The magick of teas

Disclaimer: I only slept about three hours when writing this so if you can make sense of my typos or random use of the wrong word, I appreciate it.

Every so often I see joke posts about making soup or tea as a magical potion but... that is a potion. Chicken Soup is one of the oldest, most culturally accepted, mild healing potions.

It's a rebellion against traditionally feminine roles that has lead to a decline in "Kitchen witchcraft" but soups and teas, in particular, have been potions for centuries. And a lot of it has been accepted as medicinal science. Herbal remedies are how we discovered aspirin from willow bark, for example.

So with some folk superstition / magick mingled with herbalism and actual medical knowledge I present to you a short list of teas and their magical purposes.

First a bit of folk magick for all teas. Stir clockwise AKA Sunwise (Deosil) to induce a spell and to infuse and intention into your tea. Stir counter-clockwise to end or undo something, such as a perceived hex. Put your intention or desire into the stirring.

Adding honey to the tea helps with mild coughs and sore throats. And yes, you can add sugar and / or cream or milk to any tea. It won't compromise the magick. Raw honey is especially good in medicinal teas because raw honey is a natural, mild antibiotic.

All teas help with hydration so that won't be mentioned here in the list of medicinal and magical properties.

Disclaimer: This is NOT a substitution for medications. Always consult your own physician whenever possible for medical concerns.

Home remedy and magical uses for tea:

Hibiscus tea = Good for helping to regulate blood pressure.

_______________________

White tea - Relieves upper raspatory infections / head colds and may help to prevent colds. High in antioxidants.

_____________________________

Green tea - Also helps with head colds. Ginseng has many medicinal properties so yes, even Arizona's iced green tea with honey and ginseng is a remedy. I tend to crave it when I'm feeling under-the-weather. Green tea is high in antioxidants though white tea might have more antioxidants, which is why I listed that one first.

_______________________

Peppermint - Aids with indigestion or upset stomach. Also freshens breath. Can aid with heartburn. When mixed with sugar and light cream or half-and-half (half-cream / half-milk) or with just milk, it becomes a desert beverage that might help induce a seasonal Yule-like sensation. If treating a stomach ailment, it might be best to leave out any cream or milk. Sugar is perfectly fine and will not interfere with its medicinal properties.

__________________________

Spearmint - Calms some mild stomach ailments. Freshens breath.

_________________________

Catnip in tea - Relieves stomach pain in humans (Part of the mint family).

_________________________

Valarian root - Natural sedative. Valarian root will aid in sleep. (This works so long as you are not ADHD. Usually works for neurotypical people, sometimes works if you're not. You may want to test it on yourself first. Some neurodivergent people have had adverse reactions).

____________________________

Vervain AKA Verbena in tea or as its own tea - When consumed this tea induces a temporary protection against vampiric powers such as hypnosis. (No, this is not just in vampire diaries. I used to think it was just a vampire diaries thing too.)

_______________________

Hibiscus, rosehips, and cinnamon - Nostalgia tea. This tea can help calm you and invoke fond memories of the winter season, particularly of Yule / Christmas. It can induce a comforting, warm feeling.

________________________________

Herbal tea mixture: Chamomile, tilia flowers, valerian root. spearmint, lemongrass, and hawthorn. = Sleep aid tea. Relaxes and helps bring on sleep. (This works so long as you are not ADHD. Usually works for neurotypical people, sometimes works if you're not. You may want to test it for yourself first. Some neurodivergent people have had adverse reactions). A name brand version is, of course, Celestial Seasonings' Sleepy Time Tea and Sleepy Time Extra Tea. (stronger variation.)

________________________________

English breakfast tea, Irish Breakfast tea, and Scottish breakfast tea. = Stimulant. This will wake you up more quickly and more potently than ordinary black tea. They are listed here in order of weakest to strongest. Scottish breakfast tea, when brewed just right, is stronger than coffee.

______________________________

Lemon tea = Aids in sore throat and helps with singing / vocal range. Also usually contains vitamin C so it can help with sinus infections, upper raspatory infections / head colds and preventing them. This works best without cream or milk.

___________________________

Ginger tea = Helps with upset stomach. Similar to how ginger ale (with real ginger) helps. When sweetened this will usually taste like flat ginger ale. This works best without cream or milk. Honey or sugar are optional. With the right amount of sugar it will have a similar taste to flat ginger ale.

