hey! i read your post about commission payment delays, and honestly i think you should expose clients who refuse to pay or keep dodging artists. it would really help protect the community and warn other artists. especially smaller ones who can’t afford to get burned.

obviously only if you feel safe doing so, but i really think it matters. thank you for speaking up regardless

Hey Anon!!! First of all, thank you for taking the time to say this so thoughtfully!!! I genuinely get where you’re coming from, and you’re not wrong to be worried about artists getting burned, especially smaller ones who can’t afford to lose time, energy, or money! Non-payment is a real issue, and it does hurt people.

On one side, I absolutely agree with you: clients who dodge payment, stall endlessly, or straight-up vanish cause real harm, and there is a lack of accountability in creative spaces sometimes. It’s exhausting, demoralizing, and it happens far too often. Artists deserve to be paid for their labor, full stop!

But on the other side… it’s complicated.

Public callouts can very quickly turn into witch hunts, pile-ons, or misinformation spirals, even when the original intent is protection. Not every situation is as clean-cut as “evil client refuses to pay,” and once names are out there, you can’t really control where that goes or how it escalates.

Also, not all non-payment situations look the same, and lumping them together can get messy. There are many types of situations and their clients. For example:

  • There’s The Ghost: completely disappears. Leaves no trace. Might as well be vapor.
  • There’s The Schrödinger Client: online everywhere except in your DMs. Somehow still posting, liking, breathing, but refuses to pay.
  • There’s The Houdini: vanishes right after you finish the work, but miraculously reappears weeks later with “oh hey, remember me?”
  • There’s The Eternal Negotiator: constantly haggling, changing terms mid-process, like you’re bargaining for a dragon’s hoard instead of a sketch.
  • There’s The NFT Excuse: claims “I only have crypto” or some weird payment method that’s either fake or impossible, and then disappears.
  • There’s The Emotional Rollercoaster: apologies, sob stories, guilt-trips, self-blame… but no actual money. Bonus points if they make you feel like a villain for asking. Even though they may even have commissioned someone else in the meantime and paid them.
  • There’s The Two-Week-Project Projector: commissions a project that was promised in two weeks… and then casually stretches it into months while posting sneak peeks of your work elsewhere.
  • There’s The Mysterious Vanishing Act: active everywhere except where they’re supposed to pay you. Blocks, unblocks, disappears, reappears. Like a glitch in reality.
  • There’s The “I Thought It Was Free”: insists that the work should be gifted or donated… despite explicit agreements.
  • And then, rarely, there are cases where something genuinely happened (emergencies, financial crashes, etc.), and the line between malice and circumstance isn’t always obvious from the outside.

That doesn’t excuse non-payment, but it does mean that public exposure isn’t always the safest or fairest tool, especially when you’re an individual artist without legal backing. For a lot of us, naming names can invite harassment, retaliation, or legal threats we simply don’t have the bandwidth to deal with. Especially since “cliques” can be created and make things worse than they are.

Also, I want to be clear about something: I don’t mind delays. Life is chaotic, and I get that. Hell, I’m the first one to say “hey, things are a bit wild on my side, there might be a delay” when needed!!! Communication goes a long way. If someone talks to me, we can always figure things out!!

Personally, I think the most sustainable way to protect artists is:

  • Encouraging contracts, deposits, and clear boundaries
  • Sharing advice, resources, and support with each other
  • And normalizing saying “no” or walking away sooner

Honestly, part of my hesitation is also just… the state of some art spaces already. Certain platforms (looking at Twitter, TikTok, etc.) are already incredibly hostile, reactive, and quick to dogpile. The last thing we need is to add more fuel to environments that thrive on outrage, half-context, and public shaming as entertainment.

I’ve seen too many situations where a valid concern turns into a spectacle, and suddenly it’s not about protecting artists anymore tbh, it’s about who can yell the loudest, who gets dragged the hardest, and who becomes the next target. That doesn’t actually make the community safer, it just makes it scarier to exist in and NO ONE wants that.

