Tried to set up online banking after opening a new account. The teller explained it in detail and it should have been an easy process. After over 2 hours and multiple phone calls because no one could provide me the necessary information I finally had online banking set up. Extremely frustrating as a new client. I was not impressed at the disorganization. This bank needs to fix their system.

So my son went into the bank this morning to find out why he was charged $1.25 x 25 and they said for transactions so he asked what transactions and the idiot refused to tell him. Also they changed his account to one that you need a minimum balance of $3000 a month, it doesn't take a genius to see that he doesn't even get $800/month but they decided to change his account WITHOUT HIS CONSENT. I think bmo just hires idiots or scammers to rip off their clients and I think ALL bmos should be shut down and their tellers charged with fraud. What a freakin joke.

They have taken my money hostage!! If I could give this communist bank 0 stars they would get -5. Terrible bank all around. If you have money in there RUN TO GET IT OUT ASAP. This institution lies to you, refuses to fulfill your online transfers, won’t deliver your electronic checks with the excuse, the institution you sent the check to refused it. Can’t get anywhere with customer service that’s if you get to talk to a real person. It feels like I am dealing with a Communist Bank.

Poor service results in losing customer
I have had a BMO account and credit card for over 5 years and with no warning at all and a balance of 60$ on my credit card they went and closed the credit card account on me. I went into the bank and they said I had to call the number on the back of the card as they couldn’t help me. I did that to find out my account was closed Jan 21, 2026. When I asked why no one seemed to be able to answer me. I’ve paid all my bills on time and paid off in full every month. Such poor customer service on their end. I do not recommend anyone using BMO.

I am currently based in the UK and have started receiving emails from BMO regarding a credit card account I never opened. Fearing identity theft, I called their customer service team. Despite receiving multiple emails from BMO to my personal address, the agent 'could not verify' me because I didn’t have the full card number (which I obviously don't have, as I didn't open the account!).
There was zero empathy and zero initiative. No offer to escalate to a fraud specialist, no security department email provided, and no reassurance regarding liability. Instead, the advisor became irate and eventually hung up because I couldn't provide data for an account that isn't mine. To top it off, the only 'solution' offered was to visit a branch in person—despite me explaining repeatedly that I live in the UK. BMO needs to stop hidden behind scripts and start treating potential fraud victims like humans. Utterly incompetent and dismissive.

Absolutely amazing,friendly, and welcoming customer service. Do everything to try and help meet customers with their needs. Fast reliable loyal and trustworthy bank. I recommend BMO to everyone and anyone. The only bank that I will deal with or bring and entice more customers to bring there business to BMO
Relentlessly useless
As a business owner I have had to use a BMO $20k limit credit card , little did I know that BMO would call me relentlessly night and day , on sundays , early as 7 am , over and over sometimes up to 5 times per day just to tell me my account is over due a $125 on a payment .This went on for years, literal harassment. I had my lawyer pay them off in full. I will not be using them again and I will tell everyone about my horrible experience when ever I can. I’d rate them Zero out of a 100 stars.

This is literally the worst bank ever
This is literally the worst bank ever. They reversed a dispute for a FRAUD charge that they ADMITTED was fraud to the point of closing my debit card, then reversed it and told me I was liable to pay the charge. They then closed my bank account when I refused to pay and removed my entire bank history so I no longer have access to bank statements. This bank should be investigated for fraud.
Mortgage
This is one of the worst banks I have ever dealt with. Everything is so complicated, and most of the time, the people you talk to don't realise how stressful they are making things for you. I applied for a skipped payment for my mortgage in December 2025 for January payment, which was approved and I received a confirmation email. But then, in early January, the payment was sent back to the bank. Since 5 January 2026, I have received no fewer than 40 phone calls, 20 emails and several text messages asking for the payment, even though it was approved to be skipped. Now I need to have my skipped payment approved by management, and I still don't know why. It was finally approved, but I had to go to the bank to drop off my T4s, payslips and municipal tax documents. I really don't know why, as they already have this information on file. So, if you're considering switching your mortgage to this bank, think twice — there are better options out there.

I opened a new account to get a welcome offer of $400. It wasn't until eight months later they told me I didn't qualify because I hadn't used my account in time after opening.
Well. The reason I didn't use my account was because I was waiting for a card. The Canada Post strike happened, and it took a month to receive.
So this lady is like "why did it take you a month to use your card?" Uh, because I didn't have it yet. Which was not my fault. The bonus should have been granted.
Bank is going out of business
This bank is in trouble .They are going after small time customers like me .What is 10,000 for such a large bank to track my payment and then reduce my credit limit after I make a payment you know they have no cash .They reduced my credit limit and then sent me a notice that they will be charging me 29 dollars after they are the ones who reduced my credit limit .So not only did a purchase I was trying to make not go through they are anticipating I will pay them an additional 29 dollars because apparently they think everyone is born stupid .Those of you who have accounts with this bank especially any kind of loan accounts check your balances .They reduced my personal line of credit from 25000 to 3000 no advance notice nothing when I asked for an explanation they sent a fake manager asking me to reapply.They are so tone deaf they think they can treat people like trash and still keep them as customers.Am walking while I still can patronize this ROGUE bank at your own peril.

Awful services. I am getting all my money out and switching to TD. Why is there such a low limit on debit card expenditure? Why do I need permission from BMO everytime to spend my money in the name of "fraud prevention"? If that's the case what's the use for multi-factor verification? Worst of all, the call support is classless. Impatient, condescending and NOT-CANADIAN (this is a huge issue as the communication was often very unpleasant and the practice of mass outsourcing deprives local communities of their livelihood for corporate greed)!!!
Unnecessarily Complicated and Frustrating
I’ve had a BMO current account for over a year with no issues, yet suddenly I’m required to visit a branch to verify my account. This process is confusing, time-consuming, and entirely unnecessary.
It’s hard to see how this qualifies as “professionalism” when something that should be simple is made so complicated. What should be a quick, straightforward experience has become a major hassle.
For a bank I’ve trusted for over a year, this was a disappointing and frustrating experience. Customer service should simplify life, not make it harder.
Finally one sane person solved my issues.
After receiving notification that I could not access my account due to all of my contact details being changed, I spent over three frustrating hours bouncing back and forth between 1-800-BMO and my BMO branch, like a ping pong ball numerous times. Finally late for work, and seeing a branch teller for the 5th time, my issues were finally solved by Irram! This good review is strictly my special thanks to Irram!
