Updated Website Totally Sucks

I used H&R Online for many years in past (2002-2022) and it was fine. I tried coming back yesterday and now it is downright horrible. Not intuitive at all. I tried to ask a simple question about using the revamped software and spent over 2 hours trying to get an answer to no avail. When I signed up they suggested i b pay $39.99 for a time limited $89.99 value deal., which I did. When I proceeded to do my Federal return they said i needed the $70.00 version to get the forms I needed. I spent another hour trying to figure out how to ask if the $70 would be in addition to the $39.99 that I already signed up for. I could not figure out how to find this out, so I googled for H&R phone number. When I called and explained the trouble I was having the person told me to wait for a couple minutes on hold. I waited for over 20 minutes before deciding to hang up and be done with this nonsense forever.

H&R Tax Prep Courses--DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY

H&R Tax Prep Courses--what a junk company with the worst ever online courses. There is no support, and the content does not keep up with your progress. The app "Inkling" does not show any training courses that one signed up for. They know their product is faulty, so they designed their refund policy to prevent anyone from receiving a penny after signing up. Do NOT Waste Your money on this junk!

I filed a self employed 1099-nec I…

I filed a self employed 1099-nec I claimed two dependents that has been staying with me for more than a year that I financially care for I claim them as step children as I had been doing for years. .

230 bucks for self employed filing, state filing and forced to pay for a rep. Just for the rep to question me about my relationship to the dependents , question why birth parents weren't filing , where the parents are. Like it felt personal instead of her just looking to see if everything is right to be forward through. She telling me me that I can't claim them as step children, but I am able to claim them as such and such and I'm like you know what I'm just going to go through a different tax agency . I went to freetaxusa filed the same way I did with h&r block paid for a rep and boom federal refund approve and state within 20 mins of filing. No rep asking silly personal questions taking days to respond to my response. Last year when I filed with hnr I did a 1099-nec. Claimed the same dependents listed them as step children I had rep with 5+ year experience the only thing she asked me to do was provided proof that I recieve free medical I got my refund at the appropriate date because of PATH.

I was trying to file a late return and…

I was trying to file a late return and after my review of the preparation, the 1099‘s were in my wife’s name who has been retired for years as the business owner receiving the 1099, which I provided to them as I was filing a schedule C there were at least eight errors it was unfillable a total waste of $495. They want me to come in and pick up the return as opposed to sending it to me via email due to sensitive information. They can’t even encrypt an email with a passcode they will if I subscribe to my block one I have asked the rep to send me the link yesterday. She said she had a client. She would send it in 40 minutes then said she sent it which I never received. It was supposed to be a text message. I called her at 10 o’clock this morning asking where the link was so she could forward my corrected documents and she said she would be able to send it at 10:40 11 o’clock. I still have not received the amended return because I don’t have the link to HR block. I’ll search it and see if it’s available as she’s too busy to send it to me because she’s not getting paid to amend my return which Sherry Zeitland prepared and she was in a hurry to get out of the office and mangle it unfillable She did not mention my wife having a second car 2021 Nissan rogue platinum almost paid off and my business use of 4826 miles business and 8000 miles personal was checked NO my spouse doesn’t have another vehicle and my wife doesn’t have another vehicle she can use. And this woman has been filing taxes for years and charging $495. Don’t waste your time or money. Their service is pathetic. I’m still waiting on my block the link to have them securely send my return going on two hours promised 40 minutes ago, I would have yesterday she sent it not received???? Absolutely the worst customer service in the history of the world. I would give him a zero star if I could.

Next to impossible.

Next to impossible to complete my "free" online tax return with H&R Block. Overly confusing, as if they make it so difficult to force you to go in person or opt to pay more for support. Booooooo!

Absolutely horrible service

Absolutely horrible service. They were recommended to me by several expats for filing taxes online while living outside of the US and they have help my taxes hostage been completely unhelpful. Allow you to submit without doing checks then inform you after you've filed if they find errors and require you to pay for their advanced service to make corrections and will refuse to file your state taxes even if you paid them for it unless you use their service to amend the errors in your federal taxes (as in I informed them I would handle the amendments on my own without their service and they refused to move forward with my file). Which btw, the errors were cause by their website for filing being incredible unclear. I'm convinced this is intentional as it makes them more money. I'm absolutely livid I intend to find as many websites as I can to report this issues as I CANNOT believe how predatory this process has felt. I have never in the past 16 years of filing taxes had errors that required amendment this is 100% on their program.

