You know how they say not to judge a book by its cover? Well, this book is as pretty on the inside as it is on the outside! I absolutely adore it to pieces! It has taken its rightful place on my bookshelf alongside my first copy and other related books! And for fellow crow brained individuals who love pretty shiny things like myself, you should definitely keep an eye on June for the upcoming hilarious pirate novel “Running Close to the Wind” by the same fabulous author Alexandra Rowland! As they say, pirates always have a few pretty shiny things. 😉 Read an excerpt of it below!
it’s charming that in every mxtx novel most of the supporting cast are haters who do NOT want the main couple to get together. they are not scheming to matchmake them they are begging them on their hands and knees saying pleeeeaaase block his number. and they’re right to do it
they treat the happy ending with grim resignation and it’s funny every time
[mxtx supporting character voice] I HOPE JAKEY DIES
actually you know what that's exactly it i would rather someone add 5 parantheticals after every sentence than use tone indicators it's 1. accomplishing SO much more in terms of clarity 2. extremely funny to look at depending on how they're used
observe:
"is this real? /gen" — i thought /gen meant "general" for ages. i would not be able to understand this on first sight a few years ago and is thus ineffective
"is this real? (genuine question)" — i fully understand this without issue
"is this real? (genuine question) (can't tell) (very realistic) (looks real) (scary) (photoshop?)" — is not only incredibly clear it's also very funny to read all of these thoughts stapled together while also in their own parentheses. it's also the most useful because now i can actually address all parts of what they are asking me with as much specificity as BOTH of us need
parentheses my beloved (they are for bonus thoughts) (and questions) ( and sidetracks) (like a 2nd conversation on top of the first)
They're like tags on tumblr (like how we add comments in tags) (when it's something not important enough to add in the main reblog) (but it still informs the context of the reblog) (why haven't we been using parentheses more)
We talk a lot about "if you're sick stay home from work" but I feel like we also have a lot more control over "If you're sick stay away from that social function."
If you're sick, stay away from that social function.
If you're almost sick, and going to this social function is going to wear you out and probably push you over the line into actually sick, you should probably stay away from that social function and get some rest.
If your kids are sick, don't drag them to the function. Stay home. Put a funny movie on. We do not need to perpetuate this culture. We do not need to have our kid's cold turn into Grandma's pneumonia just to keep up appearances. We do not need to have our kid's cold turn into 20 other kids' colds just to participate in a craft at the library that you could easily replicate at home by googling for 2 seconds.
people getting mad at ao3 for rightfully being firmly against censorship and allowing dark fics that depict taboo subjects in explicit details to be on their platform is so funny to me because ao3 was created specifically to be a fuck you to capitalism and censorship. the point of ao3 is that it’s a place to host and archive any fanwork, which includes fanwork about taboo topics that are not allowed on other platforms like wattpad or fanfiction.net
the whole point of ao3 is that it’s a safe space for all fics, and that includes fics about taboo subjects
ao3 has always been firmly against censorship since the day it was created, that’s why it’s run by fans, for fans, on fans’ donations, why it’s a nonprofit organization, that’s also why it has no ads or algorithms or any of those capitalism bullshit
if you have a problem with that, go to fanfiction.net or wattpad. no one forces you to stay in the house made specifically for the (affectionate) freaks
ur future nurse is using chapgpt to glide thru school u better take care of urself
Yep. This is terrifying. I’ve caught nursing majors, engineering majors, architecture majors relying on ChatGPT to do their homework. These are people who need to know their field well to ensure people don’t die and they’re letting a glorified algorithm cheat them through school. It’s so dangerous
hey. hi. I work in academia. and there are a lot of student-age folks on this site.
don't do this. don't use genAI. even if your professors give you permission. even if they ask for it or suggest it. if they do anything short of directly requiring it (and I weep, because I've already seen assignments that require it) don't touch that crap. if they do require it, stick it to them. be as maliciously compliant as possible. be a nightmare.
