Ready to get dyeing? Using a polyester dye is a great way to permanently color any synthetic wig. IDye Poly and Rit’s new line of synthetic dye called Dyemore are two great options for wig-coloring - click below the cut for a more in-depth Dyemore review, as well as instructions to jump start your journey into wig dyeing.
For folks who want a physical, true-color version of this chart, you can find it in Cosplay Culture Magazine’s August-September issue!
why did they ever even attempt to try and make another actor wear a white-blonde wig after orlando bloom in the lotr trilogy. don’t they understand that we peaked 20 years ago and everything else has looked like shit after that
it’s about the texture it’s about the stray hairs it’s about the color dimension
also though, weren’t the original trilogy wigs all real human hair? whereas all these recent house of dragons ones have been synthetic to save money which will always look fake compared to the real deal since synthetic fibers cannot get even close to as fine as real hair, esp the kind of thin silky weightlessness you get with legolas’s blond.
i’m not done with tink’s wig styling yet (gotta trim and style the bangs properly rather than just rolling the extra under and i wanna darken the roots), but this shows the progress so far! on the left is the wig as it came, and on the right is after i’ve modified it to fit my head properly, added lace portions, and moved the ponytail up.
just taking in the fit alone did wonders, but i pretty much always have to do that on ponytail wigs. if you’re getting gapping like in the first image on your wigs, do it! so worth it!
here’s what i’m experimenting with tonight! i’m adding thin lace wefts of hair to the sides of my newest tink wig (a jeannie from arda wigs) to blend it into my skin better. i may also add some to the back just to see if i can give the wig a more natural feel since ponytail wigs have a tendency to look a little like a hat sometimes.
Mercy wig step 5 complete! Now to let it dry over night before I razor the bangs and set the waves.
For those of you keeping track, the steps so far are:
1. cutting up the pony fall the wig came with and adding it all to the bangs.
2. resetting the ponytail to the top of Jenn’s head.
3. adding the pony fall we got on to the ponytail for volume.
4. cutting and teasing the pony tail, then recutting once i had it all teased. I added soft ahoge as per Jenn’s request. Then I teased the bangs for tonight’s round of styling.
5. I set the base of the bangs and let them down row by row to add any teasing I needed to make them as big as I wanted.
the results of my first time ventilating a wig! i think i want to do a bit more clean up around the edges, but i’m happy with this amount of widow’s peak for belle. the wig is a dany in spanish brown from arda wigs.
My second entry for the Iron Wig contest! We had to make a pouf updo a
la Marie Antoinette. These hairstyles reminded me of ice-creams and the
pink color of the provided wig really suited this idea. That’s why I
decided to make the wig into a huge strawberry ice-cream swirl with a
cherry on top. And because it’s an ice-cream, it’s melting on one side wink-emoticon
Hope you like it! You should really check out the other entries, they are really really amazing.
viki-sierra: Do you have any advice for making a detachable wig? For example, I want to do Disney's version of Rapunel from when her hair is long and braided together, but I want the log, thick braid portion to be detachable from the wig base so I can remove it when I need to store it/give my head a break. Maybe I should use multiple wefts and attach snaps to them and the wig base, and just sow them into it?
i’m not entirely sure about this, so maybe someone with actual parks costuming experience could help answer, but i suspect that in the parks, they actually attach rapunzel’s braid to the dress to keep the weight off of her head.
guess who got new wigs in today! this is actually two wigs, an arda jasmine and an arda silky ororo. i took this evening to resize the ponytail wig to fit my head properly and re-tie the tail. here’s a sort of rudimentary setup for my idea on how to do opal’s giant hair. right now, its just held up with a single claw clip and tissue paper, and that is definitely not stable enough so this wig might be getting the wire treatment like lisia’s did. i’m really excited about how this is looking! opal cosplay is go!
here’s some progress shot’s of the nightmare that has been lisia’s wig. don’t ever let me attempt a hairstyle like this again. it’s just the worst. also, bonus shot of megastone wip.
That new wig you got would be pretty fantastic…if only thebangs on it weren’t quite so long and curly! You don’t have to feel trapped
when you get a misfit wig. Use these basic tools and you can fix it up!
Wide-toothed Comb
This is gentlest on your wig. Other kinds risk splitting the
fibers on the wig and making it frizzy.
Foam Head
You can also use a wig stand, but these are more readily
available and pretty cheap.
Straight Pins
To keep the wig on the foam head.
Spray Bottle
Hair Cutting Shears
Alligator Clips
These are to keep different parts of the hair up and out of
the way while you’re styling.
Rollers
Hairspray
You can get away with using normal hairspray on synthetic
wigs, but it isn’t recommended and you’ll need the strongest hold available.
Hairspray for natural hair can break down the fibers in a wig over time, so
you’ll need to wash and re-style the wig frequently.
Wig Styling Gel
There is no wiggle room here. Normal gel does not work. You need product made
specifically for wigs.
Needle and Thread
For sewing-in wefts (small sections of wig hair)
Heat-resistant wigs only! Blowdryer
Heat-resistant wigs only! Straightener
Heat-resistant wigs only! Curler
Remember! When you’re using heating products on your wig,
they need to be on low settings. Heat-resistant ≠ heat-safe; you can still melt
your wig if the temperature is too high.
Try to keep all of these tools in one container by your wigs
so you always have easy access to them. It helps a lot, especially when you’re
in a rush.
This guide was made under the wing of Costume Discounters (www.costumediscounters.com). Please go check out their site!! They sell wigs, shoes, shirts, essentials…all sorts of goodies.
these are all great tools! i’d like to add on one more thing to this list, though…
a wig head holder! styling a wig without one is honestly a nightmare. it clamps right onto whatever table/counter you’re working at and you can adjust it really easily and lock the wig into whatever position you need it in. and it’s small enough to be easily portable, so you can bring it with you for last minute wig styling in con hotel rooms. you can find them fairly cheap different places. i got mine at Sally’s for $8.
We are proud to give you an announcement about a new product line we are launching: Arda Silky! This line of wigs will come in longer styles and have a softer, silkier texture so they will be more tangle resistant and easier to comb than our current wig line.
Do not worry: Our current line of wigs is not changing! We will still offer the Arda Wigs you know and love, but these will be a great addition that many customers have asked for!
Arda Silky is coming soon! We will have these new wigs available when our new site launches, so get hype!
I’m actually happy with how my wife’s pearl wig turned out! This was my first attempt at using a felt form to shape a wig. I missed taking a picture of the wefts on the cone but I just fabric glued them all around it, sprayed the hecky-decky out of it with got2b glued hair spray, sewed the hair-cone onto the wig and swept the extra hair back to cover the edges then sprayed everything in place. I can’t wait to make the pearl and spear!
