being an archaeologist in tumblr is so funny because I see so many text posts and go. Imperialism pre-dates capitalism. Rebellion against empires pre-dates capitalism. Money pre-dates capitalism. Social inequality pre-dates capitalism. Misogyny pre-dates capitalism. Wealth inequality pre-dates capitalism. Unilateral rule by oppressive rulers pre-dates capitalism. People’s dependence on their job for their survival pre-dates capitalism. Capitalism as an economic system is about 200-250 years old max but these problems are much, much older, and capitalism supports, entrenches, or exacerbates many of these problems… doesn’t mean it invented them and doesn’t mean they will simply cease to be problems After Capitalism.
i think we should be talking about the semi-recent advancements in cystic fibrosis treatment like all the time every day. there hasn’t been a drug like this since AZT medications for HIV infection it is truly fucking miraculous and very important
basically: cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease which makes the mucous a person generates extra sticky. it used to kill people in infancy, then with advancements in medical tech it killed people in young childhood, and until very recently cystic fibrosis patients could expect to live until about thirty years old with consistent painful lung infections and complications.
in 2019 the FDA approved a drug called trikafta (which is really three drugs in one) for cystic fibrosis treatment. what it essentially does is patch up the malfunctioning proteins that cause the extra sticky mucus. trikafta is effective on about 90% of cystic fibrosis patients.
people who had spent their entire lives in and out of hospitals, on and off of ventilators, suffering from pneumonia and sometimes treated through painful procedures like intubation took this drug, got out of bed, coughed up an entire lifetimes worth of mucus out of their lungs over the course of a few hours, breathed clearly for perhaps the first time in their lives, and now go on to live well into their seventies.
like isn’t that insane. isn’t that amazing. doesn’t that give you hope for the future of medical advancements and treatment. fuck. i think about it all the time……
Things that work in fiction but not real life
- torture getting reliable information out of people
- knocking someone out to harmlessly incapacitate them for like an hour
- jumping into water from staggering heights and surviving the fall completely intact
- calling the police to deescalate a situation
- rafting your way off a desert island
- correctly profiling total strangers based on vibes
- effectively operating every computer by typing and nothing else
- ripping an IV out of your arm without consequences
- heterosexual cowboy
This post breaching containment has taught me that a lot of people seem to think they can accurately profile complete strangers. For the record, no the fuck you can't.
Okay but I decided in my mind that someone was an asshole and treated them like they were an asshole and they reacted like an asshole about it so checkmate.
i am fixated on this peanuts scene in particular. its so unsettling and dreamlike. lynchian in nature, down to the fucking sound design

the dramatic change in size that the fence goes through does it for me
spider-chuck, spider-chuck
seriously wtf
I love Dawn and Tara’s relationship so much. Like that scene where Tara and Dawn are both sat outside while the other scoobies are inside (I see what u did there writers, nice symbolism), and Tara is comforting Dawn about feeling left out.
Dawn could’ve used that so much in Series 7 too, when she was struggling to figure out her place as a non-potential.
Because Tara would understand that feeling so deeply as well. Y’know, being a witch herself, but always falling into the background beside Willow, the more powerful witch of the pair.
Because yes, Dawn is supernatural, she was the key after all. But now that that chapter of her life is over, her ‘powers’ fade in comparison to the potential slayers, other young girls who come to her home and seem to have more to offer.
And yes, Dawn had Xander to help her through that crisis of identity. But I always can’t help but wish that it was Tara there with Dawn in that moment.
Because their relationship and mutual understanding had been set up already in season 5. Tara would’ve absolutely been the person Dawn turned to when she felt this way. Because Tara would’ve understood. Of course she would.
I don’t know, I just always wish we had Tara for longer. She enriched the show in such a subtle but measurable way. Her steady dependability and quiet kindness was definitely missed in the final season.
It's what the Green Party thought was best.
Hey, did you guys know we have another Black Princess
THE WEEK December 19, 2025
FASCISM
Basically, the regime admits they fear the truth.
Here’s dril’s candles on a graph for reference.
It’s easy to look at these and assume “well, high crime cities need more police,” but i think that’s putting the cart before the horse.
Police make crime worse.
Police take fiscal oxygen out of the room, away from actual social support programs. The money spent on policing could go to housing, nutritional services, healthcare, civil rights, building inspections, labor rights enforcement, street maintenance, public transportation. But it goes to paying guys to sit around idling Ford Explorers all day and hitting poor people with sticks.
Crime follows poverty in absolutely every single case. Every single “high crime city” is because of the fucking poverty.
The Department of Justice has removed a study showing that white supremacist and far-right violence “continues to outpace all other types of terrorism and domestic violent extremism” in the United States.
Whole list of documents censored/removed/deleted by this shitshow of a regime

