What other insane long posts about MCR should I make today. Oh uhhh Cubicles as a song is slightly off-putting and a black sheep within the band’s discography not because of the songwriting but because of the vocal performance & if you imagine it as a Full Collapse era Thursday song (aka performed with almost painful earnestness instead of Gerard’s vengeful 2002 era growly head voice) it snaps into place in a completely different way 👍
I’m not even saying this was a direct influence or intentional thing btw—I think a handful of other vocalists from that era also had some of that earnestness but Full Collapse is sort of unique in the subject matter/earnestness intentional contrast. So as a fun exercise if you mentally swap the way the “I don’t know”s in Wind Up are delivered with how the “Die Alone”s in Cubicles are delivered you get wildly different effects across the board. This song really made me realize just how much anger and irony is baked into Gerard’s vocal TONE. Like yeah some of that is performance but I think he also comes by it honestly which is why moments like Early Sunsets are so crazy since the raggedness breaks through that veneer. And it’s also why he’s good at crazy victorious sounding rock ballads with angry-sounding bridges. 👍 Yay

SKRATCH: I heard that the short stories of Jonathan Lethem made their way into your lyrics. GEOFF: It's a short story called "The Dystopianist". (It has a much longer title but I'll call it that for brevity's sake.) The idea was a sort of Vonnegut-style writer sitting down thinking about how good he is and how his rival is actually so much better than him. And while he's thinking all these petty thoughts, one of his characters shows up at his door and says, "I know you're a writer and all, but why'd you have to make me a suicidal sheep? Being a suicidal sheep sort of sucks—and you did this to me." I have [the] same sentiment about love songs. All these people who write love songs so casually don't understand the weight behind them. They're actually much more petty than love is. I wanted to take that idea of a love songwriter who wrote all these songs but who was shy and didn't play them for anyone. And at the end, all the characters falling in and out of love, having all this misfortune happen to them, they show up and say, "Alright, buddy, it's time to sing for us. Time to pay the piper."

Designed myself a shirt to wear to the NJ date of My Chemical Romance's latest tour, little tribute to Thursday & MCR together since I love both bands equally. I'm genuinely not sure how the print quality will turn out on these since I had this idea today and had to rush order it as digital print, no silk screen, booooo. But the uncertainty means...hell yeah I'm going to get the dopamine hit of posting it early. Depending on how the design turns out and if the digital print bothers me I might go work with a local screen printer for a few editions and raffle away the one I wear to the show or something. I'm not really trying to break into the bootleg game but I do like the design.
I figure people can guess what I'm getting at with the design...maybe call it "Understanding in a Time Loop." Even decided to nod to the Giants with the red-blue. The car crash image & watch-compass are actually both discarded images from my Thursday zine.

SWIM comp zine info post/call for submissions!
as some of you know, i am going to see geoff's solo show on november 16, and i want to put together a comp zine about his book, Someone Who Isn’t Me, to give to him at the show. i put out some feelers to see who was interested in submitting a bit ago, so this post has all of the details for how to submit.
what to submit: up to 3 pieces, any printable format is allowed (no video/gif). this means anything relating to SWIM; poetry, drawings, collages, written reviews, photography, whatever you want! The only real requirement is that it is printable and somehow related to SWIM (how it made you feel, imagery it evokes, quotes that particularly spoke to you, anything!)
how to submit it: either dm me your piece(s) (preferrably links to files on google drive or some other file sharing service), or post your piece on tumblr and tag me.
IMPORTANT: after you have submitted your piece(s), please fill out this google form so i can confirm your submission. once i have your response and submission, i will dm you to confirm that i have it.
**(note: if you do not have a google account, please dm me so i can send you the questions on the form.)
DUE DATE OCTOBER 31.
this is a hard deadline, as i need at least 2 weeks to put everything together and print it in time to give a copy to geoff. i can potentially push this deadline a couple of days, only if you absolutely need to. please dm me if you have any concerns about the deadline.
