Opera (Without an Opera House)

Watching and listening to opera, even if there's no opera house near you, is more accessible than you might expect. I post a fortnightly list of upcoming opera video streams, but that focuses on newly-available content. There's much more to see beyond that.

Below the cut is an extensive but non-comprehensive list of resources for watching and listening to opera all over the world. Many of these streams are free, others are available on a rental or subscription basis. English captions are available unless otherwise specified.

A naked eye 3D pterosaur installation at Shanghai Natural History Museum

(The guide is describing the exhibit and talking about the various "flying dinosaurs" and their appearance through history as they emerge from the fossil displays)

This is so cool. I've been to a LOT of natural history museums and have never seen anything so creative and also what a terrific way to demonstrate a possible mode of and reason for flight evolution.

It's our first Show and Tell Saturday of the year! I hope you've had a good holiday if it's a holiday where you are - I'm just back from traveling and sorely jetlagged :) Regardless, I assume we have many new things to show off: what's new in your world this week?

Little horse ornaments I made this year. I just (mostly) finished the last one (I need to put the tassels on her).

The body shape and the wing and saddle shapes are traced from childhood cookie cutters, and the rest of the pattern, such as it is, I drew.

I really don't know what I'm doing, my stitches are hardly straight but that doesn't matter as long as I'm having fun!

You can see by the saddle on the peacock horse that I got more experimental and complex as I went on. Really enjoyed her.

Cookie cutters for felt shapes! That's genius!

Do them up to look like iced cookies or gingerbread!

Trace around the cookie cutters and make a cardboard template, or make 2 and cut 1 down by a little bit if you want frosting.

These ones aren't super fancy but they are a nice way of sharing cookies with family, especially family who used the same cookie cutters when you were kids together, etc.

I use two pieces of felt for the bodies, stacked, with no stuffing. I sewed around the edges of these ones with a blanket stitch, which is an incredibly easy stitch to learn.

You can easily do this without a needle and thread, just get some glue that works on felt. You can decorate them with beads or sequins or anything you like. Great fun to do with kids!

This is a great idea for felt ornaments! Very impressed at all your different variations :)

in my head the star wars equivalent of tswift is some human woman named tay’lor spiff or something and her stans are losing their minds over theories that she’s secretly a jedi singing about the horrors of war, even though she’s from a neutral system that hasn’t seen so much as a moral panic in 50 years

the theories get even more egregious during the imperial era, with people straight up thinking she joined the rebellion in secret and is loading her songs with subliminal rebel propaganda. their main piece of evidence for this is if you play a certain song backwards, it sounds like she’s saying “freedom” in shyriiwook. the fans get really defensive if you point out she’s performed at the yearly empire day celebration thrice now and her family historically owned ewok slaves

i regret to inform both you beautiful people that this isn’t going to go how you think it will

spiff fans (also known as “spiffies”) insist that the two decommissioned venator-class destroyers spiff purchased, the bad blood and the reputation, are for diplomatic purposes that benefit the rebellion. jedi’lors have concocted theories that she served on both ships during the clone wars and was respectful of every clone that served there, despite her courtship of a gravball player that thrice advocated against the clone veterans being granted natural citizenship

all goofing aside I don't understand the urge to reimagine Tay'lor Allisoarn Spiff as a secret Jedi fighting for the rebellion when the rebel alliance is literally like overflowing with women fighting the empire. Gara and Ke'Cha and Mileu and Halcey are right there. like what are we doing here. like I'm not even saying you can't like Taylor but why would you hang all your hopes of taking down the empire on her

Isn't Lady Gara a force sensitive?

🪐chirodactylmanisagatewaydrug Follow

Hence why I put her in the list of famous force using women who are in the rebel alliance?

(okay ignore the fact I've put an image in here but this is ops icon)

#im sure op has this post muted by now but Ur icon is so real op

The icon is because of this post

btw to just clarify for anyone who sees this reblog of this post

op is basically saying something along the lines of "yea ik tay'lor spiff is a jedi but like. why is she y'all's only force using rebel icon when there are all these other force users in the rebellion???"

i might have worded this badly but hopefully i got the main point across

Hi OP here I most CERTAINLY DID NOT SAY TAY'LOR SPIFF IS A JEDI???

(based on this post)

you wouldn't believe who showed up in today's Jango Fett comic issue

(Jango Fett #4 by Ethan Sacks and Luke Ross)

head in my hands. she looks so much like the design i made too

how are u falling for hypothetical propaganda

happy 100k to this post. this awful awful post

Me when I'm old as fuck and my grandkids talk to me: this reminds me of a post. I gotta go find the post

Grandkids: grandpa sit down you don't need to show us a post

Me: (not listening) Now where was that post....

i make experimental music but we're doing a double blind trial so i don't actually know which music is experimental and which is the control

I have a very rough idea in my head that I don't think I can clearly articulate beyond "And that concludes tonight's reports on German air forc—WHAT'S THIS? IT'S KING ARTHUR WITH A STEEL CHAIR"

IDK what this is about, but I want to know more.

This isn't exactly the same idea but it could be but there is more rattling around in here so:

  • The Blitz here manages to qualify as Britain's Darkest Hour, thus triggering the return of Arthur from the Realm Avalon.
  • He does not speak a lick of modern English. He speaks an unholy mishmash of Brittonic and Late Classical Latin.
  • (Honestly I can see the latter becoming a plot point if they manage to get their hands on a Roman Catholic priest to act as a translator. It wouldn't be a perfect arrangement, but probably better than anything else.)
  • Truthfully he probably gets mistaken for a madman.
  • Somehow manages to steal a Spitfire out from under the RAF's nose, proceeds to use it to bring down like half an enemy squadron on his own, then lands in a field in the middle of nowhere.
  • Police and RAF converge on his location on account of the whole "stealing a plane" thing. They eventually overwhelm him with sheer numbers, but he manages to knock out an impressive number of them in the process. I mean, come on. It's Arthur.

"a catholic priest" i mean yeah sure why not but JRRTOLKIEN himself was alive and a teacher at the time so go big or go home.

You know what sure why not let's just make literal real-life JRRT himself a character in this Arthurian return story, he deserves it.

The concept of knights romancing other knights does tend to appeal to me, but every time I see artwork of armored knights snuggling, it just looks like

CLANG CLANG CLONK Sir Marhault leaned into Sir Gaheris, each pressed against the inside of his own armor CLANK CLINK CLUNK Sir Marhault smelled metal and his own sweat CLINK BONNNNGGG he laid his head against that broad shoulder and the eyeholes in his helmet went off-kilter CLANG as his cheek smooshed against sweaty metal TING!

Like maybe if I can achieve the suspension of disbelief necessary to enjoy the aesthetic of medieval knights while ignoring the sociopolitical realities surrounding their class, I should be able to also imagine that cuddling while wearing armor could be cozy and physically satisfying and not at all like banging into the person in the garbage can adjacent to yours, but. In fact I cannot.
