i’ll go first: coffee shop aus
i know, i know they’re popular, i know they’re often masterclasses in characterization and storytelling. i understand this is a personal issue.
but seriously, i’ve tried reading them for multiple fandoms and every time it feels like that first bite of a burrito where it’s all tortilla and you’re waiting for the filling but then the whole thing turns out to be tortilla. why is nothing happening. why are they in a coffee shop. why am i reading about a coffee shop i already know what those are like where did all the magic go why did you send the story back into the reality from which i was trying to escape what happened to make you so cruel aaaaaaaaaa
anyway i’m curious what tropes bother other people! (also happy to argue about the coffee shops but i will warn you the stakes are low, i am irrational, and i will approach that argument with roughly the amount of good faith ben shapiro brings to unmediated debates with college freshmen)
i hate phone call and i hate online i spent 3 days unsuccessfully trying to set up a physical therapy appointment, gave up and just drove to the nearest sports medicine facility and was immediately given an appointment by an extremely helpful desk lady who also made sure they took my insurance and fixed several errors in my file in the space of about five minutes

what even is the idea with dnd as a wide scale storytelling medium. hello The Internet we’ve created characters with incredibly specific attributes and skills that are very important. we will now go out of our way to leave the ultimate impact of all these character traits up to chance at critical moments of the story. yes all of them. if anything even remotely important is about to happen you best believe we’ll be whipping out The Randomizer so as to prevent any intentional narratives from getting in there
dice rolls in a private game with friends: adds excitement to combat, lets you ‘use’ your character’s weighted stats in a tangible way, keeps everything structured enough to smooth over minor disagreements between players
dice rolls in a highly produced, professional podcast format: ok so like 80% of the outcome of that major plot point was provably meaningless
though it is far from my biggest issue atm i fear i am going to be chasing the dragon ‘the way food tasted right after i woke up from emergency surgery’ for weeks

i kinda love murderbot’s take on ‘robot voice’. it neither falls back on the typical genre convention monotone thing nor does it fully imitate modern voice software, but it manages to sound distinctly Off anyway, pretty much through cadence alone
you hear murderbot talk and it’s just ‘yeah that’s pretty much how it would sound if a computer with a human voice box learned tone modulation by watching 7000+ hours of campy tv serials’
hanahaki is such a fraught trope for me because on the one hand i am 100% on board with the idea of characters angstily hacking up blood-soaked flowers but on the other hand i hate love,