____________________________

Chamomile tea = This one will aid with mild fever, inflammation, and menstrual cramps. It also can help to relax and calm you.

_____________________________________

Rose tea (Particularly wild rose) = Will ward off demons and vampires.

_______________________

Herbal blend: Rose (Particularly wild rose), Hawthorne, and verbena (AKA Vervain) (garlic optional though I don't recommend it as it ruins the flavor) = vampire warding tea. Will also work on some demons.

___________________

Chai = Dispels negativity and can invoke luck with its cinnamon content.

_________________________

Black tea = Has mild medicinal properties. Many find it comforting and familiar. It can invoke a sensation of the autumn and when consumed near the end of summer it may help seem to speed along the arrival of autumn and cooler weather.

___________________________

Pumpkin spice tea - This is black tea mixed with the traditional "Pumpkin spice" spice mixture and usually also with dried pumpkin added. This tea works as a protection against evil, wandering ghosts, bad luck, demons, and some black magick.

The spices in the Pumpkin Spice mixture such s cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, etc are all spices used in protection and luck charms. Even the the dried pumpkin is a protection ward against evil since Irish immigrants to North America started using pumpkin in the carving of Jack-o-lantern protection wards (as opposed to the more traditional turnip Jack-o-lanterns used in Ireland). It was believed that the pumpkin versions worked just as well if not better than the traditional turnip versions.

Name brand variations of Pumpkin Spice tea include Celestial Seasonings' Sweet Harvest Pumpkin and Bigelow's Pumpkin Spice tea. (Personally I prefer the Bigelow version because the Celestial Seasonings version has Roasted Chicory and I'm not a fan of the taste of that. But the Bigelow version also contains licorice root, which is often considered a tea filler / sweetener, and I know some people don't like that one. So check the ingredients or mix and match to make your own.)

_______________________

Warm sweet apple cider (Cloudy apple juice, also available as Motts' "Natural" version of their apple juice. NOT hard cider. This is the alcohol-free kind) can help to invoke a sensation of the autumn and invoke autumn weather. And when mixed with a little cinnamon or cinnamon and nutmeg or pumpkin spice-like seasoning configurations, can ward against evil and bad luck. This can also be served chilled but warmed brings out the fragrance and helps with any attempt at autumn weather spells.

______________

Another natural sleep aid beverage is milk served slightly warm (Body temperature) or even at room temperature, mixed with a drop of vanilla extract (or to your liking), and raw honey. (If you don't have raw honey, regular is fine.) This sweet mixture will taste like melted vanilla ice cream when blended correctly and can aid against insomnia.

A warning, J. K. Rowling discusses a wolfsbane tea in Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban. Do not attempt to make ANY tea containing wolfsbane, in case this wasn't common sense. Wolfsbane, AKA aconite, AKA Monkshood, is a highly deadly neurotoxin with no antidote. It will kill anything!

where has this been all my life??

this is how you get tea to not be bitter. I didn’t like green tea until I learned not to brew it with boiling water.

Another hack for green tea if you don’t have a thermometer… Let the tea bag sit in cold water while you’re heating up the water.

I don’t remember where I learned this but I always do this when I’m making my pitchers of green tea. And it seems to help.

Some people call that stewing tea and I “stew” it when I’m lazy. (which is every night...)  Some tea drinkers consider stewing to be blasphemy and nasty but it’s quick and potent.

First  Water and sugar in my mug, plus teabag.    Put mug in microwave on high for one minute and thirty seconds.  Then let sit about thirty seconds. Then fifteen seconds on high again.  And a final fifteen seconds.  Than stir.  If it’s plain black tea, breakfast tea, or Earl Grey / Lady Grey I like to add a bit of half and half.  And there you go.

Something tragic I noticed in Skin Deep

I am sure other Rumbelle fans may have noticed this long before I did but I just noticed this and thought I should share it.

First I’m going to flash back here to season two when we saw Milah mock Rumplestiltskin with her pirate friends at the tavern.  Later when she’s hung over (despite how she treated him) human Rumplestiltskin offers her a cup of tea but she does not take it.