Meet the fin-tastic favorites of our Interpretive Programs team! 🐙🐟
Each of our staff members connects with the ocean in their own way, and their favorite animals reflect that. From the Melibe nudibranch’s sweet scent to the giant Pacific octopus’s masterful multitasking, to the monkeyface prickleback with a name that’s as fun to say as it is to spot, each creature holds a special place in our hearts. 💖
For our team, it’s not just about what’s beneath the surface, but the deep appreciation we have for the incredible diversity of life that calls the ocean home. There’s wonder in ocean life, and caring for it helps us all.
What’s YOUR favorite Aquarium animal? Share with us – let’s celebrate the wonders of the ocean together! 🐟👇
there's a comedian who I love whose name is Josh Johnson. because his comedy isn't JUST comedy. I sit down to watch one of his videos and I know he's about to change the way I view something. like he did a video talking about Kendrick Lamar's Super Bowl half time performance where he said,
"art can save your life, art can absolutely save your life. I believe it from the bottom of my heart. but believe me when I tell you entertainment will never be your salvation. art can save your life, but entertainment–by and large is escapism. and no one has ever escaped their chains by forgetting they were there. so you, you cannot, when I tell you, you will not be saved through entertainment alone."
anyway. I just think about that a lot. you can watch the entire video here. and I strongly recommend you do.
I *love* Josh Johnson.
Ran across a Josh Johnson video for the first time around 7-8 years ago, and he was so funny and smart and insightful.
I'm absolutely thrilled that he's getting the credit he's due, because he is really a phenomenal thinker and speaker.
Hamlet as a D&D paladin.
some gems of insight from the reblogs (@aspiring-protagonist and @moderndayathena):

Weren’t you listening? He’s praying. GOES HARD AS FUCK
recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.
It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.
Voting did matter. Even the worst democrat or in all honesty the next worst republican was not going to do all this exact same crazy shit. Voting cannot fix a broken system but if the system asks you to weigh in on how much more broken it wants to get, you can tell it "no, not that far please" instead of effectively "I don't care, go hog fucking wild"
So please vote in the midterms, for the least evil options on the ballots, instead of telling them you just don't mind who they put in charge of whatever the hell they want.
This morning Bear, aged 8, stopped on the walk to school and demanded that I take a picture of a perfect snowflake they found on a cold metal railing. They announced that their school’s headmaster had charged them with the task of finding Free Treasure, and that the snowflake had to be documented. Free Treasure is, according to the headmaster, treasure that doesn’t cost anything. This snowflake was so GOOD - and, to a small British child in the soft green south, so RARE - that it was a highly satisfactory start to their quest.
Unfortunately Bear then spotted a snowflake caught in a spiderweb on a garbage bin, which is objectively more interesting and dynamic Free Treasure (snowflake in spiderweb!! Very rare!!) but which photographs badly. There is no way to photograph that free treasure that doesn’t suck. Bear found this quite frustrating.
The vastness of the world, which contains many cold metal railings AND many rubbish bins, briefly overwhelmed Bear with the knowledge that there is quite likely really good Free Treasure, probably just around the corner even, but the rigid routine of the new year - the necessity of going to school - the inevitable rising of the sun and warming of the world - means that they wouldn’t find it. Bear bathed for a moment in this great wash of philosophy, and then ran off.
I hope you find some good Free Treasure today.
Oh! I had forgotten about this, but when I was shovelling the back yard the other day, i paused because a perfect snowflake had landed on my mitten and i had to take a photo of it.
I think perfect snowflakes are wonderful Free Treasure :)
Not to be meta on main but I am stealing the concept of free treasure, which is itself free treasure.