Incompetence and unprofessional…

Incompetence and unprofessional prevail. A major mistake was made on our 2024 return (along with a couple of minor ones) which we are still trying to remedy with our state and federal. It has required a lot of work on our part with little to no follow-up from H&R Block. We paid $800 to have our taxes filed which will not be refunded even though we have the peace of mind guarantee. I have exhausted my calls to try and reach anyone at a corporate level. Done with H&R Block and do not recommend anyone use.

The military provides us this service…

The military provides us this service for free, it collects your ssn saying it can get your tax documents, then tells you it can't get them, so you have to download a scanner app on your phone to send photos of your w2, 1099, etc. then it tells you your refund, which is actually much lower. then it says your tax processing was rejected.

H&R Block its a fraud

Don't use their free service because you won't receive any assistance from them. I filed my taxes at the beginning of April and the IRS approved my return and I haven't received yet. I filled as the single person I'm and they are asking for my spouse documents and I'm not married. I have tried to contact them and it's been impossible because they don't respond either. I suppose you must paid for them to assist you, so why do they have the free option? I did my taxes last year and everything was perfect, but now I don't know what's the problem. I sent a message if I need to pay a fee but they haven't responded either. Apparently, they also want to force you to receive your money through them because I can't find any other explanation.

$400 Service for Tax Pros to fail to file State Taxes... twice in 3 years

I used this service to file my taxes while in the military in Tax Year 2022. I was told in 2023 that one of my 3 state tax filings had been submitted (as well as the other two), and I checked shortly thereafter to discover that they hadn't, with no reply from the tax pro. I wasn't contacted by that state until 2025, and was given 3 weeks to respond. I immediately contacted HR Block again on their own platform, so that they could tell me within a day that they submitted, and the state both received and accepted it. I called that state the next day, and the state taxation department said they had nothing on file for 2022, and an error saying they filed it incorrectly. I'm now within days of failing to meet the response deadline because two different "Tax Pros" failed to do their job. I could not recommend a company lower, especially for the ridiculously expensive cost of doing business with them.

If you want an easy, online software that doesn't treat you like this garbage, go use FreeTaxUSA - cheap, easy service, very user friendly, and good customer support.

Less Than Zero

Less Than Zero! This company coerced me to open a Spruce Account in order to get my return faster. When I did, their so-called security froze my account and stole over $400 from me with no way of recovering

Three weeks of emails to have no taxes filed in time.

Spent two weeks emailing them to find out how my tax return after submitting all my document. One week before the tax deadline I emailed again asking if we need to extend. My tax advisor said there was no need as I was a priority on the 13th of April I email again and ask what’s going on. I get a reply stating I was not a priority and they filed an extension. I had to spend the next day sitting with another company doing all my taxes from scratch.

Worst experience I have ever had from a so called professional firm dealing with taxes. I would not trust or let them touch any document and especially give them any money for this kind of if you can call it service.

I just finished a bizarre tax prep experience with HR BLock

I just finished a bizarre tax prep experience with H&R Block in Douglasville GA.

My intent is NOT to bash the people involved, so I will not use names. But, BUYER BEWARE.

This is my second attempt to work with Block. In the first time, the tax preparer made an egregious error. She botched the capital gains calculation, leading to a serious flaw in my return. Luckily, I paid for their “Peace of Mind” guarantee. Long story short, Block paid me $6,000 to correct the error. No apologies, just move on.

The entire staff was gathered around the front desk … chatting! My preparer among them. She know I was sitting there, but ignored me. Finally, I stood and walked to the group. Block is VERY casual about providing service, at lest in this office,

In this go-around, I needed an extension. The preparer took minutes online to find the form. Finally, she handed me the completed form, but it had a serious error. She told me that I would not have to pay taxes due until October. WRONG! The law states that all taxes due had to be paid with the extension. They wanted to charge me $99 for this! And it was in error!!! Before I knew the extension was in error.

