1. a) i) Name the TWO main rodent pests in UK flour mills and describe
briefly THREE types of potential damage they may cause. (4 marks)
ii) Describe briefly THREE ways to prevent rodent infestation
in a flour mill. (3 marks)
b) Describe in detail the larval stage in the life cycle of an insect. (3 marks)
c) Outline the main characteristics of mites. (2 marks)

2. a) List THREE legal requirements which necessitate a high standard


of hygiene in the UK flour milling industry. (3 marks)
b) Describe briefly the FIVE elements to be considered when developing
a mill cleaning schedule. (5 marks)
c) State FOUR examples of how safety information is communicated
in a written format to employees, visitors and contractors. (4 marks)

3. a) Outline FOUR precautions which may be taken to ensure dust control


systems operate effectively. (4 marks)
b) Explain the term “explosive atmosphere” in relation to milling. (1 mark)
c) List SEVEN factors to be determined in an assessment made under
the UK’s Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations. (7 marks)

4. a) i) List the FOUR types of hazard categories associated with


moving machinery. (4 marks)
ii) For EACH type, give an example of the machinery which may be
involved and the type of injury which may be sustained. (4 marks)
b) i) List THREE characteristics of electricity which make it one of the
most dangerous hazards encountered at work. (3 marks)
ii) Describe briefly ONE type of injury which can be caused by electricity. (1 mark)

c) Describe briefly FIVE precautions that should be taken whenever
maintenance work is being organised. (5 marks)

8. a) Under the UK’s Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 state:
i) ONE duty of manufacturers and suppliers;
ii) THREE duties of employers;
iii) FOUR powers of enforcement available to Factory Inspectors. (8 marks)
b) Describe briefly THREE criteria that should be considered when
preparing a “suitable and sufficient” risk assessment under the
Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations. (3 marks)
c) Give TWO examples of a “confined space” commonly found in
a flour mill. (1 mark)
