The Family Tree
Little ones!" their father chortled, "Let me tell you how I met your mother." The hatchlings groaned, absolutely uninterested in the embarrassing displays of their parents. "Yes yes, let me tell you about the tree where I was born. In a forest not unlike this one, with trees almost quite as tall, my very own parents took a nest beside the nest of their own best friends. Why yes! Adults do have best friends! These friends had journeyed many times together, and had adventures and also ate many good meals at the same table, before going their separate ways. This is how friends are, as you will surely learn. These nests were built deep in the safety between the oldest roots of a very large tree. So large it was, that 3 separate clans of honeybee had made their homes in its branches. Your mother's parents raised several clutches there, before I was laid in my cozy shell, snuggled in the roots. Naturally when I and my siblings hatched, the neighbours were curious! All the young faces clustered around to see us (we were very cute) but the most beautiful of all was your mother's. I knew right then, in my fresh little hatchling heart, that one day I would win hers!" At this point their mother smiled and nodded indulgently. "Yes dear, so it was. The most darling child and the most persistent young drake I ever met." Their father gazed proudly at their little faces. "Ah yes, I see how moved you are. Dear children, pray you be so lucky as we!" The hatchlings fled, their faces fixed in expressions of tortured strain. So embarrassing to have parents with no shame! |

After seeing the local archaeologist come home yesterday with too many crates of rocks and a mad twinkle in her eyes, Sweetbark and Honeyheart have decided it might be better for all involved if they instead put their latest brood of treelings to work.
The triplets take turns wiggling their crests at the Fae in charge, and then skitter off to follow her example. Under their mother's supervision, they spend the day burning off boundless hatchling energy cutting vines loose for their father to drag away, and then chasing leaves around as their mother sweeps them up. Eventually they collapse in a sleepy heap on the piles of gathered moss, and their parents continue without them, a well practised team.

The triplets are back, and covered in mud and muck head to toe. "Look mama! More boots!" they squeal, and drag the remnants of an old wader onto shore, tipping it out to see what escapes with the mud and water.
There must have been quite the colony of cobblers here at one time, or some very unfortunate fisherfolk. The pile of soggy dissolving boots their parents have amassed is truly impressive. They've also managed to rake out a large quantity of overgrown plant matter that was choking the shallows, and already the water is starting to settle and clear, running more freely. The kelp and weed is hauled off to be composted while the children fling gobbets of goop at one another.
Finally they are chased into the newly deepened pond to be scrubbed and rinsed, and then sent to sit in a tree to dry, and hopefully take a nap.

Sweetbark and Honeyheart are back, and today they're making everyone uncomfortable as they go around slyly placing fertility statues in the corners of every newly restored home. Giggling and winking at each other, to the horror of onlookers this pair of childhood sweethearts knows no shame, and is determined to spread the love.
They've also brought a crate of nicely sized hematite stones and set up a little carving station for the creation of less saucy figurines as well.

While Honeyheart is not truly a kingly ruler of much more than his mate's heart, he's got a crown and the wisdom that comes from having so very very many children.
"What is important in a ruler can depend upon one's perspective.
To become a ruler, if not simply born one, most definitely requires Charisma above all else. Even a born ruler may find a lack of Charisma leading to the loss of a throne. And while Compassion and Integrity are certainly to be desired, and surely the things those ruled would judge most necessary, it is Wisdom that will truly hold a throne.
Wisdom decides when compassion can be afforded, when integrity must be sacrificed, and where charisma can most usefully be applied. Wisdom above all else, determines a ruler! A cruel ruler applies Wisdom to their own ends, a good one expends Wisdom to the support and security of the people. It is up to the people's Wisdom to see which is which."