(Ironic that there are some haters who insist this guy somehow abused her. She left their child home alone with a fire while she mocked her disabled husband to pirates.  And later when she’s hung over he tries to give her tea.   Sooooo abusive.  That’s sarcasm, by the way…)

Anyway…

In Season four during the AU where he is “The Light One” it’s Belle who offers him a cup of tea to help clear his thoughts.

He ends up dropping it and it becomes that universe’s chipped cup.

The point here is that tea has always had a special significance to Rumple before he even became the imp, before even Belle’s chipped cup.

imageimage

Now back to Skin Deep.  After Rumplestiltskin kicks Belle out we see Rumple alone at his spinning wheel when Regina barges in.  He was not expecting her that day.  She’s there to discuss “a certain little mermaid.”

However…  look at the tea he has out.  Rumple had two tea cups ready.  I think he was hoping that despite having kicked her out, that Belle would again return and he could make amends over a cup of tea, as he would have when he was mortal.

Look. There are two cups.  He wasn’t expecting Regina.  They both make that clear.  She just helped herself to the tea.   So who was that second cup for?

He was hoping Belle would return.  He wanted to talk to her, he wanted to be the one to serve her tea.

And what is the first thing he does for Belle in the very first episode of Season two?  Well, it’s interrupted by the heroes barging into his shop but he’s preparing her that tea finally.

I think that after Rumplestitlskin kicked Belle out in Skin Deep he kept setting out two cups and tea in case she’d come back, hoping she’d come back.   And after he believed her to be dead he would have given anything to have that cup of tea with her…

It was always there in the back of his mind so when they were finally reunited it was the first thing he did with her, besides admitting he loves her.

When he serves you tea it’s his way of apologizing or an act of humility.  In any event it seems to be his go to instinct for “making things right.”

I wonder if that’s something child Rumple got from the spinsters who raised him, that when things are bad, or you are fighting with someone, pour them a cup of tea.  Tea makes everything better.  Even the AU Belle set it.  “Things always look better after a nice cup of tea.”

Even during the flashback in Season five when Milah wanted him to kill the healer and he couldn’t bring himself to do it, they shared a cup of tea together afterward.

One of the first things I loved about this show was that it seemed like it was talking in symbols to an extent I hadn’t really seen in a TV show before. I love what you’ve pointed out about the presence of tea and two teacups. I don’t know if this interpretation holds up, but lining up all the scenes you’ve pointed out makes it seem like the tea is representing something more than just a custom or an intention to apologize, especially when we see the Evil Queen come barging in at the end of Skin Deep and helping herself.

• Rumple offers Milah tea while he’s entreating her to stay with him in their life together, and she rejects it just before she runs off with Hook.

• Milah & Rumple share tea after he couldn’t kill the healer. She hadn’t committed to leaving him just yet. (I don’t remember this scene that well, tbh).

• Rumple trades for Belle, she thinks because he was lonely in the Dark Castle all by himself, and he makes one of her duties serving him tea. She botches it the first time, dropping the cup and chipping it. So effectively he makes a deal with her that brings her into his life as part of the service she agreed to. He falls for her, thinks she loves him too, but then she nearly cures his curse without his consent, jeopardizing his chances at reconciling with his son and giving him cause to doubt her affection. You can throw in the part where he thinks that she was killed because of him or not, either way I think his heart was at least a little broken by the whole ordeal (not unlike a certain cup).

• The Evil Queen comes barging into the Dark Castle uninvited after manipulating Belle into getting herself thrown out. Rumple’s still got his tea set out, complete with two cups, and he’s still willing to give Belle a home if she needs it. Instead Belle is gone and the Evil Queen is trying to help herself to his tea, (sort of) the same Evil Queen who later, in Storybrooke, manipulates Rumple into some semblance of an affair when he and Belle are on the outs again, and has a history of being shitty to Belle seemingly just because she can. But Rumple does not want her to have his tea in the Dark Castle, so he makes her leave.

• In 2x01, Rumple has just discovered that Belle is alive and forgives him and still loves him, and he thinks they’re going to be able to have a life together so he’s making her tea, but the Charmings show up and get him in trouble before Belle can accept his tea, running off into Storybrooke and leaving him again before they’ve even had a chance to try life together.

