I remember hearing of a man who failed Chicken Math and had 10 chickens, average of 8 eggs a day. He started throwing them at the deer to spook them out of his garden. Now the deer, who would lick the eggs off each other, just stand there. Waiting. Waiting to be egged.

i wish that the "bad people don't worry about whether they're bad people" myth was less pervasive in posts about moral OCD. you can tell it's false if you look at the world for more than a half-second, and i think the degree to which it is obviously false makes more people conclude that their OCD is correct. there are lots of self-hating terrible people out there. the crucial part is that their self-hatred is not making them into better people

friends, if I can give you one piece of advice for those of you who are new to work, or are about to enter the workforce, especially if you have any sort of office job:
Do not work on your days off.
"But--"
DO NOT WORK ON YOUR DAYS OFF.
Do not work on your breaks
Do not “answer a few emails” on your vacation
Do not work off the clock
Doing this doesn’t reward you with more money or whatever. It rewards you with more work.
Do not donate unpaid labor to your employer.
"But..."
If your customers will suffer because you do not donate unpaid labor, document it, mitigate it while being paid, but do NOT feel guilty. You did not decide that your department should be understaffed.
Too many workplaces have a toxic, abusive culture where they hire passionate, helpful, compassionate people and then guilt trip them into working for free because otherwise innocent people will suffer.
Don't comply with guilt trips. Hold the oxygen mask to your own face before assisting others.
