PAUSE ALL OF MY SERIOUS CRITIQUES. look at these will stans who are outraged that he went to a gay bar in his epilogue scene.

you're laughing. will is gonna get serial killed by jeffrey dahmer and you're laughing.

Whenever a new fantasy/historical drama comes out I eagerly look forward to the rants from the handful of people I follow on here who are deeply into historical fashion and costuming. It's like

I need you to FREAKING listen to me. Back when I lived with my parents my mom would watch Hallmark channel and there was this show called When Calls the Heart. It was supposed to be in like late Victorian era or Edwardian era....... I think? (they have early cars) And THIS is what the costumes look like......

Literally all you had to do to make it quasi-believable was fix their hair/facial hair and give them hats. Also fix the character's neckline, she's the only character in the show where they're like "no she must be hot and have a V neck"

Ok sorry I had to get that out of my system.

Hi! Costumer for TV/Film here. Not really trying to change anyone’s mind, but this example is a made-for-TV movie by the hallmark channel, not a museum exhibit. The priorities are totally different. Historical accuracy is not the goal for stories other than biopics or historical nonfiction. And I can guarantee that the clothes are not the only plot hole or unrealistic circumstance in that film. The goal of this movie is an escapist romance where the audience can easily project themselves onto the protagonist and find their perfect romance vicariously through her. They can’t accomplish that goal on a broad scale if the characters don’t adhere to modern standards of beauty.

Second point: Their other goal is to make as much money as possible while investing as little as possible. That costume designer probably only had a few thousand dollars to do the whole movie on, they certainly didn’t have a full workroom of custom-made craftspeople, and they probably only had a couple weeks of prep time. Historically accurate period dramas are prohibitively expensive to produce at the level of Hallmark to the point that they might not even see a return at all if they made everything perfectly accurate, they take a ton of people on the costume team, and they take months of lead-time before shooting starts. If you’re going to blame anyone, blame the producers, not the designer, but also don’t blame them either because they wouldn’t be able to make any money on an accurate piece for network TV.

Third point: Who cares? Again, it’s not a museum exhibit, it’s a story. If it’s really distracting to you, pretend it’s happening in an alternate universe where this is what people wore. Unless the story is about the clothes, or the clothes are the sole element that’s meant to establish the setting, it’s really not very important that they be completely accurate to a T. They’re not a part of the story, they’re a part of the setting. Unless you love to be upset, you can simply lean in and let yourself believe that these costumes are what the characters wear regardless of historical context.

TL/DR: This is a romance, not a documentary. Historical accuracy is an unrealistic expectation, and is, in fact, not the point.

straight people are so fascinating even when they aren't actively trying to be homophobic. I had a class a few years ago where one assignment was to summarize some eighth century arabic poetry about going out for drinks with the lads before indulging in some gay sex and like half the class came in and said "I'm sorry idk what was happening in this one, they mention having sex with a servant but they also say the servant's a man? where'd the woman come from? I'm so confused." and a few days ago in a shakespeare class I made a comment about how cleopatra and octavius caesar are kind of parallel characters in possessively bartering for mark antony's attention and one of my classmates responded as though I'd been talking about octavia and not caesar, despite the fact that I said "caesar" and "him" multiple times while describing the actions he specifically took. fully incapable of comprehending of anything that's even a little bit gay.

i feel like there's gottabe an inbetween of "you must only feed your child meat and you must only eat meat and be outside 22 hours of every day and teach them to read and use the restroom independently at 6 months old and if you wear anything other than cotton you'll explode immediately" or "ipad baby forever" like i feel like there is an inbetween but if you look anywhere online there is not actually

Normal, well-adjusted, nuanced parents are generally not online telling everyone else how to raise their baby.
