New Meme Alignment Chart came to me in a fit of Mania this morning. Have fun kids!
This post is less than 24 hours old and I am having a GREAT time rifling through the notes and seeing everyone's OC's and series I've never heard of. None context with left tag screaming.
Happy slightly belated one-year anniversary to this meme! Please keep sharing the blorbos.
My Stormlight take
Laral turns out to have become an excellent character. Not in a 'this is a character I like for her sympathetic personality' way, but rather in a 'she pisses me off, and I like that because of everything a depiction of a character like her brings to the thematic content of the narrative' way. Between her and Shallan, there is a pattern when Kaladin expresses a very legitimate grievance concerning the way they, and lighteyes in general, treat him with biases inherent to nobility in a rigidly stratified society (which they may not recognise, being products of that same society, but it doesn't excuse their doubling down on their rightness when pointed at the shortcomings in their attitudes), and gets shamed for not understanding that the other side of this arrangement of oppression doesn't have it easy, either. Which would all be great for portraying social injustice and disparity and the way they manifest themselves in individuals in a realistic light — if it weren't for the fact that the narrative seems to genuinely believe it is Kaladin who needs to learn a valuable lesson in compassion in these situations.
they did the moash (they did the monster moash) the monster moash (it was a graveyard smoash)
I would love to see a fantasy novel where the lore that the reader / protagonist learns at first is not true
e.g. they're told that this kind of creature has some kind of psychic or pheromone-based "mate bond" that cannot be broken; but it turns out that's a popular myth that has never been scientifically substantiated, and is basically used to keep people in bad relationships (basically the equivalent of "human women are biologically submissive")
"lore" is imo too often treated like information that the author is giving the reader, and it just happens to be using the medium of diagetic (that is, 'in-story') exposition.
it's so much more interesting and dynamic to treat "lore" as information that is generated and disseminated in-story. who is telling the protagonist this information? under what historical and social circumstances was this idea formed? what political motives are there for trying to get people to believe this information? which characters would disagree with it? would the protagonist believe it, or be sceptical? does the plot bear it out, or cast doubt on it?
This is one of the things that Animorphs is very, very good at. In the early books in the series, you get all kinds of lore on the Andalite/Yeerk War from Andalites (Ax and Elfangor) which the Animorphs accept as true because they have no other sources of information. Over the course of the series, as they talk to Yeerks, Hork-Bajir, and Andalites who dissent from the party line, they learn that much if not most of what they absorbed from Elfangor and Ax early on isn't true, or makes glaringly huge omissions to the point of being lies.
“I asked chatgpt” well I asked navani and she said journey before destination, you bastard. write your own damn essay
writing a transfemme stormlight archive oc who always wanted to learn engineering and science but didn’t want to be an ardent so she just gave up on it
then she bonds an Inkspren and gets her free transition and goes to urithiru and just doesn’t mention she used to be a boy. but it’s socially acceptable for her now to study math and science so she goes to the ardents like
“hello i am a Radiant and therefore you Must Observe My Every Desire” and starts working on their projects with them (after a chat with navanni)
so then you get this hilarious situation where this poor girl learned how to read 3 days ago and takes forever to read the women’s script and constantly asks what this or that function means and the other ardents assume she’s just a kinda dense country girl who bonded a spren
and in reality she is one of the smartest people around she’s only taking 10 minutes to read a single page because, let me repeat, she didn’t know how to read *3 days ago*
she also immediately read dalinar’s book thinking he was a hidden trans icon, man learning how to read, before realizing he’s just a heretic and being kind of weirded out by him (he’s too intense)
anyway working on a fic right after rhythm of war where she’s just trying to learn how to elsecall with the ardents and rushu is also there because i love them more than anything
also the sibling would definitely whisper into her ear “I know what you are” and say nothing else
lirin is so disapproving of kaladin joining (& staying in) the army that I think it would be funny if kaladin internalized this "I'm a disappointment to my father :(" mindset and starts assuming all of his choices will make lirin upset but actually that's not true it's just the military specifically that lirin has an issue with
kaladin goes to lirin like "dad... i'm trans 😔" and lirin's just like awesome we need more surgeons who are allowed to read
and kaladin's just like
what
I vibe with this so hard. Lirin’s always felt like my dad turned up to 11, and me joining the military or otherwise hurting other people is the only thing he wouldn’t abide.
(Also, my parents’ response to me coming out as trans was “how long did you know? Why didn’t you tell us & start a decade ago?”)
listen i've heard people's takes that what type of knight radiant a character becomes has more to do with what they personally need to develop and help themselves as opposed to what they are already good at, which i do think is extremely interesting and makes sense considering how things go in the book series, but can you honestly tell me you don't think kaladin would have made a more effective bondsmith than dalinar. kaladin is creating unions without even trying while dalinar is still trying to come to terms with his 100000000 war crimes. when i think about like literally every stormlight archive character i think dalinar is THE WORST POSSIBLE CHOICE for bondsmith. the worst possible. (well technically the second worst, the worst was gavilar). they should have put like anybody else in charge of the war and maybe their coalition would have been more effective. oh my god.
in the alternate version of Way of Kings that exists in my head, Gavilar, Dalinar, and assorted other lighteyed high class royal powerful people are trying to strong arm the Stormfather into becoming their spren to gain Bondsmith powers, meanwhile Kaladin, local union organizer, is just sitting on the edge of a chasm somewhere after uniting all the bridgemen to save their lives (8th time he's formed a union) and the literal Wind Itself is like hey you're good at that do you want to be my Radiant?
On the other side of the war camps the Stormfather sits up and is like huh odd there's another Bondsmith and Dalinar et al are like. WHAT
BONDSMITH KALADIN, FOR YOUR PLEASURE

