BRONTË
She/Her - Protector - Chaotic Good
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

"Do you walk in the meadow of spring? Do you talk to the animals, do you hold their lives from a string? Do you ponder the manner of things?"

Though raised in an environment of violence, Brontë eventually learned that force isn't always the best solution to a problem. Through her visions (and through her careful, though unnoticed, observation of the exploits of her more notorious family members), she became well-acquainted with suffering and pain. She trained with the boldest and fiercest warriors of the Plaguebringer's domain before setting out to hone her skills in other lands, learning new and deadly methods of combat with each place she carved a path through. It wasn't until she reached the domain of the Shadowbinder that she took up a new path...
After falling deathly ill and being nursed back to health by a doctor named Faulkner and his apprentice - her cousin Aria - she realized that there was more to life than becoming mighty and infamous, and while she still fights tooth and talon to defend her new clan, she would rather heal than destroy.

TRIVIA
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
  • She wears the Sky Crystal and the Ghost Flame Candles to honor Oath & Solace's side of her family.
  • She wears the Teal Wing Drapes and the Learned Sage Shawl to honor Misshapen and Elsewhere's side.
  • The bracelet was a gift from her father and mother, although she knew better than to ask where it came from.
  • As for the mask, well - that's just how Faulkner shows love.

STORY

Brontë was a strong fighter, growing tougher and mightier with each spar, battle, and brawl. She feared no dragon and no beast. She had been formidable - if inexperienced - even before she had left home on one of her father's ships, and her incessant training since then has served her well. She might well have been on her way to some grand conquest one day, if she had not encountered a village not far from the lands of Shadow.

She proudly stepped through the center of the village street, preparing for either accolades or attack, depending on the attitudes of the locals. But to her dismay, neither arrived. In fact, the village seemed nearly abandoned, and upon closer inspection, it seemed almost like some kind of ghost town...
Then she saw it. A massive trench dug into the town square, dirt piled around it and stones carelessly tossed every which way. What caused this, she wondered, and what could be its purpose? Tentatively, she stepped closer. She was too close by the time the wind shifted. Gagging at the stench of decay from what she realized was a mass grave, she fled the ravaged village as fast as she could.

But she wasn't fast enough to escape the pestilence... By the time she had torn through the tangled woods near Wispwillow Grove, she was already deathly ill... The last thing she remembered was collapsing beside the roots of a gnarled tree below the shadow of a mountain, howling in rage at a dishonorable death...

However, to her shock, she did not die. She awoke. Someplace warm, with soothing smells and soft words. A red blur hovered above her. There was something on its face... Coughing and snarling, she tried to claw at the mysterious shape, but it batted her weak talons away as easily as brushing away a dandelion seed. "Relax," the blur said. "And breathe, for Shadow's sake. Deeply! Else your lungs may not recover. You'll live, though, if I have anything to say about it." As Brontë blinked, the red blur slowly formed into a dragon, a Ridgeback wearing a long coat and a strange mask.

"Who... Where..." Every word came as a gasp.

"Less talk, more breath. I am Faulkner, and you are my patient. You're in our little hospital on the Moonrise Mountain, in Wispwillow Grove. Or close to it, anyway. This is the territory of the Shadeloom Clan. Aria saw you coming from a mile away. Figuratively, of course. The both of us have dealt with this illness before, and this clan is no stranger to it. No one comes near you without a mask for two more days, now that you fever has broken."

Brontë coughed again. "You... Annoying. ... Aria?" Somehow that name was familiar, yet she couldn't place it.

"My former apprentice, yes. Of course, the apprentice has become the master at this point. Though I came out of retirement for this special case... They told me, when they had a vision of you, that you're some kind of cousins."

Ah, that explained it. "The one... who... ran away."

"Yes, that sounds right, as I understand it. Now, breathe deeply. These vapors will allow you to sleep."

"No... No! No sleep.... No....tricks..." But she was already fading away.

Faulkner and Aria cared for her in shifts, while a third masked dragon - Evika, she was told - brought them supplies, careful to maintain a safe distance to avoid breaking the quarantine. By day, her elder cousin chatted with her in between medications and gentle exercise, eager for any news about the family they'd left behind. By night, Faulkner was her companion, reading with her from a book of adventure tales that he'd asked Evika to bring for her entertainment.

To Brontë's surprise - and chagrin - that annoying Ridgeback doctor was actually rather kind...and handsome.

So it was that a second Starwood Seer joined the Shadeloom Clan, and another warrior embraced the path of healing and peace.

"Dragons born with common plague eyes have the ability to peer into the future, albeit not willingly. Their visions are limited to things that are sick, dead, or dying. They get their visions randomly, and cannot control them. Training can help them learn how to control their visions."