I know it might sound easier right now -- just plug in your assignment and get the answers. you don't care about this class anyway, it's not for your major, you don't see the value of the assignment.
but for your own sake, for the sake of your education and mind, and for the sake of the future world we want to have: learn the stuff. you are not as stupid as the corporate bizzaro kings who want to rule the world think you are, so don't give them reasons to believe it.
and odds are good genAI is gonna give you corrupted info anyway -- more and moreso as the machines cannibalize themselves.
just don't do it. not even "I just do it for XYZ--" no. stop. there is no valid use of generative AI, and even using it for memes or lolz feeds the system and directly feeds the pockets of the people who want to replace you anyway.
Rage reblogging this. Yesterday i got into an argument with one of my college friends who is using chatGPT to do all her work. We're psychology students. The whole group chat laughed my arguments off as if they didn't matter because "she's an artist, of course she's anti-AI" and i had to deal with it. This is a warning. If your therapist graduated in 2023/2024, ask about their opinions on chatGPT. They might lie to you if you ask "did you use it to graduate" directly, but try to make jokes about it and play it cool. If they're into it, DROP OFF. FIND A NEW ONE. Do not trust your brain to someone who didn't bother to use theirs.
So rereading a book within the same few months isn’t really something I do. Audiobooks aren’t really something I do.
As soon as I finished Running Close to the Wind I turned right around to start it again. And then once that was finished, immediately turned around again to listen to the audio book.
That is not something I do
I said it in an earlier post, but I’m on my 4th or so read of the year- and something like my 8th or 9th overall since it came out last June because it caught me so well
It’s just such a delightful little romp with such amazing characters, and it’s funny and heartfelt and just so fun you guys
Teveri’s logs are such fun little bits at the end of the chapters, and Several of their scenes made me cry. Avra is an absolute gremlin in the best possible way and also made me cry. Julian is Very good at interrogating Avra and also his rant made me fall a little bit in love. Cat is Cat and thus he is perfect. The cake competition is loud and colorful and lovely and INCREDIBLY fun
I could say about as much as every other character or scene, but we’d be here all day and possibly pass the character limit
The paperback comes out on June 17th in the US and August 7th in the UK, and the hardback (US cover, UK cover), e-book, and audio books are all out now. It would also be an awesome addition to any library’s collection!
I would absolutely recommend checking it out if you haven’t already- I’m absolutely sure you’ll love it, especially if you like pirates
this website’s easy watch. *dangles a bunch of greek gods like keys*
Keep in mind I only know like. Two Greek gods by name. Homer is one of them, and he was good friends with Odysseus I think?
Wait fuck Homer isn’t a god he wrote the fucking thing. Fuck
POST CANCELLED NO ONE LOOK
You're failing.
You don’t think I know that, God of Death? Can I pray to you so I can DIE ALREADY
Short version is that Pluto is a later name for the god of death, which is often associated with the Roman era/Roman mythology. Hades is the earlier name.
I set up my own house made of sticks and it has promptly fallen on me
I made this post thinking I knew what kind of fire I was playing with. Hephaestus, God of Fire, looking upon me from his fuck off tower or whatever said “Oh you think you know? Check this shit” and promptly set my post ablaze for everyone to observe
Hephaestus doesn't have a tower, he lived in a volcano
FINE THEN. BIG FUCK OFF VOLCANO. WHATEVER
Achievement Unlocked:
Lightning Bait
You're basically doing the post equivalent of standing out in a field during a storm with a ten-foot copper pole, you better hope Zeus is busy hiding from Hera.
FUCK'S SAKE NOT AGAIN
I need you to name every greek God you know and what they are for plz
For science
OKAY FINE HERE'S WHAT I'VE FOUND
- HERMES: DA FUNNY ONE
- ZEUS: DA LIGHTNING (NOTE: THOUGHT HE WAS NORDIC, FATHER OF THOR)
- POSEIDON: DA SEA ONE
- HEPHAESTUS: DA FIRE/FORGING/STEEL ONE
- APHRODITE: DA HOT ONE
- KRATOS: GOD OF WAR
- HADES: DA HELL ONE. ROGUE LIKE
- APOLLO: DA DODGEBALL/PROPHECY ONE
ares is the god of war, not kratos
WHY THE FUCK DOES THE GAME CALL HIM GOD OF WAR THEN
I can't believe this post is less than 24 hours old, it feels like something out of classic tumblr lore