Patience had never been Dalinar Kholin’s strongest quality. He was working on it. He was working on a lot of things. Nevertheless, the Stormfather was testing him.
“Stormfather, are we not facing down a Desolation?” he said, not for the first time. “I know you wish to prevent it? So I do not understand why you insist on being so difficult.”
POWERS SUCH AS MINE ARE NOT TO BE TAKEN LIGHTLY, DALINAR KHOLIN. THEY MAY DESTROY THE WORLD AS MUCH AS SAVE IT.
“Be that as it may, we are running out of time—”
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PRESSURE ME, HUMAN. I HAVE OUTLIVED A THOUSAND GENERATIONS OF YOUR KIND. I WILL NOT BE YOUR TOOL.
Dalinar took a deep, steadying breath to avoid succumbing to his worst instincts. It was, still, too easy to jump to anger. “Stormfather,” he said more calmly. “Are you not the one who commanded me to unite? I fail to understand why you are so resistant to giving me the tools to do just that.”
YOU WANT IT TOO MUCH, DALINAR.
“What does that mean?”
But he sensed the Stormfather was no longer listening.
HMM, said the spren, sounding… amused? Dalinar did not think he had heard that emotion from the Stormfather before. HOW INTERESTING.
“What?”
WHILE YOU HAVE WORKED TO GAIN THE POWERS TO UNITE—
“What else would I be doing?”
—IT SEEMS MY DAUGHTER HAS FOUND SOMEONE WHO IS ALREADY DOING IT.
Dalinar tried to grasp what that meant. “I… what?”
LEARN QUICKLY, DALINAR KHOLIN, said the Stormfather. Now he was definitely amused. THERE IS ALREADY A BONDSMITH IN YOUR MIDST.
“What? Who?”
If Dalinar could barely get a shred of the Stormfather’s respect, then he couldn’t fathom any of the other highprinces—
LOOK ELSEWHERE, DALINAR, said the Stormfather. BROADEN YOUR MIND.
Then he was gone, and Dalinar was more confused than ever.
A Bondsmith? Already? How?
Who?

For the second time in as many months, Kaladin found himself standing at the edge of a chasm.
“I have to say, Syl,” he said, looking down into the plummeting depths. “This is a little ironic.”
“I don’t know what that means!” she said, flying cheerily around his head as a bundle of leaves.
“It means, not too long ago you were trying to get me not to do this.”
“That was different! You aren’t going to die this time. I’m pretty sure…”
Encouraging.
“Are you absolutely certain you want me to do this?” Kaladin asked the Wind, which was blowing through his hair.
You mussssst, it whispered.
“I thought you said you trusted me.”
I do. Now, you must trust me.
“A leap of faith!” Syl said.
I will catch you, said the Wind. Trussssst me.
Its voice was comforting, alluring… but dangerous, too. It was a primordial force of the planet. Not to be underestimated.
I will not let you down, Kaladin, it purred. As you have not, for me.
“I’m not sure I’ve done much.”
You have. My world is fractured. You have worked to heal it.
“Have I?”
Do you remember the oathsssss you swore?
“I will find power in unity,” Kaladin said. “I will find unity in difference.” And then, the one that had been settling recently in his mind, yet unspoken. Saving the bridgemen was only the start, wasn’t it? They had much greater work left to do.
“I will bring together those forcibly divided,” he said.
We have worrrrrk to do, hummed the Wind, gusting around him and nearly knocking him off the plateau. Do you trust me?
When he thought back… he always had. The Wind had always been there for him. On the bridge runs. When he fought with the spear. Even as a child, running fast before the storm wall, trying to stay outside as long as he could before the torrent hit. The Wind had always held his hand. Carried him.
And surely it would now.
“A leap of faith!” Syl said again, flying off over chasm as if to encourage him.
“I trust you,” Kaladin said, and stepped out into open air.

It turns out, transitioning isn’t nearly so difficult as it could be when you’re in love with the guy who tried to stab you to death. Oh, and the world’s ending.
Im obsessed with kaladin he fucking rules
(I just started oathbringer)
Every time someone calls Shallan’s sense of humor cringe without realizing that it is part of her character… an angel loses its wings… my brother in Vorinism, she’s a 19-20 year old (in earth years) girl who spent all of her life in a horribly abusive household and developed her humor as a coping mechanism to make herself and her brothers feel better about living with The Worst Guy Ever. She’s not meant to be amazingly funny. She tells dumb dad jokes and that’s so stupidly endearing. Do u not get it. Kaladin is allowed to be cringe with his emo boy dialogue and no one complains about it…. Why can’t she……. The story is about 20 year olds Doing Their Best of course they’re going to be cringe
