Ryan Castellucci, who is challenging the UK government to follow its own rules and grant them a nonbinary gender recognition certificate, is in court tomorrow morning.

This is a huge case. Ryan has a really good case and good representation, and if Ryan wins then it would be a decisive and dramatic step in the direction of nonbinary rights in the UK.

Ryan is asking for supporters to attend tomorrow (Tuesday 21st Jan), at 9:30am. The location is Court 63 at The Royal Courts of Justice in Central London. (Search for CA-2024-000474 here.) Dress smartly, and behave quietly and respectfully.

If you can't attend, please consider reblogging this or sending it directly to anyone in London. (You should be able to watch a live stream here.) Please also consider donating to Ryan's crowdfunder.

Their crowdfunder got shut down for being in breach of JustGiving's terms of service. Their new crowdfunder (as linked from their homepage) is here:

This NHS consultation closes at midnight tonight (Tues 25th June).

It took me about an hour, and it's important to participate because they're proposing some gross transphobic changes that specifically prioritise "biological sex" and suchlike.

This article guides you through questions. I will add that you could say that if a cisgender patient doesn't like being in the same ward as a trans patient of the same gender, the cisgender patient should be moved, NOT the trans patient!

(You can take part if you access the NHS as a patient.)

[URGENT] UK NHS consultation on puberty blockers

VERY SHORT DEADLINE! (Tuesday 1st November 2023)

The UK's National Health Service (NHS) are about to ban puberty blockers for all trans adolescents, except for a small group who are eligible and willing to be research subjects.

"As part of this NHS England-led process, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) was commissioned to review the published evidence. Overall, there was no statistically significant difference in gender incongruence, mental health, body image and psychosocial functioning in children and adolescents treated with PSH." -- 6-page introductory PDF to consultation

That's because puberty blockers don't change gender characteristics by definition, you absolute donuts.

They're carrying out a consultation on this because they have to, and there's only two days left. If you are in the UK and you are a young trans person or know any young trans people, please check out this consultation.

Here's the first question, to help you work out if you're in the target group:

In "other", you could put anything like "friend of a trans adolescent", "family member of a trans child", etc. If you're a trans adult who was on blockers or who would have been on blockers if waiting lists had been shorter or family/doctors had been more supportive etc, choose "patient".

Deadline: Tuesday 1st November 2023.

Gender identity, England and Wales: Census 2021

The national data from the England and Wales census of about 59.5 million people has been released for the question about gender identity, counting the number of trans people in that population.

Summary:

People were asked “Is the gender you identify with the same as your sex registered at birth?”, and had the option of selecting either “Yes”, or selecting “No” and writing in their gender identity.
6% didn’t answer the question.
- 118,000 (0.24%) answered “No” but did not provide a write-in response
- 48,000 (0.10%) identified as a trans man
- 48,000 (0.10%) identified as a trans woman
- 30,000 (0.06%) identified as non-binary
- 18,000 (0.04%) wrote in a different gender identity
A total of 262,000 people (0.5%) answered “No”, indicating that their gender identity was different from their sex registered at birth. Within this group:

That’s as many “nonbinary” and “other” answers combined as trans men or trans women! I’m assuming a lot of the non-cis blank textbox people are nonbinary or similar, too?

It’s also worth mentioning that due to the stigma associated with one’s gender not conforming to societal norms, these statistics are probably a little on the low side.

UK petition: Legally recognise non binary gender identity

Yes, it is time once again for the biannual official UK petition to recognise nonbinary genders in law! (Official UK government petitions only last 6 months.)

You can sign if you’re living in the UK, or a UK citizen living anywhere. If you’re not in the UK but have followers who are, please consider giving this a reblog.

Have non binary be included as an option under the GRP (Gender Recognition Panel)/ GRC (Gender Recognition Certificate), in order to allow those identifying as non binary to be legally recognised as their true gender identity.
Parliament debated this topic on 23 May 2022 and announced that despite public support, there are no plans to amend the Gender Recognition Act 2004. This Government claims that it wants everybody in the UK to feel safe and confident to be themselves. Without legal recognition, non binary individuals are actively discriminated against by our Government. The right to marriage or civil partnership, for example, is unavailable to non binary persons.

The deadline is 13 June 2023.

There are 164 signatures so far, and at 10,000 we get a response from the government, and at 100,000 we get a debate in parliament.

You can also see a graph of the signatures on this UK petition signature tracker.

Thanks, folks!

Polls on gender and abortion

I'm running some polls to gather information on gender and views on abortion. They will run for 7 days, ending on Monday 16th May 2022.

The demographic that's currently least represented is trans women, so if you know any trans women who like polls on social media please feel free to tag them in or DM the link to them!

The polls are getting a lot of votes, so I'll make a little post with some graphs afterwards.

Thanks, folks! :)

Crowdfunding for a tech upgrade

Hi all! I'm running a crowdfunder to help me upgrade my laptop in preparation for [hopefully] record-breaking respondents in 2022 - can you chuck in a few £/€/$, or reblog, or something like that? :)

The deadline is 29th September 2021!

Saturday 25th September 2021

A couple of weeks ago I received a £100 donation via bank transfer, and I've been trying to work out how to get Crowdfunder to show that but today I gave up and adjusted the goal down from £1,300 to £1,200 instead. Which means the dashboard now looks like this:

Only £30 and 3 days to go - and if we hit the goal I'll write up and publish the UK results report.

I'm so excited that 63 people love the Gender Census enough to put Real Money down for it. 🥰

The deadline is 29th September 2021!

Thursday 9th September 2021

There are 19 days to go, and the project is 72% funded - about £350 remaining!

A big thank you to everyone who has donated, it's kind of amazing to be so close to the target (£1,300) considering how little promotion I've done - this week has been very intense, for various unrelated reasons!

Also a big thank you to everyone who's spread the word here on Tumblr, and also Twitter. When you want to help and you're not sure how, sharing the link with people who might be interested is always a good bet!

I forgot to mention the perk in the original post: if this laptop gets fully funded, I intend to process and write up the UK results. I wasn't sure whether I would have the energy to do that this year, but I want to give something back, and up-to-date information for one country where the landscape of trans issues is changing so quickly seems like a good way to do that!
