax preparation service you used to file.

We guarantee the accuracy of our calculations based on the information entered. If the IRS made an adjustment, they will mail a letter that explains the adjustment.

If you've contacted support regarding assistance understanding the adjustment and it has been unsatisfactory, we'd like to look into this further. We've sent you a request for more information. Please include your email address when responding to this request and we'd be happy to assist you further.
