Christmas as a cultural icon is starting to get really dystopian in a climate sense, december has historically been a time of year in which there would be snow in a significant portion of europe and north america, and the fact that its not even icy this time of year and all the christmas songs and decorations reference a time of year that will likely never exist in the same way again in my life time is so strange.

I swear to fucking god if I see another post about someone from the southern hemisphere saying shit like this. No one on Tumblr is capable of understanding when someone is talking about their own experience and be normal about it. I don't even really give a shit about the Christmas side of this just that climate change has gotten so bad that there is no longer ice in Scotland in December and you should be worried about that actually. Imagine if people came on here being like I don't give a shit about Australian wildfires because it doesn't effect me

Just saying, while I share the sentiment of being weirded out by increasingly warm winters, the idea of "snowy Christmas" is profoundly anglocentric, even within Europe.

The concept of a "white Christmas" is pretty rare to experience anywhere in Europe southern than Amsterdam (so 3/4ths of Europe, population-wise). Hell, even some of the nordic capitals (Copenhagen and Stockholm) only get white Christmas maybe once per decade or so. Sure, it can snow everywhere, but in December? It's rarely enough for the snow to actually settle.

So yeah, not really a very significant portion of Europe, really.

I live in Central Europe and we ABSOLUTELY used to have snow in December when I was a kid, roughly twenty years ago. We don't anymore. Wtf are some of these replies on.

People really can't cope with stuff happening outside their countries huh? I'm 19, i have 2 snow day memories, those weren't even in December, I think it was like November and February?

And even then, first snow memory I could skate on a lake, second snow memory we were exited because we hadn't gotten any snow to stick the years before and we could FINALLY have a snowball fight again.

Meanwhile, I have pictures from snow days I don't remember, I think the earliest is October and the latest is March (this includes the time between those months), where there was ceveral centimeters of snow, like 5-10. We celebrate even just 1cm nowadays.

I don't even wear a winter jacket anymore. I used to wear big fluffy jackets with fur on the hood. It's gotten to a point those are overkill.

And that's in my lifetime!

Do you know how often I hear about the elfstedentocht? The last one was 29 years ago. It used to be 5-7 years between them. Maybe 10 if we were unlucky. I haven't even heard anyone in a while about "maybe we'll finally get one again with this weather!" I only hear "you think we can skate on real ice this year? Like an actual lake? Not a flooded field?".

We are losing our culture, which we already barely have. So what if this is Europe central?

Bro.I remember that like 10 years ago we used to get around 50 to 60cm of snow on the regular in a city. Like jt was normal and everybody expected it. It was magical. But now? We consider it lucky if we get 10cm of snow once or twice a winter. It really isn’t normal.

the more educated you get on fat issues the more you realize that almost everything that supposedly justifies fatphobia is actually complete bullshit. most of the health conditions that are treated as almost divine punishment for being fat (like heart issues and diabetes) are being revealed to actually *cause weight gain* instead of being caused *by* it. this goes for social 'consequences' of being fat, too. is that "neckbeard" redditor actually fat because he spends all his time online, or is it that he spends all of his time online because he's not treated like a person if you can see that he's fat, so the internet is his best option? everything is less accessible to fat people. seats on busses, at restaurants, and even at things like amusement parks, are frequently too small to comfortably sit in for a fat person. people treat you worse if you're fat, or even try to avoid you entirely. you get judged for doing leisure activities, or even for exercising at a public gym, (which proves the claims of trying to motivate you to get fit are bullshit btw) getting filmed and laughed at, posted online for your body to be a punchline. if you want to be progressive or body positive you *need* to be examining your beliefs. oppressed people are routinely forced into positions that, from the outside, may justify the narrative about these people. black folk are pushed into poverty, so that crime is often their only means of survival, enforcing the idea that black folk are criminals. queer folk are made unsafe in public so that we use codes to identify each other, enforcing the idea that queer folk are trying to secretly seduce people to be gay. and yes, fat folk are forced indoors and online so that they can enforce the narrative that we are lazy shut-ins.
