For I come to you with burgers

recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.

Asking AI for information is like asking your drunk uncle for information. Usually wrong, definitely untrustworthy, and a little bit racist.

when we say "Google used to work" we mean "Google used to be a tool that would direct you to reliable websites, such as government information sites, at the top of its results". Google no longer does that, because Google makes money now, and the way it makes money is to show you ads, and you don't increase the stats for the search tool and look at more ads if you leave Google and go to reference sites or government portals or encyclopedias or research papers. Google would rather you stayed on Google, so it gives you AI and ads and makes it hard to find anything trustworthy.

So, now you have to be your own old-Google. You have to think: Who knows this information? and: Where will they publish it?

I mean this as a directive. You have to learn to do this. You have to think: Do I need a visa for this country? Where will that information be made available by an official source? and take yourself to the government website. You have to think: Is my dentist open on a Saturday? and find your dentist's website, and call them up if they haven't put their hours online. You have to think: How long was Teresa May prime minister? and go to Wikipedia or the parliamentary website and work it out from there.

Consulting reliable sources is a necessary skill, and I'm sorry if you're only learning it now, I know that's a burden, but you can't get the real answers any other way.

People say about Gen AI ''well its going to be basically in every game in the next few years so get used to it" like, no... do you have any idea how stubborn I am? I will never play another new game in MY LIFE if that is the case. There are plenty of old ones I missed. "Oh what about books and TV?" SAME. I do not care. I will stop consuming new media forever if GenAI is going to be in everything.

Yes, This is absolutely the hill I will die on (AND WE WILL ALL DIE ON IF COMPANIES DONT STOP PUSHING AI AND BUILDING FUCKING DATA CENTERS EVERYHERE FUCK)

Is this a new AI trend or am I just extra lucky to get a comment like this on AO3

what the actual fuck

It's AI! It's all over Reddit, but basically if they mention you being alone for Christmas, it's definitely AI. There have been HUNDREDS of comments that are just some variation of this over and over again; if you're ever wondering whether a fic comment is AI or not, check it out on Reddit, most of the posts are referencing these kinds of comments. It's fucked up, but the main theory is that recently, AO3 denied a bunch of tech bros the ability to train their AI systems on fanfic, so this is their revenge. They want you to stop writing. It's pathetic, just delete and block <3 I promise your fic is lovely!

Here's some proof of my above claims!

And that's FAR from all of them unfortunately. But your writing is good; it's a fucking AI hatebot who wants people off of the platform. Stay strong!! I'm so sorry that happened to you

Oh thank god

I hate to think that ao3 had such vile people (sure there are some rude or entitled comments) but NOT this

Thank you so so much for this clarification

Some of the language in those comments definitely would have sent me into a self-hate spiral in the past so it might help others to know that that the messages aren’t real.

Knowing that whoever is behind ai wants me to stop writing is so uplifting, genuinely.

They wouldn't do that if we weren't somehow threatening something out there.

Let's keep being threatening with our scandalous writing for passion and not for money people :D joke on them, spite is motivating 🫵

I do not want the ai overview. I want to read six wikipedia pages as god intended.

I finally donated to Wikipedia this year. I usually donate to something more "food for children", but it's different now. We can't lose it.

I should probably define what falls under the umbrella of generative AI here but I kinda don't feel like it, but like. using an image generator to make references. brainstorming by talking with chatgpt. generating images of characters as inspiration. all that kinda jazz counts. as of course does full-on using genAI to make your stuff.

remember that your vote is anonymous, so you don't have to out yourself on one side or the other when you share. I'm just curious what the spread is actually like when there's some anonymity. if you're wondering my own opinion it's in my original tags, but I'm attempting not to be judgemental in this accompanying text.

just remember that if y'all want to see how bad the genAI users get ratioed, you need to reblog it...

Rage. In my heart. All-consuming. FUCK AI.

