they/them, he/they, 26 • THIS is the empire of dirt Nine Inch Nails was talking about. • Other blogs: @Marlinsart, @MarlinsWritingArchive n a bunch of others because it's impossible to categorise Tumblr otherwise

Everyone who hasn't read the Star Trek: Year Five comic is missing out on some wonderfully angsty pre-TMP divorce Spirk moments, so even if you don't plan on reading it at least take a look at some parts of this scene because it had me screaming inside.

That one last panel... Obviously Kirk was going through it but Spock had me so fooled until the last part omfg

also saw some post earlier today about how gen z isn't doing cults anymore. That's simply not true. It's simply not true. There are actually more cults than ever and they are on the discord app. You don't understand. They are doing struggle sessions in fandom discourds

the reason that OP claimed there were no gen z cults was because there's no cheap real estate to have a compound on anymore which is such an annoying ass bsky.app millennial take like I can hear you smirking behind your latte. No. "second location" is an outdated model. people figured out how to leave all the time back then. Now your phone is the second location and leaving your Phone Cult is so much harder

These discord communities 100% check all the boxes of cult indication. Preying on vulnerable people and doing shit like stalking and threatening them with blackmail

If anyone doesn't know what this is referring too, it's generally specifically the kind of fandom space which centers itself highly around current discourse, adherence to the group, and requires the people involved to be 'in the know' about who is an ally to this space be protected, and who is a person to be shunned and excluded. They are generally these kind of insular fandom spaces which demean other fans as malicious and organize targeted harassment. These exist in a lot of places. A lot are superficially left-leaning, presenting themselves as a space inclusive to the LGBT community but actually preying on vulnerable youth and socially isolating them through exclusionary practices. These things seem to be, at a glance, an inclusive and forward space, but are utilizing ideas like 'Those who espouse hate should be deplatformed' and warping them to mean like 'This person disagreed with our witch hunt, so they are hateful towards us and need to be excised." Real ideas of persecution are thus weaponized to support a cult mentality. But not all are so left-wing, and I don't meant to imply this is some unique left-wing thing - there are similar groups focusing on what media is 'woke' or fandom discords which are more rooted around a creator (ie, Floraverse.) It's just that this kind of fandom-left-politics thing is a really easy way to attract vulnerable and displaced people to your cult, and an easy way to disguise some bad intents behind a facade of inclusivity (which is how cults always tended to operate) Talking the talk in that regard does not mean you walk the walk, if that makes sense I've never been in one of these places, but I have been at the fringes of them. I've seen people who got very mad at me for something I retweeted. But, it was not the content they were mad at, it was just the person who posted it. And it was not them who got mad, they were talking to me about this because someone they knew saw me retweet it. And they framed it very much as 'You should be careful about your reputation' and not about anything actually about ethics. I've also had a friend describe to me a particular Discord server they found themselves in, and how they had developed 'rituals.' If someone had a grievance, there was a special channel they would go to, and everyone was encouraged to watch as any issues were aired publicly, and others could chime in about who is in the wrong (which of course sided with a group.) This fandom space had developed it's own weird little cult hazing ritual. It's all... Very strange and uncomfortable.

I agree it's not an exclusively left thing, but more commonly a left thing. because left-ish cultural norms give people with BPD superpowers the way Superman is empowered by Earth's yellow sun. "fandom as activism" creates cults without even trying, they don't even need leaders.

however I just want to point out how completely bizarre and incongruous point #3 on the list of dangerous cult traits is. like 5 and 6 are basically the same thing but at least that same thing is cult-life behavior. lack of adequate financial disclosure does not make something a cult and also cannot possibly apply to the groups we're talking about

I assume that's more about traditional cults that often grift their members for money (like Scientology) and don't disclose what they spend it on (lining the leaders' pockets).

Which yeah, doesn't really apply here. Unless you count how susceptible these kinds of people are to, like, gofundme scams and the kind of pushback you get when you question them.

Number three can apply to things other than money, though, namely goodwill. Are discord moderators expected to be online putting out fires 24/7, and held responsible when things go wrong? Are people expected to dedicate a lot of time to a project? Time= money, and clout equals money, too. Are "famous"/popular users expected to reblog things or lend their voice to projects?

Financial abuse/huge spending is also rife in fandom spaces. I'm not asserting these are cults, but let's not forget how many people donate to campaigns to renew their favourite show when they get cancelled. There is a lot of money floating around in fandom spaces, especially because people are already primed to care deeply about a piece of media.

“Lack of meaningful financial disclosure regarding budget” is often shorthand for: your time is valuable. Is it being taken advantage of?

someone found a dollar this morning

Nobody said it was some sort of good luck money bird, but I'm not taking any chances.

*I* didn't say it, but

it may have been mentioned

I am fascinated by this Tumblr habit. If I give my cat a $20 and take a picture and post it here my cat will be canonized as possessing vast power to impact the massive systems that control total strangers financial situations all over the globe. His political and spiritual power would have seemingly no assumed limits.

Meanwhile he would be pooping in a box and sprinting around the house as usual, oblivious to his sudden status.

What I'm hearing is that you should give your cat a $20 because it would be funny as shit.

The nature of humanity is such that we keep inventing long forgotten scams again. With a side of idolatry.
