Sam, wake up! Dad was here. Look what he brought.
Maybe something good came from us being together. (x)

The second time I died was so much different than the first. It was amazing. The feeling that washed over me, I... I can't begin to describe it. And suddenly, it came to me what life is all about. Joy. Hope. Forgiveness. Wonder. Friendship. Family. — Superman and Lois 4x10 "It Went by So Fast"
Imagine Arthur had a letter prepared for Merlin before every battle, excursion, and adventure, thinking that trip might be his final trip, and he knows he'll do whatever he can to make sure Merlin survives.
And even after years of still coming back out of these dangerous situations alive, and having so many letters that have never fulfilled their purpose, he can't find it in himself to stop, cause there's always the chance that one of these days might be his last day.
The letters began as apologies to Merlin for how he treated him, how he was forever grateful that Merlin stayed by his side, and it would include a note with his signature and sigil that had a stipend of gold for Merlin to have; so it sort of turns into a will, specifically for Merlin, but was mostly still a letter. Arthur, although always conscious of the fact Merlin was just a servant, still felt guilty, distressed, and downright miserable of the idea of Merlin receiving nothing if Arthur were to be killed.
So the bequests (a gift of personal property that someone leaves to you in their will when they die, had to look up the name, cuz saying "gift" did not feel right) start to evolve, so to speak. First it was gold, then it was a permanent place in the household (removed after several times of Merlin saying he would never serve anyone else), after he became King, he added Merlin becoming an official part of the council, then it was his mother's sigil (also removed after he had actually given Merlin the sigil), his mother's estate and any other estates Arthur had, his own ring (removed when/if he married Gwen), and so on.
The first person he told about these letters was Leon, then Gaius, maybe Gwen and possibly other knights of the round table.
So, when the final battle happened, and Arthur had passed, at least 2-3 people knew about the stacks of letters the King had for his manservant. But once Merlin brought Arthur to the Lake of Avalon, he never went back to Camelot. And unfortunately, Merlin also had some letters he had left Arthur, only Gaius knowing of them.
And it could be an even more bittersweet ending if you want to imagine Merlin starting several journals with entries made for Arthur, but also for himself, so he doesn't forget anything, or if Leon did turn out to be immortal and the absolute relief and joy he feels after finding Merlin, and tells him about the letters; maybe he carried the unsent letters of his friends for all these years, and now, one side of them can now be sent and received, even if whatever Arthur wanted to leave Merlin is no longer around or existing. But it wouldn't even matter, because all Merlin wanted for Arthur to stay alive, and now all he wants is for him to come back.

Lord of the Rings Cast + Goodbye
You know, I like to think that this wasn’t JUST the attitudes and passion of the crew, but also a side effect of working so long within a story that radiates the value of friendship and comaraderie in difficult times. I like to think that soaking in those values within a good work setting that also cared about and valued those messages helped lead to these, some of the most heartfelt emotions I’ve ever seen related to the cast and crew of a movie or show.
i know i’m very, very late with this but jabel comparing midam to wandavision makes me insane. jabel saying that a midam spinoff would be like early episodes wandavision makes me INSANE and i say that as someone who doesn’t even like wandavision.
like. a cute run-of-the-mill domestic sitcom of michael the homemaker and his doctor husband adam. a whole life, a whole existence created solely as a consequence of michael’s neverending grief at losing adam. losing his chance of ever having a cute domestic life with adam where every day brings with it the challenges of living and being alive. and slowly more characters emerge into this life: his siblings come back, and he makes amends with them; they make friends; they have kids. and none of it is real. because they’re gone, or they never existed in the first place, and that nothing and never is all michael has left.
and grief lets love persist. grief allows love to persist. and grief lets love create a life that never was, and could never be.
and I’ll ruin it all over I’ll ruin it for you.
