Surprises enemies with invisible landmines and explosive attacks.
Techies Demolitions was not so much a business as it was an excuse for Squee, Spleen, and Spoon to practice their favorite hobby: Blowin' stuff up. For them, battle is a matter of mischief. Giggling while they place misleading Minefield Signs, lob Sticky Bombs around the battlefield, hiding their renowned Proximity Mines they buried beneath Toterin that collapsed the town into a heap of rubble, testing their latest invention — a disarming zaps firing Reactive Tazer, and much more. Techies Demolitions handles dissatisfied customers with unexpected cheer. Their last words 'Blast Off!' can be heard just before an epic and reckless explosion delivers enough to leave most enemies dead. Or at least enraged. Often both.

In the storied saga of Dredger's Bight, no business has ever been more reviled than Techies Demolitions. Then again, Dredger's Bight no longer exists. Nor does Toterin. Or even Trapper Town. In fact, if one were to track the history of Techies Demolitions they might notice that shortly after Techies appear, towns tend to disappear.

Like every inevitable disaster surrounding Techies, the obliteration of Dredger's Bight began with an invention. Tasked with designing a safer way of detonating explosives in the mines beneath the city, pyrotechnic prodigies Squee, Spleen, and Spoon developed their most outlandish creation yet: a button which, when pressed, would trigger a distant device to spark a fuse.

Overeager to test their invention, the trio stuffed barrel after barrel with flamesalt explosives, piling every corner of their tiny workshop high with the newly developed remote bombs. From this stockpile they plucked a single payload, burying it in a far away field. As they cowered in a ditch, Spleen pressed the detonator button. Yet after a moment, nothing happened. Confused, he stood up, pressing his button again and again until, finally, an explosion tore a hole in the field. Elated, Squee and Spleen turned toward home just as a massive wave of sound and force arrived to knock them over.

Bewildered, their ears ringing from the unexpected blast, they gathered in the dingy miasma to see a smoking ruin where their workshop once stood. Chunks of wood and stone continued to fall as the yawning crater before them slowly deepened into an expanding pit. The whole of Dredger's Bight shuddered, and then gradually started to slide into the mines below as its panicked residents fled.

Sitting at the edge of their sinking home they grinned and giggled, as giddy at the possibilities as they were oblivious to the scorn of their former neighbors. They wondered only one thing: how could they trigger an even bigger blast?

Trivia

[edit]
  • Before its release, Techies was showcased at the All-Star match of The International 2014, and played by Artour "Arteezy" Babaev (VOD)
    • He originally picked Sniper, but right before the picking phase ended, his pick got replaced by Techies
    • As this happened, fireworks were launched in the arena, Techies' portrait was shown on all screens, and this ▶️ sound effect played.
  • Techies makes many references to other titles from Valve.
    • Techies makes several references to Team Fortress 2, mainly to the Demoman.
    • Techies also makes several references to Counter-Strike with his voice lines.
      • His defeat response ▶️ "Counter-Techies Win" references the victory announcement in Counter-Strike: "Counter-Terrorists win".
      • His Sticky Bomb cast response ▶️ "Bomb has been planted" quotes the bomb planted annoucement.
      • His unused fail response ▶️ "Bomb has been defused. Darn!" quotes the bomb defused announcement.
    • His last-hit response ▶️ "Continue testing." is a catch phrase from GLaDOS from Portal, specifically from the Co-Op trailer of Portal 2.
    • Techies rare line ▶️ "Who said we couldn't count to three, huh?" is references a long-running gag that Valve cannot release a game with the number 3 in its title, as they yet have to release a third installment for any of their titles.
  • Techies' attack response ▶️ "See! Fore!" is a pun on the plastic explosive C-4.
  • Techies' purchase response ▶️ "Claymore! But not that kind of claymore." is a reference to the M18 Claymore mine.
  • Techies' kill response ▶️ "Loud noises!" is a to a scene of Brick Tamland from the movie Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.
  • The individual Techies' names are taken from several pop culture references.
    • The name Squee is taken from Squee, the Immortal, an immortal goblin from Magic the Gathering.
    • The name Spleen is likely taken from the flavor text of Goblin Soothsayer, which reads:
"I see a great victory and rivers of blood. And . . . hmm, looks like a spleen.".
    • Spoon's name has a bit of a history within DotA:
      • Originally, Techies was just named Squee and Spleen, as everyone thought the model included two goblins.
      • However, some time later, people realised there is a third goblin hiding in the barrel; Only its feet are visible.
      • Once this was found out, the name was updated to Squee Spleen and Spoon.
      • The name Spoon is a reference to a scene from The Matrix film, where a boy bends a spoon with his mind and then says to Neo: "Do not try and bend the spoon. That's impossible. Instead, only try to realise the truth." ... "There is no spoon."[1]
      • The name was chosen because the third goblin effectively did not exist until the third goblin was discovered. There was no Spoon.
      • This reference is expanded on in Dota 2. Squee and Spleen think Spoon is dead, so they think there is no Spoon anymore.
▶️Squee: "Spoon was in the workshop when it exploded, right?"
        Splee: "I think so."
        Spoon: "No I wasn't."
Squee: "You know, sometimes I can still hear his voice."
  • In the past, there was some confusion as to who was Spleen and who was Squee. According to the game files and their lip syncing:
    • Squee is riding the cart and wielding the rocket launcher, while smoking a cigar. He has the lower voice.
    • Spleen is pushing the cart and carrying Sploon on his back. He has the high voice.
    • The mix-up was commonly caused by their voices, as the smaller of the two has the lower voice, and the bigger the higher voice.
    • Even the developers were affected by the mix-up several times, mislabling their cosmetic items.
  • Spoon's design — fingers and long nose sticking out the barrel — may be a reference to Kilroy, a meme that was popular in World War II.
  • There is a hidden "trollface" in Remote Mines' ability icon.
  • Sticky Bomb's slow debuff does not have its own particle system and uses the particle effects of Thunder Clap's debuff instead.