I’d rather focus on sharing knowledge, warning signs, and tools that help artists protect themselves without turning every issue into a public execution. We don’t need to recreate courtroom drama on platforms that already reward cruelty and chaos.

Anon I hear you, and I really appreciate the care behind your message!! I just try to balance community safety with not unleashing something that can hurt the wrong people (including myself). Speaking up about the issue matters a lot, even if the solution isn’t always public exposure.

[Update #2 — Commission Terms Adjustment: Payment - 12/12/2025]

Hello everyone! Quick and important update from your local French artist who is currently powered by tea, deadlines, and the stubborn refusal to give up.

I usually accept half upfront or full payment at the end both are still completely fine, I really don’t mind! I understand that life happens, banks have tantrums, and sometimes your paycheck decides to vanish like a Skyrim NPC.

However, what is not okay is disappearing for a long time and using the artwork before paying and… just ghosting me while sharing it everywhere.

Please don’t do that. I am an artist, not the free samples aisle at Cotsco.

So from now on, once I send your finished commission, there will be a 7-day payment window for the people chosing to pay full-price at the moment of receiving the commission.

Seven days. Enough time to breathe, snack, fight your bank app, win, and then pay like a normal functioning adult.

And to be very clear:
I do not believe in naming or shaming clients publicly. I won’t post your username, I won’t tag you, I won’t make a list and tape it to the community fridge.

That kind of drama doesn’t help anyone.

But, and this is important, if someone repeatedly ignores messages, declines to communicate, or uses art they haven’t paid for, I will add them to a private list I already have in my files and I will not work with them again in the future.

And if you keep the art up without paying? You will receive a DMCA.

With love. And speed. And for anyone who doesn’t know what a DMCA is: It’s basically the internet’s equivalent of me slapping your hand with a rolled-up newspaper and yelling, “NO. BAD.” …but legally.

A DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act takedown) is a very serious adult form that says: “Hello, this clown stole my art,” and then the website goes, “OH WORD??”

And then yeets your post into the sun without even asking questions.

This is not punishment. And I do not enjoy sending this to people. But this is me doing some basic boundary-setting IF you chose to refuse to pay. It protects my time, my work, my workload, and the three remaining brain cells powering this operation so I can keep creating for the people who do respect the process.

If you genuinely have issues and need longer, that’s totally fine!! Just tell me. I am not a monster. I get that life falls apart sometimes (you should see my life since like JUNE lmao-), banks explode, your cat eats your debit card, whatever.

Communication solves 99% of problems. I do that too when life is kicking me in the teeth.

I love working with you all, and your support genuinely means the world. Thank you for respecting my work, my time, and the effort behind every piece I make!!💖

Stay hydrated, be kind, and for the love of art… don’t be THAT kind of weird!!

🦴 𝕭𝖗𝖊𝖆𝖐𝖎𝖓𝖌 𝕹𝖊𝖜𝖘 𝖋𝖗𝖔𝖒 𝖙𝖍𝖊 𝕮𝖗𝖞𝖕𝖙 🦴

MY EXAM.
GOT.
CANCELLED.
TODAY.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Which means I didn’t ascend into a stress-induced astral projection this afternoon and I am officially ALIVE. Temporarily. (Also new banner hi-)

Naturally, I am using this stolen time like a responsible little ghoul:
✨ ADVANCING COMMISSIONS ✨

I’m sending THREE finished watercolor portraits tonight, because when the reaper gives you unexpected free time, you simply paint harder!

So if you’re waiting on a reply / update / spooky little WIP, IT IS COMING. I have been released from one cursed obligation and redirected straight into my natural habitat: hunched over a perfect watercolor paper like a Victorian goblin.

Anyway.
Bless this cancellation.
Fear this productivity.
Love you.

A Little Commission PSA!

Hey besties!! Just a few friendly notes for anyone planning to commission me!!! The previous pinned commission post will no longer be effective, starting today.

