i've never really been a fan of spinner. but seeing it on sandsurges for the first time... its honestly the only time ive ever liked the gene! i really like it, i love how theres so much room for the accent colour on the fins. i dont think it looks rushed or hastily drawn at all - not to be contrarian, i promise! but as an artist, i can very easily see the thought put into drawing the pattern. it looks a lot more natural than spinner on other breeds, in my opinion.
Skimmed through the thread so far and counted
18 dislikes and 29 likes of sandsurge spinner (it was a quick count and I skipped comments that seemed ambivalent or didn't summarize their "I like it / I don't" in a clear statement so it might be a bit off). While it's certainly a matter of taste it looks like in general people appreciate it more than not (at least out of the people who found this thread and responded).
Personally I really like that staff are trying something new and that sandsurge spinner is still recognizable as spinner but not a straight up copy/paste of other breeds. It's cool when genes are a little different, especially on ancients, whose unique shapes lend themselves well to more creative license.
This is a liiiittle off topic but I think it it still fits with a broader discussion of consistency (and I don't visit the forums often so if I don't say it here I probably won't say it anywhere asdfkhd): one of my friends pointed out that glitch on Cirrus is on exactly the same body parts as Everlux (front shoulders, tail, and wing edges) and now I can't unsee it.
On everlux, because of the pose, the tertiary color is spread throughout the image all over the dragon and it looks balanced.
On cirrus, male especially, the color is concentrated in one line along the center and it seems bunched and crowded together.
Not that it looks
bad, but I wonder if it would be better with maybe some buttfluff or hind leg glitch, or some in front of the shoulder swirls to spread the color out more and have the same
visual effect of the glitch gene instead of sticking rigidly to where it was positioned on the OG dragon's body.
TL;DR: I think it's good when staff tries new things with different breeds!

it's interesting, but it's really not what spinner looks like

NOOOOOOO SPINNER ON SANDSURGES IS EPIC. I swear if this gets changed, I'm going to have a conniption. Please please please let this be an artistic choice.

I don't mind the placement of the patterns, but the patterns themselves look really blobby and rough. There's always been some breaks in the lines of spinner, but here it feels like there's more break than line!

Ooo, I like it! I think they should give this version to more breeds in the future

Personally I'm not a fan. I feel like the accent stands out too much and the pattern splits up the fin in a strange way, more than having it just on the edge would do. Like, it looks alright on the H pose and on the tail fins of all poses because it's more balanced. I can imagine this kind of shape looking better if the pattern was thinner and had multiple strips instead of just one (so add one to the tips and one closer to the body), but then it wouldn't really be Spinner lol
I don't think they should change it though. If anything, just make the pattern on the head fins rounder to match. It looks intentional and I can respect them going for something different if they felt it worked best for the breed. It's fun when genes display in somewhat unique ways!

^ Also I agree with Websteak's post. For example, I'm glad that that Gliders on Everlux looks like Everlux wings instead of being the same shape as Banescale Gliders. As opposed to Fans, which uses Banescales' existing spines but then... doesn't do that for Aethers, and imo looks much worse for it.

I think it looks really nice honestly, it's not really consistent but it does feel more aesthetically pleasing to me than on other breeds

I think it’s cute :3 I don’t mind ancient genes looking a little different, as long as they’re not boring or muddy. At least in regards to the wing pattern shape, this is a well-executed, obviously intentional design. And honestly I don’t think a consistent version would be different enough to be worth it, and I doubt it would be better. Maybe there are minor things like the female head frill patterns might be a little thicker than the other two, I wouldn’t mind if that was adjusted, but otherwise I would be happy if it stayed as is.

Lots of people want gene variation and then as soon as they get it there's a post complaining about it. Which I guess is to be expected. I do think that ancients having gene variation is good!