• When Belle and Rumple are on their hamburger date, after giving each other another chance but on a much more sedate level than cohabitating and sleeping together, they have iced tea. (Maybe not as symbolic, but this one amuses me.)

• Lacey agrees to go out with Mr. Gold because she’s intrigued by his power and scary reputation, not because she’s looking to build a life with anyone, while Rumple is hoping she’ll fall in love with him so he can break her curse and get her memories back. When they have their date at Granny’s, he has iced tea and she has no tea at all.

• Many things in the Heroes & Villains AU seemed to be foreshadowing, as though the Author can try to fabricate things with the pen but is still unable to deviate too far from the reality he’s supposed to be recording. So Rumple & Belle are happily married and have a baby, because in the future they’re going to be happy for a hot second and also have a baby, though apparently not concurrently (yet? Hope hope?) Belle offers Rumple tea but he drops the cup and chips it. This one’s more of a stretch because of the nature of the AU, but I think it lines up with Belle giving him another chance when she realizes he convinced her to leave Storybrooke to save her from the Dark Ones, and Rumple botching it by revealing he’s the Dark One again after they’ve slept together and she finds out she’s pregnant. This particular sequence of events seemed to really do a number on Belle’s heart.

I’m sure there are more, and now I want to go find them all. Maybe they’re intentional, maybe they’re just coincidences, but I guess I’m trying to say the tea may not be just what Rumple does when he’s trying to apologize, but a literary symbol for his heart or his love (or Belle’s, in the last case). I never would have made the connection if you hadn’t pointed all these scenes out in the first place!

Thank you for expanding on this and reblogging for the expansion.

Rumple even has tea with the healer himself after he can’t bring himself to kill him.  It was the healer he had the tea with, but otherwise this all correct.

stop putting actual milk in your tea

Can we ask the Canadians to stop putting their milk in a god damned bag?

Yo, the Europeans may be asleep BUT THE AUSSIES NEVER SLEEP BECAUSE IF YOU SLEEP YOU DIE.

Scones are not biscuits, milk should have an expiry date and be stored in the fridge, in a bottle.

LOL

Also… the Europeans are not asleep anymore. it’s 8:30 here and I’ve been awake and working for 3 hours.

Also… Here in Ireland, we don’t sleep. We wait.

20 years ago here in middle Europe we had mild in bag too and now it´s back! :-) Also, I love milk in black tea! My mother taught me that. With sugar.

Try it with half and half (Half whole milk and half creme) it’s delicious. That and sugar, it’s the only way I’ll have black tea now.  And I drink it every night.

Tom and Loki differences: Part 1

Tom and Loki: The differences Part 1: Tea Time

Too many Loki fans seem to have a difficulty dividing where Loki ends and Tom Hiddleston begins. This is not entirely their fault as some comedy sketches among other things imply that Tom is Loki in disguise and his visit to "Hall H" at Comic Con has been classified as an Alternate Universe Marvel canon.

However I am here to set certain facts straight about Tom Hiddleston vs. Comic book Loki.

First - Hot beverage of choice. Many fans have made a "fanon" notion that Loki is a coffee drinker. They convince themselves that Loki Likes coffee. Here are a few comic book panels to say otherwise.

Loki is very much a tea drinker. He mentions tea and tea based traditions many times in the comics but I have never seen him so much as mention drinking coffee within the comics.

How many of you Loki fans even know what the phrase "Shall I be Mother?" even means? I'll tell you. It's an old English / child's tea party traditional phrase meaning "Shall I pour the tea?" Someone who is from Asgard, still learning Earthly pop culture went out of his way to learn the "Midgard" (Earthly) term "Shall I be Mother?" and actually had to explain it to another character. He also told Magneto he has a tea garden. He might have been joking but that's the example he chose. And he ordered tea at the diner he hangs out in for "breakfast meats." And yet many of you convince yourselves he is a coffee man. Why? Because that is your drink of choice? Because you can't fathom a man liking tea?

Sorry, dears. He's a tea drinker, always has been. Loki and Tom don't have to share the same likes and dislikes. I, myself, do not know Tom Hiddleston's drink of choice but I have heard that the assumption of Loki preferring coffee is based on his choices. Instead of making up "fanon" (Fan made-up canon) why not look in the many, many comic books Loki has appeared in for the real canon?
