This circuit allows automatic control of mains power to an LED TV and set-top box via a USB connection. When the TV is turned off using the remote, its USB port stops providing power which causes the circuit's relay to switch off the mains power to both devices. This prevents the set-top box from being left on when the TV is off. The circuit also protects the devices from power surges when power is restored after an outage. It uses an optocoupler, transistor, relay, rectifier diodes and other components to sense the USB power and control the mains relay accordingly.

control or sleep timer in the TV, the
switched-mode power supply (SMPS)
of the TV continues to draw a small
amount of power from mains and the
STB does not get switched off. This
drawback can be overcome using
this circuit. Besides, it protects the
devices from harmful initial surges
when power comes back after a
power failure.