I went to the front desk. She was unable to process the check to pay for the extension. She tried many times to get the reader to accept the check, but it did not work. Finally, she gave up and said I’d have to pay cash … or go somewhere else.

So I returned with cash. At this point, I was angry. The person at the front desk seemed irritated to have her office chatting interrupted. I should not have gotten angry, but it was now more than an hour, two trips to the Block office and STILL no end in sight. Rather than deal with their incompetence, They called the police. How bizarre!

I then went to an online service and got the extension in less than 5 minutes. And IRS accepted it!! I cost me $0!!! Shame on me for going to Block. With my accepted extension, I can now take my time to complete my taxes, but NOT with BLOCK.

I checked reviews, something I should have done before putting myself in the incompetent hands of Block. I was shocked to find that Block has MANY negative reviews. 1,118 total complaints in the last three years!

Oh … there appears to be NO Block address to lodge a complaint!! So I will post it on BBB, a public forum. Hopefully Block wall read this and replace staff with competent people,

It took me almost two hours to get to his point with Block, something I got done in less than 5 minutes with a FREE online service.

So, a word to the wise… save time, aggravation and your money; take your tax business elsewhere. I wish I had.

Waste of time and money

I live in the Philippines. I was recently married and will be filing a joint return. I specifically picked HRBlock Expat to file electronically and apply for a ITIN for my wife. After providing all required information, review and accepted the routine 1040 Tax document, and paying their $298 fee, THEN I receive a message stating I cannot File electronically and they cannot process the ITIN. NOTICE they waited until after they received their fee before telling me they could not provide the service requested. So I wasted $298 to just print out the 1040 they provided. (the same 1040 documents I complete on my own with the same results) Now I have to print their 1040, gather and print all my other documents for the ITIN application and phyiscally find a way to mail them from the Philippines myself. I have wasted both time and money because of their poor communication skill. I would have never had selected HRBlock Expat if I had known they could not provide the services I required. I rate them a zero. They do not even deserve a ONE STAR rating.

Poor reading comprehension, AI Slop

Some of the worst reading comprehension I've ever experienced.

I was a loyal H&R Block customer for years, but this year sent me through the roof. The agent responses are so nonsensical, it's like talking to ChatGPT. They don't even listen to basic information, and just send back unrelated paragraphs of information. Eventually they tried to sell me on their premium tax offering, which is $530. But it's a totally separate product, definitely some facade over Salesforce, and after entering information, I decided I didn't want to start from zero and type in everything again. An agent reached out encouraging me to complete the questionnaire. I provided some thoughtful product feedback on why I didn't want to upload and input all my tax information twice (and pay $530 for the priviledge). 24 hours later, I get a message "We hear you" and then they disregard what I said and press me to complete the questionnaire and schedule a call.

Writing that they "hear me" then disregarding everything I wrote is like salt in the wound. What a stupid, stupid way of running a business.

They charged my 23 year old son, over $600 for a simple tax prep!

My son is new to the workforce, first time he needed to file taxes. I sent him to H&R block due to his simple filing. It shows online that they will tell you up front what the cost will be. He called me when it was done and told me that they charged him over $600 for a simple 1099 filing and his few hundred dollars worth of crypto... Worst part is, although they state they will tell you up front so there are no surprises, they did his taxes and at the end is where they told this young person it was over $600 for 30 minutes worth of work... We called them to explain what happened and they just blew us off. Do NOT use this tax prep service... good grief. This was the H&R block location in Southaven, MS I would rate the a zero if I could.

Outrageous Fees

This year was the second time we used this particular HR agent. Nice guy; veteran, not an accountant. Our taxes are not that difficult and he used the standard deduction so there's not a whole lot of expenses to go through. In fact, it was so simple I am embarrassed because I could probably do them myself. His fee this year was $650 which was a big jump since last year (no change in the amount of work). We felt the fee was outrageous given the fact that my former accountant would only charge me $475. I let the office know we would not be coming back.