For those who don't know, this piece is titled 'Unfinished Painting', by Keith Haring. He painted it about a year before his death of AIDs. I believe he actually finished other pieces between this one and his death. He left the majority of the canvas blank to represent his life and art career cut short due to HIV/AIDs. This was a deliberate choice and commentary about all that we lose (both personally and culturally) by ignoring the AIDs crisis at the time (1989). He was devastated he didn't have time to make more art. 'Finishing' Unfinished Painting is straight up spitting on Haring's grave and shows no understanding to the meaning behind the art. The AI interpretation doesn't even follow his extremely recognizable shape language and symbols. This is why people are angry about AI art. All commerce images and no meaning or humanity

dear Santa please make ai bubble blow up and every ai service go bankrupt facing legal charges for stealing other's work

Hi, Zen browser is a fork of Firefox that doesn't have any of the AI crap on it (and what came with the code is disabled by default).

The ONLY LLM stuff they've considered adding is ENTIRELY OPT-IN stuff for tidying your browser, and you wouldn't see a whiff of it if you didn't want to. They haven't done it yet and may end up not doing it at all, but imo it doesn't sound nearly as intrusive and gross as what Firefox's been doing without asking, even though I'd likely never use it.

I've been working on migrating my data and extensions over to Zen, and everything seems to work about the same. The only thing that's really taking getting used to is the tab list is on the side of the window vertically rather than at the top of the window horizontally.

Just boosting this. I tentatively started using Zen a year ago, and it took a bit of getting used to but it's SO powerful (especially if you use it with UBlock Origin and Privacy Badger). Chrome has rapidly become almost non-functional on many websites because of all the restrictions and gen AI bs it's added, so i've increasingly started using Zen as my main browser for almost everything. I really love it. It's beautiful, clean, minimalist, and perfect if you are someone who wants to customize/organize tabs and tab groups. Also every extension made for Firefox works on it.

I use it with startpage (which has built-in privacy features, draws from a stripped-down google API, and has an optional AI summary you can turn off) and mojeek (which searches blogs and websites and text-based resources, not video or social media platforms) as my primary search engines as well, and i really recommend it.

I have a suggestion

So, this is a good time to remind people about Waterfox.

* The asterisk acknowledges that "AI" has become a catch-all term. Machine learning tools like local translation engines (Bergamot) are valuable and transparent. Large language models, in their current black-box form, are neither. [sic]

Waterfox is based on Firefox. It's compatible with Firefox extensions. Waterfox is not incorporating LLMs into its code. If you like Firefox, but don't want AI fad bandwagoning, get Waterfox.

Delighted to be able to source this.

"Microsoft has cut its sales targets for its agentic AI software after struggling to find buyers interested in using it. In some cases, targets have been slashed by up to 50%, suggesting Microsoft overestimated the potential of its new AI tools. Indeed, compared with ChatGPT and Google's Gemini, Copilot is falling behind, raising concerns about Microsoft's substantial AI investment.

Microsoft was an early investor in many of the latest AI companies. It ended up with a serious stake in OpenAI and benefited from early access to its models, creating Bing Chat and Copilot when Google, Meta, and Anthropic were just getting started. But now its momentum has stalled, and like everyone else, it's not making much money from its AI products. That's because no one is buying them, and that is because very few people actually find them useful, The Information reports."

You should get an AO3 account

With the rise of AI and the well known epidemic of AI companies scraping Ao3 for training data most authors on Ao3 have locked down their fics to logged in users only. This is unfortunate for authors and readers. As an author I've noticed a steep drop in readership on fics restricted to logged in users and when recommending fics to my friends I've noticed that the folks without an account can't find the fics. The logged in users only toggle, not only keeps people without an account from reading a fic, but also from seeing its listing at all. More than 50% of fics I come across have this setting turned on. So, you should get an AO3 account. I know this seems daunting and unfair because it's an invite only system but, you can invite yourself through the homepage if you don't already have one, and in the past few years I've never heard of someone who requested an invitation through this method, not getting one. And for those of you who are hesitant because you don't write, that's okay. It's not weird at all to click on a commenter username and find that they have 0 works and 10,000 bookmarks. It might take a week for the invitation to actually show up, but I can almost guarantee you will get one, just keep an eye on your email. It's free to join and donations are optional. You'll have more to read if you have an account and maybe give your favorite author the chance to protect their work from AI without a loss of readership and feedback.
