| When it comes to strategy, Kez tends to wing it – Switching Disciples on the fly, Kestrel swaps between his Kazurai Katana which creates deep and lasting cuts that bleed the enemy greatly, and his swift Shodo Sai, to deliver swift, crippling strikes. With his Kazurai Katana, he dashes forward, leaving behind a remnant that delivers Echoing Slashes. A Grappling Hook on his side, Kez can jump any foe with ease, hacking them to pieces with his notorious Raptor Dance. With the Shodo Sai, Kez Falcon Rushes in onto his foes, using the speed of the Sai to perform echoing attacks. Fleeing enemies are caught by a Talon Toss; a sai blade thrown with deadly precision. During sticky situations, Kez parries any attacks pointed at him, and may pulls over his Raven's Veil, receding into the shadows. [edit]- Kez was revealed during The International 2024.[1]
- Kez's full name is Kestrel, with "Kez" being a nickname.[2]
- A Katana is a Japanese sword characterized by a curved, single-edged blade with usually a long guard that allows it to be comfortably used with two hands as well. As a wielder, Kez uses several familiar techniques found in Japanese swordsmanship.
- In his idle animations, Kez enters a kendo stance similar to waki-gamae in which he holds his sword around waist level with the pommel pointing forward and the blade pointed backwards.
- In his aggressive idle animations (e.g. when an enemy is nearby), Kez's stance with his katana bears the most resemblance to hassō-gamae in which he holds the sword upright and around head level.
- Kez's ability Raptor Dance has him perform a flurry of slashes after unsheathing his sword, similar to the art of iaido in which practitioners can quickly draw their sword from its sheath to attack.
- A Sai is a short, pointy melee weapon, usually used in pairs, one for each hand. It is historically used in southern Chinese martial arts.
- The response ▶️ "Slasher's way!" is a reference to a player Slahser, who is known within the community for his experimental hero builds, known as "slahser's way".[3]
- The spawn response ▶️ “ABS: Always be stabbin!” is a reference to the 1992 film Glengarry Glen Ross in which the character Blake, a top salesman played by Alec Baldwin, says “A, B, C. A - Always, B - Be, C - Closing. Always be closing. Always be closing!” during a speech where he motivates four salespeople in his firm to close enough deals within 1 week in a sales contest lest they get fired.
- The move response ▶️ "Lookin' for a worm sign." is a reference to the Dune franchise. In the franchise, a "wormsign" is a strong indicator for the presence of a Sandworm.
