This novel was my first Stephen King book. It will probably also be my last. I did not love it, I did not hate it. It was just there.
I picked up “11/22/63” because the premise was intriguing. However, most of this long book has very little to do with the events of that day. Instead, King focuses on the day-to-day life of the novel’s time traveling protagonist, which is a fine choice if the writer makes it worthwhile and has a point. Really, this text is just a glorified romance with the Kennedy assassination as a backdrop.
Some items I did not care for-the length and the mundane subplots (they are not even that really) that the novel devotes inexplicable amounts of time to. First, the length, this 842-page book could have been 300 pages shorter (easily) and lost nothing for that editing. If there was an editor on this project, I saw no evidence of them. Number one leads to number two, as there are the pointless subplots that go on and on to no point. An example is the town follies the protagonist writes and directs during his time traveling 1960s life. I mean this trite item gets tons of attention, and keeps resurfacing. Another example you ask. Did any reader pick up this book to hear about a high school teacher directing “Of Mice and Men” for the high school drama performance, which of course made all the football players in the show cry. Come on! Not with a title like “11/22/63”, they did not. There were times reading this book where it was almost as bad as young adult romance fiction. There were moments in the text where couples kissed and people applauded. Literally, that happens in this book.
The 40 or so pages devoted to the Kennedy assassination are actually exciting and somewhat gripping. The idea of not being able to successfully change the past is also intriguing. Alas, neither is a focus of this text.
A plus, despite its length it did not take me long to read.
Although I have no desire to ever pick it up again.

Hmmm. I liked your review. I haven’t read this book...too long for me! If you decide to read another SK, I recommend Shawshank Redemption. His earlier horror is good, too.

Interesting review, Brian. I read all of King's earlier books, but I finally gave up when his horror/ suspense novels began to pall for me. I think I'll pass on this one too!
I love the film of Shawshank. Might have to check that out. Thanks!Kelli wrote: "Hmmm. I liked your review. I haven’t read this book...too long for me! If you decide to read another SK, I recommend Shawshank Redemption. His earlier horror is good, too."
It seems that way sir! :)J. Bryce wrote: "Good review. King has needed a serious editor for at least 30 years!"
I am not a fan of the horror genre in general, although I have heard his earlier stuff is quite good.Barbara wrote: "Interesting review, Brian. I read all of King's earlier books, but I finally gave up when his horror/ suspense novels began to pall for me. I think I'll pass on this one too!"
Thanks sir, and no worries.I don't have to like a book for it to be good...to someone.
Have a good day!

Wow Brian, nice, detailed review! I added this to my TBR I guess, having no idea how long it was. Stephen King has been around for a long time and it would be my first read also of this author. I think now that I will skip it. I was not really all that enthused about it but the title intrigued me. Thanks again for the review! :-)
Brian, I have never read a Stephen King book either. My elder daughter, an avid reader, keeps trying to convince me that I should try at least one, but I have resisted to date. Because of my interest in the JFK assassination (I was in my 20’s at the time), I have been tempted to read 11/22/63. Your review kicks one more book off my ever-growing TBR list. Thank you.
I appreciate your words. Too kind.Starjustin wrote: "Wow Brian, nice, detailed review! I added this to my TBR I guess, having no idea how long it was. Stephen King has been around for a long time and it would be my first read also of this author. I t..."

I’m not a huge King lover but I think you chose the wrong book, perhaps - he does have several that are quite interesting, hard to put down, etc.
Hi Sarah, would you mind giving me a couple of recommendations please. I am definitely not a horror fan, and barely dabble in fantasy. I look forward to your comments.
I am really not into horror, so never picked him up before. But I am sure he has some good stuff.Sarah wrote: "I’m not a huge King lover but I think you chose the wrong book, perhaps - he does have several that are quite interesting, hard to put down, etc."
King's On Writing might hold your interest. It enhanced my perspective, which was already tainted by the public library version of the King phenom. Poor bindings, high initial demand, many, many overdues and never returns.https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
A coworker of mine said the same thing. Two recs now, I will have to check it out. Thanks!

One of his best novels Shawshank Redemption, which was made into a movie, is my all time favorite movies....I admit to not having read the book, which will do though, as I do enjoy some of his writings, not the horror stories.....

I agree- this one was a tedious read- but I liked it wasn’t as “supernatural” as some of his others. Once you get over the time traveling freezer....Try his Mr. Mercedes series- the trilogy is very good! I also like Doctor Sleep, the sequel to The Shining - long but good.

Great review! Don't give up on SK just stick to books written before 1995. Anything after is overly long.
I appreciate the kind words, and I will take your advice. Pre-1995!Erin wrote: "Great review! Don't give up on SK just stick to books written before 1995. Anything after is overly long."
Could not agree more with this review... this was my first exposure to SK hoping #2 is better...any recommendations to change my mind on him would be appreciated :)
Thanks Ashley. Unfortunately I have no recommendations for other Mr. King. After this read, I moved on.Ashley wrote: "Could not agree more with this review... this was my first exposure to SK hoping #2 is better...any recommendations to change my mind on him would be appreciated :)"
I am close to being the same way...but thought if there was just one that I HAD to read.Brian wrote: "Thanks Ashley. Unfortunately I have no recommendations for other Mr. King. After this read, I moved on.

His earlier books such as Carrie, Salem's Lot and The Stand are much better. I agree that this one is waaaay too long.
I've heard that from a few people Mike, but at least for the foreseeable future I doubt I will be picking them up. Too much on my "to read" pile as it is. :)Mike wrote: "His earlier books such as Carrie, Salem's Lot and The Stand are much better. I agree that this one is waaaay too long."

So true !!"
A Stephen King book that could easily have 300 pages cut? Yes you better stop now. The Dead Zone and The Stand are pretty much all worth reading by him.
Richard, others have told me those are good as well. Don't know if I will read him again, but if I do, thanks for the recs.Richard S wrote: "A Stephen King book that could easily have 300 pages cut? Yes you better stop now. The Dead Zone and The Stand are pretty much all worth reading by him."
Great review. But if you thought this Stephen King book was long-winded with non-existent editing I dare you to read IT or his Dark Tower series. Holy shit.
I will NOT be doing that, Nick! :)Nick wrote: "Great review. But if you thought this Stephen King book was long-winded with non-existent editing I dare you to read IT or his Dark Tower series. Holy shit."
I feel the exact same way as you, I went into this book thinking it’s a time travel story involving the jfk assassination, it is but only like the last 20% of the books. It started off well up until the point he arrived in Jodie and then it just becomes this slow and boring romance book and detailing living in the past. I’ve read IT and I loved that book even if it does over detail some stuff I’m fine with that. I went into this book not expecting some slow paced romance novel so when 60% of the book is just that I was really disappointed.
Yep! Not all that interesting, Greyson. I feel ya!Greyson wrote: "I feel the exact same way as you, I went into this book thinking it’s a time travel story involving the jfk assassination, it is but only like the last 20% of the books. It started off well up unti..."
It's the only King book I've ever read, Amy. Not really into horror.Amy wrote: "This is the only Stephen King book I have every truly enjoyed. It was so well done and not creepy!"
My thoughts exactly. Way too many side quests in this book. And the length of those “subplots” were a novel’s worth in length. Had no reason to be.
Absolutely, Sakif!Sakif wrote: "My thoughts exactly. Way too many side quests in this book. And the length of those “subplots” were a novel’s worth in length. Had no reason to be."