A./ For spicy / +18 art requests: please remember that I ONLY take those from people who are 18 or older. I won’t be making any exceptions, no matter how cool your idea is! Please be respectful about that, safety and boundaries first!

B./ If you need your piece done extra fast, please TELL ME beforehand! I’m a student with ADHD and a pretty full schedule, so I have to plan things carefully. Rush work is totally possible, I just need to know in advance so I can make it happen without burning out-

C./ References are your best friend. The more you can give me (especially if your character is from a fandom I don’t know), the easier it’ll be for me to capture them right! Moodboards, poses, outfit ideas, color palettes—everything helps!!

I promise to always communicate about timelines, progress, and any delays that might come up. Life happens, but I’ll always keep you in the loop!

And of course, thank you so much for your support and trust 🥹💛 commissions keep me going (and help me afford soup, coffee, and art supplies).

Let’s make cool things together!!!!

🚫Quick Update on My Art Usage:🚫

(aka: I cannot believe I have to say this in the Year of Our Chaotic Lord 2025)

Tiny housekeeping moment 💖

Just a reminder that reposting my artworks (patreon’s work included) anywhere—Discord, Pinterest, Tumblr, Instagram, your cousin’s paranormal cryptid forum etc—WITHOUT my permission is a big fat no. Nope. Non. Nein. Nuh-uh. Don’t do it.

Now, why am I writing this? Because apparently some people have the shameless confidence of a raccoon who broke into a bakery and are out here reposting works like it’s free samples at Costco (derogatory).

I don’t care what’s your bullshit excuse, it does not work on me.

Just because you can right-click something doesn’t mean you suddenly own it. This is not a medieval RPG where you loot everything not nailed down.

If you want to share my art:
Ask. Literally just ask.
I promise I don’t bite unless you repost without permission, then I absolutely will bite.

Moral of the story: Don’t steal from artists. Don’t repost without consent. Don’t make me turn into an Elden Ring boss because you couldn’t resist the ✨shiny picture✨.

Hey Mëlhyan! I just saw your new commission sheet and honestly, your prices feel way too low for the quality you’re putting out. Your work is absolutely gorgeous and I’ve seen people charging more for art that’s nowhere near your level. Of course, you know what’s best for your own setup, but I really hope you’re valuing your time and skill properly!! Just wanted to say that your art deserves more recognition (and compensation!).

Good luck with your commissions!!!<3

Asked by Anonymous

Aww thank you so much, that’s honestly really kind of you to say!🖤🖤🖤 It means a lot that you took the time to send this, Anon!!! I promise I am valuing my time, I just have my own little system for it haha- XD

I totally get what you mean though! Some artists charge more, some less, and honestly? To each their own!!

It’s never my place or right to criticize how someone prices their own work. Everyone’s situation, goals, and audience are different, and what feels fair or sustainable for one person might not work at all for another. Pricing art is honestly such a weird mix of time, effort, confidence, and context that it’s impossible to compare directly.

For me, I prefer keeping things on the more accessible side for now — partly because I know times are rough and art isn’t always a top priority purchase for most people (as much as we artists wish it could be 😅), and partly because I really like staying active and making pieces that more folks can enjoy. I also tend to do random gifts, memes, and smaller things just for fun and free, so it balances out a bit!

I know some of my more detailed or complex pieces might look like they “should” cost more ( and you’re absolutely right that they take time and love) but for now, this setup feels like the best middle ground between keeping my art reachable and valuing my time. I’ll definitely adjust prices as things evolve, but I just want everyone to feel like they can safely approach commissions without breaking the bank!!!🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤

That said, I’m definitely planning on adding more complex options in the future!! Bigger, detailed illustrations, themed bundles, maybe even some special prints for patreons, more coloring pages, coloring pages bundles etc!! And I’ll adjust prices accordingly when I get there.

For now, this setup feels right for where I’m at, and hearing that people think it’s fair (or even too low!) really motivates me to keep growing. Thank you again for the kind words and the support, seriously!! Hope you’re having a great day Anon, and thank you so much for the support!!🖤
